It now is one of the leading golf destinations in the World, with award winning courses and resorts located in the Algarve and Lisbon. Each year brings more awards and accolades to Portugal, which now has more than eighty golf courses, with championship designs by renowned architects such as Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros and Robert Trent Jones, who used the natural Portuguese terrain and coastline to create their works of art.

Over the following 96-pages, we visit nine different golf destinations across the islands of Madeira and the Azores; and the popular mainland destinations of the Algarve, Lisbon and Porto e Norte.

Fuelled by a desire to find quality and taste, Grace Campbell Wines are Irelands leading importer of Portuguese Wines into Ireland. Destination Golf Portugal is delighted to partner up with this passionate company to educate our readers about the superior Portuguese wines that are readily available in the Irish market.

With an assortment of festivals in each destination throughout the year, each holiday to Portugal is sure to provide something unique. Our festival pages will provide information about some sporting and cultural events, which would be worth considering when planning your next visit to the sun.

WINES FROM PORTuGAL

Despite its Atlantic location at the extreme southwest of Europe, Portugal is part of the Mediterranean world by geography, climate, history cultural traditions and genetic heritage. A world where the cultivation of the vine and the wine production have always played a structuring role in the activities of the peoples who inhabited it.

Page 9: Portugal 2012

For the many Irish people (850,000 annually) who visit the shores of Portugal, it is the 19th hole and the restaurants which are the source of our discovery of drinking Portuguese wines. The diversity and difference of Portuguese wines can be put down to their indigenous grape varieties (over 250 types) and when married with international grape varieties, lots of very well crafted wines are produced.

It is no coincidence that in the Oscar-type awards in the wine industry, Portuguese wines are increasingly attaining gold, silver and bronze medals for their outstanding quality.

Grace Campbell Wines are responsible for promoting and importing Portuguese wines to Ireland, which began after many years of golf trips to Portugal, ie the Algarve and Lisbon, where the golf courses are outstanding and their experimentation in their different regions and types of wines occurred. In May 2003, the journey began, where they started with about 15 wines and 3 ports and today that figure is 60 wines and 12 ports from the Minho, Douro, Dao, Beira interior. Alentejo, Lisboa, Tejo and Bairrada wine growing regions of Portugal. During this time they have concentrated on quality wines which will be familiar to the Irish people on their return from their wine drinking experience in Portugal.

Starting in the top corner of Portugal is the Minho region where the now famous Vinho Verde wines are produced. Vinho Verde can be one of the world’s most delightful aperitifs, crisp, aromatic, with the lightest imaginable prickle of fizz and sometimes a hint of sweetness. Main grape varieties include Alvarinho, Loureiro, Tradadura, Arinto and Azal.

In the Grace Campbell collection, there are three wines from this region: Quinta Da Lixa Vinho Verde, Quinta Da Lixa Vinho Verde Rosé and Quinta Da Lixa Alvarinho, all well priced, low in alcohol and well received in the market place.

Heading down the country you arrive at Portugal’s most famous wine region, the Douro, the home of port and world class table wines. The first demarcated wine region in the world originated here in 1756 and ever since the region’s fame has rested upon its fortified wine. Nowadays also the modern Douro red wines are regularly ranked among Portugal’ s finest and world acclaimed wine awards. The Douro has world heritage site status bestowed upon it, and any person who has visited the Douro region has been overwhelmed by its beauty, the river, the dramatic mountain landscape and the friendliness of the people. Main grape varieties from the region include Touriga National, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cáo and Sousáo.

Arriving in the middle of Portugal, you now arrive to the Lisbon region which hosts the capital. A strong Atlantic breeze blows across the vineyard slopes, whereby quality red and white wines are well crafted , a blend of indigenous and international grape varieties are married together to make top quality wines and very affordable as well.

Moving sideways you enter four very important wine growing regions, Dao, Tejo, Beira and Bairrada. Dao wines are world famous

wine feature

for their elegance and durability and the Tejo and Beira for their modern fruit styles and Bairrada, the home of good quality sparkling wines.

Moving south, you arrive at the Alentejo region where nowadays great wines are being produced, the wines are easy drinking fruit driven and both the reds and whites are mostly recognised by the Irish people on holidays, and they account for 60% of all domestic sales in Portugal and the same representation in restaurants and wine shops.

With the Grace Campbell portfolio, the wines of Malhadinha Nova, Herdade Dos Grous, Cortes Da Cima, Monte da Ravasqueira, Altas Quintas and Farizoa are hitting the spot with the Irish people as they are now readably available in Ireland’s independent off licences, golf clubs and many of our top quality restaurants, including three of our Michelin Star establishments.

If you have not experienced drinking Portuguese wines to date, now is the time to give it a go starting with the Alentejo wines. Whereby we guarantee you will not be disappointed, the opposite in effect, through satisfaction and the sense of discovery.

Palheiro GolfSituated close to the famous gardens of Quinta do Palheiro, which date back to the beginning of the nineteenth century that are famous for their wide range of exotic flora, the Palheiro course offers fabulous views over Funchal bay, the sea and the Ilhas Desertas in the distance.

The par-72 course was designed by the architect Cabell Robinson, a former assistant of Robert Trent Jones, who had already done work in Portugal and took care to make the most of the hills, mountain peaks and deep valleys that are a typical feature of the Madeira landscape, in order to provide golfers with an exciting and competitive round.

The course got a facelift in 2003. Two holes were completely replaced and a small 6-hole academy course was added.

