IF you’re in the market for acountryside retreat from thestresses of daily life thenthis property could be foryou.

Set off the main road, yet not toofar from the villages of Parbold andNewburgh, privacy is one of theproperty’s most attractive features.

Called Lowes Farm, this countryestate is located off Cobbs Brow Laneand set within four acres of land, which include a detached Georgianresidence and a traditional barn. Both are Grade II-listed buildings.

Reclaim your home with

WE all want ourhomes to lookwonderful, buttight budgets canput costly

furnishings and luxury homewareout of reach.

However, there’s a treasure troveof bargains to be found – if you’reprepared to explore car boot sales, market stalls, antique fairs and auc-tions and websites such as eBay.

If you’ve previously dismissedtheir wares as just someone else’sjunk, or goods that are unfashion-ably past their sell-by date, thenyou’re missing a trick. Not only issecond-hand chic one of the cheapestways to transform your home, it’scurrently all the rage.

Unlike buying new items, whenbuying second-hand you can end upwith an individual, one-off piecewhich has a history and tells a story– for a fraction of its original price.

“Flea market finds put the funback into shopping, and you don’thave to worry about getting a hugecredit card bill at the end,” says styl-ist Liz Bauwens, co-author of FleaMarket Chic, which reveals thriftyways to create stylish interiors.

She added: “It’s also about creatinga sense of history and a home thatreflects your life and personality.”

Reassuringly, you don’t have to bea regular viewer of Antiques Road-show to know how to spot the rubiesamong the rubble.

“Forget about investment – simply

go for things you love,” saysMs Bauwens.

“Focus on just a few types ofobjects that you like so youcan start a collection or followa theme. Have a mental list ofwhat you’re looking for – thiswill stop you accumulating ajumble of objects which haveno cohesion.”

So turn homeware detect-ive and track down treasuresto transform your rooms.

MIX NOT MATCHCollections of interesting items

can become focal – and talking –points in rooms. It could be vintagechina, colourful pottery, paintings orquirky displays of anything fromold-fashioned utensils to antiquehand mirrors. The only limit is yourimagination.

“The trick is to be methodical. When you go to a market or second-hand sale, always start at one endand work your way down each row, looking at every stall in turn fromone end to the other,” advises MsBauwens.

“Don’t dart about, as you can eas-ily miss things. Over time you’lldevelop an eye, and soon learn tospot your favourites in a pile of clut-ter. Look out for familiar shapes, col-ours or designs.

“Don’t despair if you findsomething you like that has a smallflaw or chip – if you are prepared tomake minor repairs, it will only addto their charm.”

WHERE TO BUY: Charity shopsand car boot sales are great sources. To find out about ones taking placein your area visit www.carbootjunction.com or www.carbootsales.org. A huge number of antique fairsare held across Britain, such asKempton Antiques, at Kempton park,Surrey (www. kemptonantiques.com)and the International Antique andCollectors fair, held at various loc-ations (www.iacf.co.uk).

TRICKS OF THE TRADEMost furniture stores have a sec-

tion where slightly damaged goods,or ex-display models, are sold at dis-

counted prices. It’s always worthmaking an offer or cutting costs fur-ther by asking for free delivery.

Provided you’re happy with theshape and quality, you can always getcreative and give it a facelift with acoat of paint to hide any defects, orensure it harmonises with yourscheme.

“Paint isn’t just for walls andfloors,” Ms Bauwens points out.“Few people would think of paintingsoft furniture such as a leather sofa –but if you haven’t paid much for it inthe first place, then you have muchless to lose.” Always test a smallpatch first to check for colour fast-ness.

Look for pieces of furniture whichcan be broken up and remade –church pews can be re-cut intotables, dining tables cut down to

a touch of shabby chic

make coffee tables or panellingre-used for kitchen counter tops.

Be creative – if there’s a particulardesign or pattern you like, try sten-cilling. Floorboards, stairs and cup-boards all lend themselves to thistechnique.

WHERE TO BUY: Check out siteswhich specialise in second-hand fur-niture, such as www.preloved.co.ukor www.usedfurnitureforsale.co.uk.

SEW EASYBeautiful, quality fabrics can be

hugely expensive but ends of lines, odd rolls or samples offer a moreaffordable solution.

“Finding genuine vintage fabricsfrom the days before modern dyes isgetting harder,” says Ms Bauwens.“But many companies manufactur-ing today reproduce old patterns, and these are now availablesecond-hand too.

“Cut partly-damaged fabrics downto make pillows and cushions, lamp-shades and trims. A collection of fab-ric samples could be sewn togetherto make one curtain or a patchworkthrow.”

Drapes, curtains, sheets and bed-spreads can be found in flea markets.Though they will often be worn ormarked, they could be used to uphol-ster bed heads or make ornamentaldrapes for a bed.

WHERE TO BUY: The RemnantRoom specialises in vintage and dis-continued designer fabric remnants

and ends of rolls (www.theremnantroom.co.uk).

MAKE IT REALNew homes can lack character,

and old properties may have hadtheir original details stripped away.

If you long to turn back the clock,or enjoy more period detailing, there’s plenty to inspire in salvage orreclamation yards.

“Original features – whether it’s a1950s kitchen or an 1850s fireplace –are celebrated, even if they’re quitebattered. They give a house a senseof belonging,” says Ms Bauwens.

“These sort of buys require careand planning. Make sure you meas-ure, so you know the piece will suitthe scale and size of the room. Alsocheck the quality and that it’s pos-sible to make any alterations so that

it’s suitable for modern living.”You can introduce modern and

contemporary touches throughaccessories – old peg rails and shav-ing mirrors make great additions tobathrooms.
