1 POST SHOW REPORT ON TRAFOTECH-2014 An International Experience TRAFOTECH-2014, the 9 th International Conference on Transformers was held on 10 th and 11 th January 2014, at Gulmohar Hall of Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), Tumkur Road, Bangalore concurrently with ELECRAMA-2014, the largest focussed exhibition of Electrical T&D and professional Electronics equipment. Theme The theme for TRAFOTECH-2014 was Transformers for Smart Grid”. TRAFOTECH-2014 “call for papers” received an overwhelming response from Indian and Overseas experts. 53 technical papers and 06 Supplementary Papers were selected for presentation by rapporteurs. Out of which more than 40% papers were from overseas authors. Program 1) As per the traditional practise of IEEMA’s international technical conferences; IEEMA has organized ‘Authors’ Meet’ one day prior to the conference schedule i.e. on the eve of 9 th January 2014. Objective of this Meet is to make the Authors familiar with the conference program, interact with Rapporteurs, Session Chairman, Organizing and Technical Committee members and upload & test all the presentations, reports etc. More than 50 Authors, Rapporteurs, Session Chairman, Organising & Technical Committee Members and other dignitaries mentioned were present. Mr. P Ramachandran, Chairman Technical Committee member welcomed all and explained the procedure for Technical Session and guidelines for Authors. Thereafter, session wise interaction took place among Authors, Rapporteurs and Session Chairmen. 2) The Inaugural session of the conference on Friday 10 th January 2014 attracted more than 500 participants including special invitees & press. Mr. Shrikant Potnis, Chairman- Organising Committee gave welcomed all delegates in his opening address. Mr. Raj Eswaran President IEEMA, delivered the presidential address. Guest of Honour, Mr. G Kumar Naik, MD, KPTCL shared his views on Karnataka State Government’s initiatives on Power Sector developments; especially in distribution strengthening. Chief guest Mr. B.N. Sharma, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India delivered the Inaugural address and declared TRAFOTECH 2014 open. Mr. P. Ramachandran, Chairman - Technical Committee gave the vote of thanks. Mr. M.L. Mittal received the Lifetime Contribution Award for his contribution to the Transformer Industry. A citation, Trophy and Shawl was presented to him by Mr. B. N. Sharma. Mr. M.L. Mittal thanked TRAFOTECH 2014 Committee and addressed all the delegates and shared his old memories of Transformer designing, technology absorptions etc. Mr. Aaditya Dhoot, Mentor IEEMA Transformer division had briefed the gathering on various initiatives of IEEMA Transformer division in past 2 years; highlighted about adequate availability

of capacity and technologies with Indian manufacturers and urged Government’s support for conducive policy environment for growth of this sector. Mr. S.K. Negi, MD, GETCO provided overview of ‘Standardization Manual on Power Transformer’ which was released by Mr. N. Murugesan, DG, CPRI & other dignitaries on the dais. 3) A special session was organized which was chaired by Mr. R. K. Tiwari, Chairman- Transformer division. In his opening remarks, he briefed delegates about the highlights of the Report published & given by IEEMA on ‘Indian Transformer Industry – 2009 to 2013’. Mr. Virendra Lakhiani, T&R gave a presentation on ‘Developments in Transformer Engineering since TRAFOTECH 2010’ Mr. P. Ramachandran, ABB, presented the delegates a broad historical perspective of Transformer manufacturing in India. 4) This session was followed by 6 Technical Sessions, which were as under.

5) TRAFOTECH 2014 committee has decided to felicitate Authors with ‘Best Paper Award’ in the name of ‘Dr. G. M. Phadke’, who was Secretary General of IEEMA and served the industry for more than 3 decades. Six papers from six sessions were selected for best paper award by a special committee. The winning papers & their authors are as under Session 1- HV DC plus transformers Author: Andreas Reising, Siemens AG, Germany Session 2- Accurate loss measurement Author: Aniruddh S Jhala, Transformers & Rectifiers India Ltd. Session 3- High Performance dielectric fluid Author: Baburao N Keshwatkar, Raj Petro Specialities P Ltd. Session 4- Environmentally friendly Transformers Author: Kausha Oza, ABB India Ltd. Session 5- Understanding Bushing failures Author: Arun D Yargole, Doble Engineering, India Session 6 - Protection of oil filled Transformers- Author: Antoine Philippe Magnier, SERGI, France 5) In the concluding session, Mr. P Ramachandran - Technical Committee Chairman summarized briefly all the deliberations, findings, observations and way forward.