The Palheiro course offers

Club de Golf Santo da Serra Porto Santo

Porto SantoSpreading out over the idyllic island of Porto Santo, the layout of the course was planned in such a way as to blend harmoniously with the landscape and to respect the island’s ecosystems, taking advantage of the native plant species and the various lakes already existing there. It is an extensive and demanding course set in a spectacular landscape, one that is capable of attracting not only professional players, but also less experienced golfers, being divided into two different areas. The southern course comes close to the traditional style of the best American courses, with a number of lakes and the island’s long beach as a backdrop. The northern course is a made more difficult by high cliffs and combines the best features of British links courses with spectacular scenery, providing an unrepeatable challenge for golfers.

Club de Golf Santo Da SerraHost venue to the Madeira Open European Tour event each year since 1993, this picturesque course is a Robert Trent Jones that opened in 1991. It offers fantastic panoramic views over the ocean and is one of the most breathtaking mountain courses in Europe. Because it is built on very irregular terrain at an altitude of 670 metres above sea level and in an area of profuse vegetation, the fulfilling of this project required a huge effort in every sense. Nonetheless, Trent Jones succeeded in giving the 27 holes, (the third nine-hole loop was opened in October 1998) a logical, interdependent design. One of the most spectacular holes is hole number 4 (on the Machico course), a par 3, where the drive to the green is played over a ravine filled with very dense vegetation. The whole course provides players with most extraordinary views.

The Azores Islands are an archipelago of nine Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The name Azores was derived from a Portuguese word “azures”, which translated is the plural of the word blue. The islands are peaceful, quiet and scenic. The island is full of blue and green lagoons that are

shadowed by high peaked mountains. Festivals are popular and tourism attractions are plentiful. But a holiday to the Azores is all about unwinding, grasping a break from a hectic daily life and enjoying nature at its best.

Furnas Furnas

Clube de Golfe da Ilha TerceiraBuilt in 1954, this Championship course is situated close to Angra do Heroísmo, the capital of Terceira island. Tall pine-trees, brightly-coloured flowers (particularly azaleas and hydrangeas), several natural lakes and a superb level of upkeep, all lend this course much of the natural beauty of the Azores. Several tees for each hole also give the course a championship flavour and make playing here a truly unforgettable experience. The club is run by a tripartite group, consisting of representatives from the Regional Government of the Azores, the Azores Air Zone and the American Command.

FurnasBuilt in 1936, Furnas golf course was updated in 1986 with an additional 9-holes making it up to a 6,232metre 18-hole course. The course has full matured and now it would be impossible to distinguish between the new and old nines. It is located around 40 minutes from Ponta Delgada, in pleasant surroundings with stunning beauty. The greens are small and undulating, while the tree lined fairways are very tight. It hosts an international golfing event each year called the Sata Azores Open - in conjunction with the Batalha course.

BatalhaDesigned by Cameron Powell this 6,435metre course is set on a historic battle site, from which the course name derives. This is the newest golf course in the Azores, a welcome addition to a golf product that is growing in the Azores. It is located on a plain close to Pinta Delgada, and built on volcanic rock. The fact that the course was built on volcanic rock created difficulties in its design and has resulted in a spectacular contrast between the green playing areas and the dry woods standing on rocky soil to the side of these. The holes are long and wide with large undulating greens, flanked by tall trees. The course has been designed to hold major golf events, such as the Azores Open, which takes place here each year.

Parque de Floresta Boavista

Vale de MilhoVale de Milho is a short nine-hole course located close to the village of Carvoeiro. It uniquely comprises of par-3 holes and only has a total length of 926 metres. That said, many golfers find this course quite challenging and very attractive, thanks to its waterfalls and wonderful views over the sea. So, if you want to practise your short iron shots, spend some time in a beautiful and relaxing landscape and enjoy yourself at the same time, you will not be disappointed by this course.

BoavistaOpened in January 2002, the Boavista golf course is one of the Algarve’s most recent courses and is built in the natural Algarvian landscape. The 18-hole Championship course is a design by Howard Swan. Built on a flat area just 200 metres from the Atlantic, the course is close to Praia da Luz beach. Half the course is located in the National Agricultural Reserve; typical trees of the Algarve (almond and carob) and ancient ruins form the characteristic landscape of this versatile course. One of the most unforgettable holes is the spectacular seventh, a par 4 built with the sea as a backdrop and panoramic views sweeping from the coast at Praia da Luz across to the mountains Serra de Monchique.

Parque de FlorestaSituated in the westernmost part of the Algarve, only 15 minutes away from the city of Lagos, this varied course spreads over the slopes of the hills overlooking the ocean. The Parque da Floresta golf course was designed by the Spanish architect Pepe Gancedo, whose general philosophy is to interfere with nature as little as possible. The fairways therefore accompany the natural contours of the terrain, spreading along the valleys and gorges, with their vineyards and eucalyptus groves, bordered by olive-trees, palms and pines. With an enjoyable par-71 course and full resort facilities, Parque da Floresta always proves popular with tourists.

Onyria Palmares The new Palmares Golf Course is a course of great beauty. It recently reopened, with a brand new layout designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr that perfectly blends mountain and coastal views. The par-71 layout uses a blend of manicured landscapes which boast a mix landscape of white sand and high dunes. New layout has plenty of breathtaking views to Alvor or to the sea mixed with great holes in the dunes. Located close to the historic city of Lagos, Palmares offers a wonderful blend of beach and mountain scenery. Its clubhouse affords a fantastic panoramic view over a 25-km stretch of Atlantic coastline. The Torneio das Amendoeiras em Flor, the oldest amateur tournament in the Algarve, has been played here since 1977.

