Craft Days, Shindig brought action to areaBY SHIRLEY POFF-MCMAHAN
CRACKERS NECK NEWS • 523-4769
Our community was saddened at thenews of the passing of Billy Chandler lastweek. Billy will be missed by his familyand all those who had the privilege ofknowing him. Our prayers and thoughtsare with the Chandler family.
The Home Craft Days and the PowellValley Shindig brought a bit of action tothe town and communities over the week-end. Many old friends and classmatestook advantage of the time to re-connectand re-kindle friendships. The mountainsadded their beautiful colors into the falltheme of the occasion.
It is amazing how you can take thesimplest materials and make crafts anddecorations. Someone had taken a pieceof an oak stem and cut it into a beautifulflower. The petals looked exactly like aflower. It had been sprayed so that it had
the fragrance of a flower. The one thatmade it did a wonderful job. The quilts arealways beautiful and the stitching alwayseven on them.
Throughout the years I have seen sun-shine, rain, and cold enough weather tobring snow to our area at this time of year, but I don’t think I ever saw the windblowing dirt and sand.
Friday the visibility along the ridgeswas very low. All reports were that it wasthe wind storms from Texas andOklahoma blowing the dirt and sand ourway. I didn’t think too much about it untilSunday, when we went to get in our car. Itwas then that I saw something on thewindshield.
It looked like one big spider web. I
thought someone had gotten a Halloweendecoration and put it on the car window. When I got closer I could see that it was-n’t a decoration but fine webbed lines allthe way across the front and the back win-dows. It was grains of sand that were con-nected together as thin threads shapedinto one huge spider web on each win-dow.
I really wouldn’t have wanted to bemuch closer to those states. I can imaginehow much dirt and sand would accumu-late in closer areas. The droughts duringsummer have been a problem to thoseareas, now the wind is carrying their soilaway. These conditions make problemsfor the next growing season, not to men-tion the health problems that can becaused by pollution.
I was glad to receive a call Sundayfrom Barbara Boggs Ramsey in SouthCarolina. It is always good to be able totalk to friends that have moved away fromour area.
Sylvia Zirkle and daughters, SherryTrinkle and Sheila Adldoost, visited theCraft Fair Saturday and then spent theafternoon in Kingsport.
Please remember all those that aresick. So many have been affected by theflu-type symptoms that have been passedaround. Remember our school children, our troops, our nation, and the upcomingelections.
We listen to those in authority andthose hoping to be elected. They seem totalk without saying anything, they ask forour support without being honest. Theyonly press on the wrongs of the past andthen ask us to not question their plans forour future.
Can we really take them at their word? Are they really putting the good of thepeople before the good of their party orthe good of themselves? It would be niceif they would be honest in their plans andtheir agendas that they are asking us tosupport.
