1. From the center hole, count 3 threads to the right to work the center eyelet using 1 strand Silk Lamé (rust). 2. With the same Silk Lamé, work the vertical and the horizontal arms (rust) of the eight 6 x 6 triple crosses. Complete the triple crosses using 1 strand of Vineyard silk (blue).

3. Use 3 or 4 ply Splendor silk to stitch a diagonal row of inverted mosaics (green), beginning and ending with a 2 x 2 upright cross at each quadrant line. From this point on, pay attention to the quadrant lines: all pattern rows, with the exception of the rectangular eyelet at the midpoints, will change slant in each quadrant.

4. Use 1 strand of Vineyard silk (blue) and 1 strand of Silk Lamé (rust) to work the interrupted scotch stitches. Step 1: With the Vineyard silk (blue), place the “over one, over three, over one” stitches as shown. Step 2: With the Silk Lamé (rust), come up at the midpoint on the bottom/south, carry the thread along the diagonal and sink the Silk Lamé at the midpoint on the right/east as shown. Step 3: With the Vineyard silk (blue), place the “over two” stitches to complete the interrupted scotches.

5. Use 1 ply Watercolours (white) to stitch the inner row and the outer row of Byzantine. Pay close attention to the direction of the stitches: 3 x 3 squares are created. To fill the squares: Step 1: With 1 strand of Silk Lamé (rust), place a long diagonal stitch as seen on the Master Chart. Step 2: With 1 strand Vineyard silk (blue), stitch 3 x 3 double crosses to hold the Silk Lamé in place.

6. Use 3 or 4 ply Splendor silk (green) to stitch a 6 x 8 rectangular eyelet at the bottom/south and the right/east.

7. Use 1 strand Silk Lamé (rust) to lay one long diagonal stitch from the rectangular eyelet at the bottom/south to the rectangular eyelet at the right/east. Refer to the Master Chart for placement. Couch down the Silk Lamé using 1 strand of Vineyard silk (blue) in a fan eyelet. Stitch a second row of fan eyelets as shown on the Master Chart. These fan eyelets do not have Silk Lamé underneath.

8. Use 1 ply Watercolours (white), work an outer row of Byzantine.

9. Use 3 or 4 ply Splendor silk (green) to square off the design with alternating scotch stitches. Pay attention to the compensating stitches necessary for the outer edges: they are alternating cashmeres.

Enjoy!Sue

Portland Revisited 2A special thank you to Pam Douda and Kim Probst for restitching the original version of Portland using updated threads. Thank you to the Illini Needlers Chapter of the ANG for using this as their philanthropic fundraiser to benefit their local chapter of Autism Speaks.

You are stitching the third version of this design. Changes in colors, threads, and some stitches were made to the the Illini version to create this update. Page 3 shows the threads used in the model. Use your stash!

The Master Chart on Page 3 shows the center, the lower right-hand quadrant (designated by the dotted lines) and partial adjoining quadrants. The instructions are written for this quadrant. If needed, rotate the canvas or chart to complete the remaining three quadrants.