Pestana GramachoAnother of the Pestana Group Courses, this course is the brainchild of Nick Price, the former world No.1 player and renowned golf course architect, Ronald Fream. Together they have created a uniquely designed 18 hole course with 27 varied greens that enable the golfer to play the same course with new challenges several times. This Championship course hosted the Portuguese Ladies Open in 2005 and 2007, and prides itself on maintaining tournament standard conditions all year. The design technique involves well guarded greens with clever bunkering that makes the player think before going directly for the pin. Some times the centre of the green is a better option. The boulder outcrops and dry stone walling to the fig, carob and olive trees, have been complemented by art fully positioned lakes and bunkers.

Pestana Vale da Pinta Pestana Alto Golf

Pestana SilvesPestana Silves is a serene spot, but the course is anything but the proverbial walk in the park. From the very opening tee shot, the golfer is faced with water hazards on both sides, rewarding the brave with an easier approach to the green. Silves encourages and rewards attacking play. The excellent condition, all year round, is ideal for low scoring. A constant text of precision play will be rewarded with birdie chances. Most holes offer a spectacular mountain and valley view, overlooking palm trees and olive groves. This new course is designed by Sir Henry Cotton and is located in an quite part of the Algarve.

Pestana Vale da PintaThe Vale da Pinta Course is one of the best-designed courses in Europe. Inaugurated in 1992, it is a Championship course with an exceptional layout designed by the famous American golf course architect, Ronald Fream. Since 1992 it has earned a deserved reputation for the outstanding level of maintenance of the course, and its design, which makes it a challenge to golfers of all standards. The Pinta Course was 8 consecutive times host to the Seniors Tour. The fairways are Bermuda grass, while strategically positioned sand bunkers protect the greens, clad in Pen Cross Bent, and two ornamental lakes influence play at four different holes around the course.

The rolling fairways and elevated

Alamos Morguado do Reguengo

Morguado do ReguengoSituated in the Barrocal region of the Algarve, many call this a miniature paradise with valleys, lagoons, forests, vegetable gardens, orchards and a variety of wild animals. This championship course ranks as one of the toughest and longest of all courses in the Algarve. The testing 6,399 metres par-73 layout suits the longer hitters. The course consists of five par-5’s, nine pa-3’s and four par-4’s. Big greens and deep bunkers are common place around the course. Two lakes come into play on the front and back nine. Given the challenge on offer, it would be advised to use the practise facilities before taking on this course. On offer is a practise area, driving range, chipping green and putting green.

AlamosOpened in 2006, the Alamos course is one of the latest courses to be added to the golf portfolio in the Algarve. Lying to the north of Portimao it’s located in close proximity to Morgado do Reguengo golf course. The setting is a large 980 hectare estate through undulating small valleys. This course is designed with big putting surfaces, which places a stronger emphasis on good putting skills. In some parts, the greens are quite undulating with several tiers. Deep bunkers that are deliberately hanging close to the greens require accurate approach shots. This course is full of character and is rapidly growing in stature.

Pine CliffsOpened in 1990, Pine Cliffs is a compact 9-hole golf course that is surrounded by magnificent old pine trees. This is not a long course, but it does demand accuracy. No more so than the much pictured devils parlour, a challenging par-3 that crosses the cliffs, with breathtaking views to the Atlantic Ocean. The Pine Cliffs golf course provides a well equipped golf academy that meets the requirements of both the hobby golfer as well as the tournament player. Celebrities are often spotted at Pine Cliffs, as they holiday in the luxurious Sheraton Hotel that is onsite. For several years, the club president was British motor racing star Nigel Mansell.

Oceanico FaldoSurrounded by rocky outcrops and meandering water features, this Nick Faldo designed golf course is designed to test accuracy. The course is full of character - ancient olive trees, mature trees, cacti, wild herbs and desert scrub bunkers of crushed limestone. Due to its elevation in some parts, the course boasts stunning views of the Alcantarilha countryside, over the large orange groves to the mountains in the distance. Positional play is key, but there are some great risk and reward holes on offer too, especially on the earlier holes that play close to the clubhouse. There are many feature holes, particularly on the inward nine holes. Mastering the massive par 5 thirteenth, descending, with the wind behind, will demand consistent shot making all the way to the green. Holes 14 and 15 continue the challenge, playing amongst rocky outcrops. After leaving high ground to the west, the eighteenth brings the final chapter to a close with a magnificent par 5. By then, a drink in the stunning clubhouse has been well earned.

Oceanico O’ConnorPerfectly complementing the Faldo Course, whilst taking advantage of the rich valley soil in contrast to the arid hillside, Christy O’Connor Jnr’s course at Amendoeira offers no less of a challenge. Large areas of water demand accurate play and creative shot making, and these lakes and streams are to be maintained as a wildlife sanctuary. Holes 7, 8 and 9 are cleverly guarded by a lake that comes into play on a few occasions. This lake has been stragetically designed so golfers think that it is just there for astetic beauty but they could get caught. Locals call it the Amen Corner of the course. Other large bodies of water with meandering features will challenge golfers throughout the round. The 18th hole brings a fantastic finish, a gentle climb with the river running along the right hand side. Once you get up there and look down on the golf course, you will feel you have been blessed.

