As we enter into the season of Great Lent, it’s good for us
to try do more. We prepare to greet Great and Holy Pascha
by fasting, prayer, by charity and service. We ask more of
ourselves during this holy season of abstinence so that we
can realign our priorities and thereby rediscover our need for
God. Confirmed in this hope, we become participants in His
love. As part of your Lenten discipline, plan to attend a
service you have not before, plan to be present in prayer, and
prepare to be changed, readied for joy.
Canon of St. Andrew
Where are we? As Christians, we say we stand in the midst
of a great line of saints and prophets and of sinners: those
whose lives have been inextricably altered by knowing God.
The meditative hymns of this service help locate us in this
legacy of faith by recounting those who came before and
inviting us to join their ranks of people in progress, learning
to be better and better.
Presanctified Liturgy
Each Wednesday of the fast is like an island of refreshment.
We can be strengthened by receiving Christ Himself into our
lives through Holy Communion.
Though we are busy, though distracted, these sections
of peace in the
middle of the week
help us know that
God stands with us in everything.
The Akathist
The Virgin Mary, mother of Christ Himself, is given to us as
a special friend; she is our mother too. Here, we ask that she
console us, that she help us to know her son, that she stand
as witness and companion to all the tragedies of our lives, so
that we can learn to hope as she did and does.
Pan-Orthodox Vespers
Being family is more than just tracing family trees; it is
choosing to live a shared life. Each Sunday evening of the
fast is a family reunion. We get to meet our cousins and
learn about them and enjoy being with them, sharing their
hospitality. And we get to see that our family is large and
interesting and diverse but shares that one necessary thing:
love for God, the Father of us all.
This year, do a bit more. Try a little harder. Go someplace
new. And get ready to welcome the joy of God into these
holy forty days. Lent is coming to prepare the way for
Paschal rejoicing. Don’t get left behind.
An Update
Our Annual Pledge
We are currently at the halfway point in reaching the goal of
$75,000. We still have many who may have overlooked this
important financial support to St. Nicholas. It would be
wonderful if we meet the goal especially since we have
entered the 75th Diamond Jubilee year 2018. A reminder
letter has recently been sent for your consideration.
Our Children
Our Sunday School’s dedicated people are ready with their
plans and lessons for the winter session so bring your
children, grandchildren, godchildren, nephews and nieces.
Your support is needed so they can enjoy this relationship
with the Church. Don’t deny these future leaders the
preparation to continue and build the next 75 years.
Our Choir
By now you noticed the Church services have been enriched
with new songs and direction by the Brehl family and
Damian Peters. Of course we have our regular volunteers
that devote their time, effort and skills to make the service
prayerful. Why not join the enrichment efforts and rehearse
with the choir.
Our Beautification
We are almost complete with Phase 1 changes in the Temple
of the Church. There are things that still need finishing. If
you haven’t made a donation there is still time to be a part of
this special effort.
Phase 2 is in progress, many of the new icons for the walls
have been reserved but there are some still available. If you
have interest in an icon please contact Father Nikodhim for
details.
Church Hall
Arrangements were made to have the hall and stairwells
painted. It is another step in maintaining our little church.
There is always something that needs to be done.

Well, this time of year always seems to be a quiet,
slower time of year after the Thanksgiving / Christmas /
New Year’s Eve holidays. Everyone seems to go into a bit
of hibernation, but it’s good to make the effort to come to
church & join us in community prayer and enjoy some good fellowship.
You can look ahead to our Valentine’s Dinner / Dance
on Saturday, February 10th which is always welcome at
this time of year, very lively and fun.
I urge you to come forward with your ideas for some
Daughters activities/events. I always say that this is
YOUR church, participate and invigorate it. It’s time for
us that have been holding up the fort for decades to step
aside. We are not going to run away, but will be nearby to
support the new players. We need you!! We have several
new, young families that are the future of St. Nicholas.
Let’s make it prosper together.
Also, if you are interested in reporting Community
News, please let me know. Many people that are not able
to attend services regularly have told me how they look
forward to learning what’s happening in our community.
It’s a way of keeping closeness, sharing joys and sorrows.