Oceanico Old Oceanico Laguna

Oceanico PinhalPinhal is the second oldest golf course in the Vilamoura region. Although it was originally designed by Frank Pennink (who also designed the Old Course), several modifications were made by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1985. One of the major change was to lengthening the course to 6,353 metres to cater for advances in modern technology. The clubhouse was also completely renovated at the turn of the millennium, to now boast stunning panoramas from the large veranda. A game of golf at Pinhal is chatacterised by gently sloping terrain which is enclosed by numerous umbrella and Atlantic pines that tower over the fairways. There are a few waters features, like well positioned ponds but most are there to catch a very errant shot.

Oceanico LagunaThis modern course is laid out over low lying coastal terrain. Its many water hazards and few trees makes it considerably different from the other courses in this area and many of its holes convey a links feel. u.S. golf architect Joseph Lee designed this course which has been subject to continual improvements over the years. Measuring 6,121 metres from the white tees, the par 72 course includes several lakes which influence play on a total of 11 holes. In addition to acting as hazards and emergency water reservoirs, these lakes serve a useful purpose in attracting a variety of aquatic birds, both resident and migratory, as well as amphibians, otters, terrapins etc. Apart from the lakes and an impressive total of 79 bunkers across this design, another hazard is the wind that frequently blows over this somewhat exposed location. Oceânico Laguna shares a large, welcoming clubhouse with the neighbouring Oceânico Millennium Course.

Oceanico OldAny golf course with “old” in the name always describes a charm and a layout untouched beauty. Although this course has had a facelift of two since it opened in 1969, no major changes were made to the magnificent layout. Situated in the heart of the Vilamoura a mere 20-minute drive from Faro airport, this Frank Pennink designed parkland style layout is one of the oldest in the region and renowned all over the golfing world. Often described as the Grande Dame of Algarve courses, it meanders throughout impressive pine trees which line most of the holes. As with all Vilamoura courses, environmental protection practices are strictly adhered to by means of detailed management systems in line with guidelines established by ISO 14001 standards, Green Globe and Committed to Green programmes. This is one of the courses in Portugal that will always stay in the memory of visiting golfers. After an enjoyable 18-holes on the Old Course, a fully serviced clubhouse awaits those who feel they’ve earned a nice cold beer.

Oceanico MillenniumThe aspect of this course leads itself to strong winds, which usually comes into play. In general, the course is fairly exposed, although some earlier holes play between pine trees - similar to the neighbouring fairways of the Old Course and Pinhal. In this more wooded area, the fairways are narrower and require greater accuracy - while the rest of the course has a clear landscape enriched by lakes at the 4th, 17th and 18th holes. Major work was put into refurbishing this course by Martin Hawtree, the renowned uK golf architect. The work commenced in May 1999 and included the complete rebuilding of the tees, greens and bunkers. Changes were made to the layout or structure of the old nine holes, but several new design features were incorporated with a view to simplifying the strategy of the course and in order to make it more golfer-friendly. The end result is an exciting 18-hole course that makes it one of the main courses in Vilamoura.

Salgados Golf Course Quinta Do Lago South Course

Quinta Do Lago North CourseIn case one designer wasn’t enough, the Quinta do Lago North Course has the boasting rights of requiring two architects. The first was William Mitchell (who designed the South Course) who was responsible for 1 to 5 and 15 to 18 in 1974. The other holes were designed by Joseph Lee, which opened in 1989. The terrain was to inspire many future designs. The umbrella pine trees crop up to catch the errant golf ball, while the creeping bent grass fairways are typical to Mediterranean courses. Regular players here are convinced that a person who draws the ball will succeed best, given the anti-clockwise arrangement of the holes. Many famous golfers have walked the fairways here, including “Ryder Cup” and “Curtis Cup” team members, who have been euphoric in their praise for this course, as it takes its place as one of the top courses along the coast.

Quinta Do Lago South CourseLocated close to Almancil in the heart of the Algarve lies the two golf courses at Quinta do Lago. The 6,900 par-72 South Course was designed by William Mitchell. Set in a pine forest, with small swelling hills dotting the fairways, it has hosted the Portuguese Open seven times and is a truly magnificent course. Although the course lends itself toward the better golfer, there are different tee positions on offer to cater for all categories, making the course pleasurable for all. The course regularly ranks high in global golf course rankings. It’s clever design will assess ones game, given the strategic bunkering, occasional water hazards and contoured greens.

Salgados Golf Course Situated in one of the best-known regions of the Algarve, to the west of Albufeira, Salgados Golf is already a ‘postcard’ of Portuguese golf. It’s proximity of the sea and the variety of lakes make this a very interesting test of golfing skills, different from other courses in the Algarve. If you stay in the popular resort of Albufeira, a colourful fishing resort with plenty of après golf, Salgados Golf is practically on your doorstep at only 3km away. The eighteen holes at Salgados Golf are pleasant with a welcoming Club House waiting for you at the end of your round.

Pestana Vila Sol Golf CourseThe magnificent 27-hole course at Pestana Vila Sol Spa & Golf Resort is surrounded by a vast 150 hectares. The resort is situated in the heart of one of the most highly developed tourist areas in the Algarve. It has stunning natural surroundings with a vast range of fauna, animal and plant life. At Pestana Vila Sol Golf you will find a fabulous Donald Steel design, which stretches along a wide valley, naturally sculpted by Mother Nature and divided into three loops with three different levels of difficulty: Prime, Challenge and Prestige. Pestana Vila Sol Golf has twice played host to the Portuguese Open, in 1992 and 1993. It was honoured by the Green Globe organisation in 1996 with the Green Flag award, certification of meeting their environmental requirements.

Its par-72 6,480 metre length is set amongst umbrella pines, cork-oaks and orange trees, owing to this previous state as an orange grove. The narrow Bermuda grass fairways and well defined Penn A4 greens require concentration and accuracy to navigate this testing route laid out on a rolling and distinctive terrain. Much is expected from this course over the coming years, and it is sure to grown in demand and popularity.

Vale de Lobo - Ocean CourseThe Ocean Golf Course features undulating fairways which run alongside nature reserve, before leading gently down to the shores of the Atlantic. Its emblematic holes are two challenging and spectacular Par 4s, the 11th and the 14th – which treat golfers to some of the most spectacular views in the Algarve – and the Par 3 15th, which runs alongside the beach. Playing to your handicap on The Ocean course is a difficult task, due to the challenging design and distracting beauty that it provides.

Vale de Lobo - Royal Course Pinheiros Altos

Vale de Lobo - Royal CourseThe Royal Golf Course has rolling fairways set amidst pine trees and beautiful lakes surrounded by wild flowers. Its features include the almost island green of the 9th and the famous 16th, with cliff-top carryover – one of the most celebrated golfing images in the world, which has become the veritable symbol of golf in the Algarve. But there are many other challenges along its length, in particular numerous narrow fairways, bordered by age-old pine forest, which make the Royal a real test of a golfer’s accuracy and concentration. This course was designed by top American golf architect Rocky Roquemore, based on original drawings made by Sir Henry Cotton.

Pinheiros AltosA relatively new course within the Quinta do Lago estate, Pinheiros Altos is an independent 27-hole course designed by Ronald Fream and Jorge Santana. The course has an unusual layout with three nines of contrasting character -- ‘The Pines’, ‘The Corks’ and ‘The Olives’. The Pines, as its name suggests, meanders through typical Algarvian pine woods whereas many water hazards must be negotiated coming home. The rest is much flatter but the holes work their way through a series of lakes requiring accurate driving and precise iron play. The greens have a reputation for being the most difficult to read and to hit because they are small and undulating and usually in very good condition. The course embraces part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, making this another course of beauty and challenge for players of all standards.

Monte ReiThe Monte Rei golf courses are set in the picturesque foothills of the Eastern Algarve, with sweeping views of the Serra do Caldeirão mountains to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. The first of two Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses - “Monte Rei North” - opened for play in June 2007. This par 72 Championship golf course measuring 6567metres from the Tournament tees is a truly unique design; with water coming into play on eleven of the eighteen holes. The golf course’s presentation is highly individual, each hole a design gem blending effortlessly into this natural canvas, from its ingeniously shaped and sculptured bunkers, to the impressive presentation and attention to detail making every hole as remarkable as the next. Monte Rei is truly worth a visit when in the eastern Algarve.

Castro MarimHaving only opened in 2000, Castro Marim Country Club has 27 holes being, the Grouse Course, the Atlantic Course and the Guadiana Course. The recently-built courses at Castro Marim are part of a truly exceptional tourist development, designed to provide unforgettable moments of leisure. It has a very special setting in the peaceful atmosphere of the eastern Algarve and was in fact the first course to be built in this region, offering players beautiful views over the Atlantic Ocean, the River Guadiana and the nearby nature reserve. What makes the Castro Marim Golf & Country Club really special is its unique blend of history, culture, nature, river, sea, beach and sporting facilities in one single setting, together with its exceptional service and quality.

Colina VerdeThe 9-hole Executive par 3 golf course is suitable for players of all levels. Straight forward enough to be enjoyable for beginners, but also testing enough for the experienced player wishing to sharpen their iron play and short game. With average playing time of one and a half hours, there is plenty of time if you so wish to take in one of the 18-hole championship courses in the locality the same day.

Quinta de CimaFrom Quinta de Cima Golf the views are spectacular and inspiring: from any part of the course, both the sea and the Algarve Mountains are a delight to anyone’s eyes. Old centenary olive and carob trees, together with the surrounding orange trees and vineyards, maintain the originality of the region landscape. It looks like as if the course has been there since centuries ago. This is a protected area and hopefully will remain this way forever!

Benamor Quinta do Vale

Quinta do ValeDesigned by Severiano Ballesteros, Quinta do Vale Golf Resort features an 18-hole Championship layout including 6 Par-5´s, 6 Par-4´s and 6 Par-3´s. The course has Bermuda grass fairways, Bent grass greens and the rough is abundant with Festuca & Ryegrass. Marvellously integrated into the landscape and with a great view over the Guadiana River, Quinta do Vale Golf Club sits in a natural valley and is always overlooked from the Clubhouse. At Quinta do Vale, players will notice Seve´s creativity as well as his promise: To please everyone no matter what their handicap is. Numerous dogleg holes, wide fairways and obstacles enhance the course quality and its breath-taking surroundings…

BenamorOfficially opened in March 2000, this course is the first golf course to open east of the capital of the Algarve, Faro, and lies just outside of Tavira. The owning Martins Dias family invited the late Sir Henry Cotton make a concept design for an 18-hole course. Sir Henry was inspired by the beautiful church next to the site of the Clubhouse and by its spectacular location. The final result is a delightful par 71 golf course of 5,500metres. Benamor offers all golfers a pleasant test of golf. The course is undulating but not hilly. The views of the mountains to the North and the Atlantic Ocean to the South are stunning. The greens, tees and fairways are always kept in good condition. Players’ accuracy is particularly called upon by the architects’ retention of as many of the old trees as feasible. These natural obstacles coupled with strategic placed bunkers and occasional water hazards make the course a worthwhile challenge.

Penha Longa (Monastery Course) Quinta da Marinha Golf do Estoril Oeiras Golf & Residences

Golf do EstorilGolf do Estoril is a championship course with bags of history and fame. One of the oldest golf courses in Portugal, Golf do Estoril offers its visitors spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean. It has become internationally famous because of its location close to the luxury seaside resort of Estoril and has long attracted some of the top names in world golf. The course has been used on numerous occasions for the Portuguese Open, as well as for international amateur championships. It is a short but challenging course, designed by Mackenzie Ross, who made excellent use of the surrounding pine-trees and eucalyptuses – which, coupled with the uneven terrain, make the course more a test of accuracy than of the ability to hit the ball long distances. The course is popular with golfers, so the addition of a second 9-holes is an additional benefit.

BelasBelas is a unique golf course. The layout is extraordinary, with several fairways and greens set in deep valleys, and it affords unforgettable panoramic scenery to golfers and visitors. The course was designed by the renowned golf course architect Rocky Roquemore. It has five lakes throughout its winding layout, fed by various small and picturesque waterfalls. The course measures 6,380 off the back tees, providing a tough par-72 layout. With its excellent variety of holes, the course is a pleasure to play, whatever one’s handicap level. It demands both skill and tactical play, and is acknowledged both locally and internationally as one of Portugal’s best constructed layouts. The course also boasts a driving range and two practice putting greens. The clubhouse offers all the services necessary for a championship course.

Lisbon Sports ClubOriginally Lisbon Sports Club dates back to 1880, when a group of English residents living in the Lisbon area, founded a Sports Club. By 1890 they had built a small six hole golf course in Alges. Then in 1962 the Club moved to Casal de Carregueira, where it remains today situated about 20 km from Cascais and Lisbon. The Martin Hawtree course was inaugurated with nine holes, five more holes were added a few years later and then finally in 1992 its eighteen holes were completed. A 5,278 metre par-69 layout means it is a playable course for all. The narrow fairways lined with beautiful old trees and abundant vegetation blend in perfectly with the natural surroundings. There is a comfortable Club House with its veranda overlooking the magnificent woodland.

Oeiras Golf & ResidencesOpened in early 2011, this new 18-hole golf course is located in Oeiras, between Estoril and Lisbon. It’s a par-71 course, with a total of 5,857 metres, designed by Santana da Silva. This new is sure to be an exciting addition to the portfolio of golf courses in Lisbon, as plans are well under way to have a club house, golf academy, hotel, housing, shopping and dining area and parks, all spread across an impressive 1,120,000 m2 piece of land.

Penha Longa (Monastery Course) Quinta da Marinha

Quinta da MarinhaLocated close to the lively towns of Estoril and Cascais and the majestic beach of Guincho is the Quinta da Marinha golf course. The Quinta da Marinha course forms part of a luxury development, where you can relax for a few days. Besides a great golf course, there also is the possibility to do horse-riding around the thousands of pine-trees or walk along the coast with the Atlantic Ocean as your constant companion. Built by the architect Robert Trent Jones Snr in 1984, the course is 6,100 metres long across generally flat terrain. Only 4 years after opening, it held the Portuguese Ladies Open (1988). There are a few good feature holes, no more so than the par-4 thirteenth. This 339-metre hole slopes down towards the sea with the Atlantic Ocean as its backdrop. The course is supported by a driving range, restaurants, bars, tennis courts, two swimming pools, golf shop and hotel.

BelavistaBelavista is located within the city of Lisbon, so not quite part of the Oeste region. It was the first Municipal golf course in Portugal and was opened to cater for the business man and social golfers would can only manage 2 hours of golf. This is a short and but difficult course as six artificial lakes come into play. This course is also ideal for a golfer that wants to practise their game before taking on a bigger course, as it has a practise range. It has three par-3’s and six par-4’s.

Penha Longa (Monastery Course)This nine-hole golf course is part of the Penha Longa golf resort. This is a perfect sister course to the Championship Course (Atlantic Course) - equally pretty but a fraction less demanding. Situated on the site of an ancient monastery, after which it is named, this course now offers golfers a fresh alternative and guaranteed game, should the Atlantic Course be busy. The Monastery Course (also known as Mosteiro course) plays 2,588 meters par-35 and is generally less undulating than the its sister course. Its lakes also provide their own special beauty and difficulty.

Paco do LumiarLocated in the heart of Lisbon, this friendly 9-hole course is designed for those who are looking for a leisurely game. Paco Do Lumiar is more than a golf course, as local families would congregate here for social functions and gatherings. The course is located in beautiful surroundings and is always kept in good condition. Golfers come here to make use of the practise facilities, get a lesson of the club pro and perfect their game before taking on the bigger courses.

Sesimba is a picturesque fishing town is located in a quiet little bay that is protected by the prominent Arrábida hill range that shield it from harsh northerly winds. In yester years, Sesimbra was primarily know as a quiet fishing villiage, reliant by domestic tourism. In recent times, there has been a surge of tourists heading to the increasingly popular region in South Lisbon. The sheltered bay has proven popular with tourists purchasing holiday or weekend homes. The calm waters and long sandy Sesimbra beach, that was awarded with a Blue Flag in 2010, are perfect for children to play safely. Watersports, deep sea fishing and golf have also proven prospered in the warm Portuguese climate.

But Sesimbra traditionally is a fishing village. Its harbour is busy with fishing boats and local fishermen proudly display their daily catches, as mini fish markets create a unique atmosphere. This wealth of excellent local cuisine, specialising in shellfish and fresh fish draws many from afar to sample the daily catches in the numerous local restaurants. Other culinary delights that deserve a special mention are: Cheese from Azeitão, Moscatel wine from Setúbal and honey from Arrábida, which are all amongst the mouth-watering flavours of this region.

History abounds the hills around Sesimbra as Castelo de Sesimbra, a 17th Century Moorish Castle, guards the town. The castle had fallen into disrepair, until the state took the initiative to invest in the complete refurbishment and restoration of the castle to its former glory, which now provides its current structure.

A few kilometres away to the West is a dramatic cliff top, or to the East is a virtually unspoilt nature reserve. Further down the road you will find the popular town of Setúbal, popular with tourists. Here you can get a bus into Lisbon or a quick ferry across to Troia, very possibly passing friendly dophins on your way.

Aroeira IAoeira I is located 20 minutes from Lisbon, to the south of the River Tagus, Aroeira offers golfers the perfect combination of a championship course set amidst exuberant natural surroundings. Frank Pennink designed this course in a pinewood dotted with wild flowers, which is a nature reserve inhabited by many different species of birds. Because of its densely wooded nature, the British press have christened this course the “Lisbon Wentworth”, due to its similarity with the famous golf course near London. In 1996 and 1997, Aroeira hosted the Portuguese Open on the European Tour. Make sure not to leave the area before taking some time to contemplate the vast expanse of sand, sea and sky close to the course at Costa de Caparica, a beach that lies at the foot of a fossile reef (a protected natural area).

Aroeira IIA new course in the Lisbon area, this course has a fairly different concept of golf from Aroeira I, consisting of large fast greens. Despite the inviting nature of its greens, the course becomes increasingly difficult as you work your way around the front nine. unlike its older sister course, the new course has bunkers on the fairways, some of them in the Scottish style of pot bunkers. But the sand traps are not the only obstacle that have to be taken into account as the course also have five large lakes, water is a fairly constant hazard, particularly at the last nine holes.

Ribagolfe IDesigned by Peter Townsend in October 2004, Ribagolfe always ranks high with the best in Europe for its layout, environments features and design. This sprawling resort boasts two par-71 layouts, some 45 minutes from Lisbon. Ribagolfe I was clearly designed to host championship events. The 7,370 yard layout might well scare a few golfers away, the bigger hitters can run into trouble as some holes are quite tight. The marvellous design blends natural sloping terrain amongst glorious cork oak-trees that line the fairways. Water features and deep bunkers are also cleverly positioned to catch the errant shot. Ribagolfe I favours the good putter, as the big greens are always in immaculate condition. This course is very popular with the travelling golfer and a must play when in this area. After finishing their round, golfers can enjoy the peaceful comfort of the fully equipped clubhouse, which also contains a restaurant serving some tasty specialities from the regional cuisine, or choose from amongst.

Ribagolfe IIBecause of the nature of its terrain, environmental characteristics and specific layout, this golfing complex rivals the best courses that Europe has to offer and occupies a third of the area of the Vargem Fresca Estate. Ribagolfe II is an 18-hole par 72 course designed by Michael King, a formed European Tour player. As with Ribagolfe I, Cork Oak-Trees are common place on this course. The wider fairways and lower yardage makes this a little more favourable than its sister course to members and higher handicaps. But, water hazards and contoured greens make it an enjoyable challenge.

Golden Eagle Campo Real

Golden EagleThe Golden Eagle (also known as Quinta de Briçal) is set on a vast property near Rio Maior, 55km North of Lisbon. Designed by American course designer Rocky Roquemore, this is a beautifully laid out golf championship course covers a vast area of land, with rolling hills and pine trees as its features. The clever use of over eighty bunkers and water features adds difficulty to this course, while adding a beauty and charm at the same time.

After your game you will find a welcoming clubhouse and restaurant that serves traditional meals with excellent wines, most of which are produced on the property. In the late summer evenings groups of golden eagles regularly soar high in the sky, reminding golfers that this course truly is at one with nature.

Campo RealCampoReal is a luxury 5-star resort in the west countryside of Portugal, just 30 minutes north of Lisbon and 20 minutes from the beaches of the Silver Coast. Set in tranquil rural surroundings, the uniquely charming 18 hole, par 72 golf course was designed by the renowned Donald Steel. Lying in the midst of dramatic rolling hills and wooded valleys, the course will challenge and delight even the most experienced players. The course played host the Portuguese Ladies Open on the Ladies European Tour in June 2010. Stunning views greet you on invitingly elevated tees, while the undulating greens test both your judgment and skill.

Golf do Botado Part of the Atlantico Golfe Hotel, the 9-hole course is located 80km north of Lisbon in the quiet fishing port of Peniche. This is a hidden gem, and any who travel to play here are always surprised by its quality. It is a links style course, benefiting from its location beside the sea and natural terrain. There are some well positioned water features on the course as the course demands accuracy from the player. Bunkers are plentiful and wind always plays a factor. Vimeiro Another 9-hole resort course, Vimeiro is attached to the Hotel Golf Mar and is part of their facilities. This is a short course and golfers generally have a good chance of beating their handicap. Trouble on this course comes in the form of River Alcabrichel, which runs parallel to one side of this course. Accuracy is key at this course and its enjoyable for all levels of golfer. The city of Porto is the second largest city in Portugal, after Lisbon. Its core industries are shipping and trade, owing to the Douro River. It cuts the city of Porto in half, providing a divide between the North Bank and South Bank, which are connected by a series of wonderful bridges dating back to the 18th century.

The ancient city of Porto is a world heritage site, boasting Romanesque chapels, baroque

churches, historical monuments and twisting steets. It also is the much celebrated home of Port wine, from which its name is accredited to. Boat trips on the Douro River are very attractive and interesting for tourists, as you observe the vine-filled Douro valley that will eventually be cultivated in world-famous Port wines. The popular dish of “tripe” is also associated with Porto, and chefs here have mastered the art of this appetising dish.

Estela Club de Golf Miramar Oporto Quinta do Fojo

AmaranteDesigned by Jorge Santana da Silva, Amarante is an 18-hole par-68 course that opened for play in 1997. It is located in the town of Amarante at the Quinta da Deveza estate. Testimony to its design and maturity, the course was quickly chosen to host the National PGA Championships in 1999 and 2000.

With the towering mountains of Marao and Aboboreira as its backdrop, the setting of Amarante course is typical of the stunning mountaineous scenery of Northern Portugal. Its waterfalls and lakes provide a pleasant experience for the golfer. Located at 600 metres above sea level, its no surprise that Amarantes blueprint is one of hills, slopes and undulations. Starting at the 1st hole, your tee shot is elevated to a 495 metre par5. Its narrow fairways demand accuracy off the tee, and lakes that are brought into play on 3, 7, 12 and 17 demand respect.

Vale PisáoThe Vale Pisão Golf Course has 9 holes (par 37 with 3266 meters) putting green and a practice range. The course layout follows the aesthetics of the terrain, fitting in naturally with the landscape and taking advantage of the slopes, the vegetation and the streams. This gives a varied layout, with interesting and balanced challenges, where shorter holes, of evident beauty and strategy, are mixed with more difficult, complicated holes. Designed to protect environmental values, the features of the Vale Pisão Golf Course, make it ideal for playing golf at the top level in terms of quantity, quality and variety.

Quinta do FojoIn stark contrast to the bigger courses in the area, Quinta do Fojo is a pleasant 6-hole course that plays to a total of par-60, when played three times. unveiled in 1997, this enjoyable course is located across the river from Porto, which proves popular for midweek golfers to practise their shots on the shorter holes. Quinta do Fojo is a golf course you visit to sharpen your short game and every golfer could do with that.

OportoPorto’s links course portfolio is boosted by a genuine links course with deeply rooted values and traditions. Inaugurated in 1890, this par-71 course plays to a professional length of 5640 metres. This would be slightly shorter than modern day courses, but what’s lost in length on this old style course, is made up on narrow and undulating fairways, with strong northerly winds.

The course is located 17 kilometres south of Porto, close to the wonderful beaches of Espinho. As part of the “Espinho Golf Week”, Oporto Golf Club has been hosting a competition called the “Skeffington Cup” since 1891 without any intermission. This is arguably the oldest golf club competition in the world, again reiterating its values and traditions.

Estela Club de Golf Miramar

EstelaIt’s a simple fact that Irish golfers love a quality links course. At Estela Golf Course, you won’t be disappointed. Excluding the use of Bermuda grass, this is a course that ranks as high as the best links courses in Ireland. This prestigious links course is considered one of the top 10 courses in Portugal and has already hosted two European Tour events, namely the Portuguese Open in 1991 and the Atlântico-Vinho Verde Open in 1990.

Build in 1988, this par-72 Championship course is located at only 20 minutes from Porto’s international airport and located in the lively summer resort of Povoa de Varzim. Owing to its exposed sandy terrain across 3 kilometres, punishing rough, influencing trade winds and quick greens, players that manage to hit their handicap at Estela should feel very pleased.

Club de Golf MiramarThis is a 9-hole course, built in 1932 to encourage Portuguese nationals to take up the game of golf. It is a long-established golf course and one of the oldest in Portugal. Recent improvements have been made to its original design by the much celebrated course architect, Howard Swan.

The course can be found in a popular seaside resort along the north coast, running adjacent to the golden beaches of Espinho and Porto. Sand dunes and stunning ocean views are widespread on this exciting 9-hole course. Full catering and clubhouse facilities are available after your round in a friendly and welcoming environment.

Quinta da BarcaIn 1997, Quinta da Barca 9-hole course was opened for general play. It’s gentle design but playing at over 3800 metres from the back tees, this is not a simple course by any means. The greens can be quite undulating and cleverly placed bunkers and lakes provide obstacles to achieving a good score. For the second round of nine holes, there are a completely different set of tee boxes.

Set in a magnificent setting along a river bank, the course is located at Esposende. The course is supported by a marina, spa, restaurants, shopping malls, and two aparthotels with a swimming-pool and tennis courts.

Oporto Quinta do Fojo

Ponte de LimaPonte De Lima Golf Course is located some distance inland, away from the punishing northerly winds that can be gruelling on the links courses. It is a typically mountainous course that is set in heavily wooded terrain, distinctive to northern Portugal. Built in 1995, this par-71 course is spread across a vast six kilometres terrain, abundant in vegetation and it possesses some restored mansions that serve as service facilities.

The two 9’s are dissimilar in design, the first nine set amongst age-old trees that passes though a raving, and the second nine are situated in the valley of Quinta de Pias, enclosed by vineyards, cornfields and apple and pear trees. Ponte de Lima is also known for its famous par-5 third, which at 622 metres long is the longest hole in Portugal and one of the longest in Europe. Just achieving a par five here alone, makes the visit worth while.
