I was very impressed with the standard of swimming and the effort of our four sports teams. The day worked like clockwork due to the exemplary behaviour of students, support of parents and organisation of staff. Later this week a team of students will head off to the district swimming carnival to represent our school. This is a quick turn around for parents and students as each year every school in the district books the pool (high schools as well) which means we have to juggle days depending on each schools commitments. I want to wish all our competitors fast times and good luck for the carnival. Congratulations to our age champions and winning house which will be announced at a later date. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Smith and Mrs Squires for their organisation of the day. Parents in Year 6 are about to start the process of selecting a High School for 2019. High school choice is difficult and many factors need to be considered. To help parents make this choice High Schools offer open days where parents can find out information about the school. My advice for parents is that you make the choice, do not hand it over to an 11 year old. Attend the parent information sessions, ask for an interview with the year advisor, Deputy or Principal. Make an informed decision that is in the best interests of your child. Congratulations to Kingscliff High School 2017 Year 12 students. One hundred and twelve Year 12 students sat for HSC examinations last year and from these, 84 Band 5 results were achieved across 27 subjects. This means that these students achieved results between 80% and 90%. Further, nine of our students achieved a total of 15 Band 6 results (between 90% and 100%) across 10 subjects. These students have also been recognised on the NESA (NSW Education Standards Authority) ‘Distinguished Achiever’s List’, congratulations to: Lydia O’Neill (three Band 6 results) Nina Jackson (three Band 6 results) Ellen Hall (two Band 6 results) Rosie Kahl (two Band 6 results) Clare Tunks (one Band 6 result) Heidi Thurgate (one Band 6 result) Ruben Brinsmead (one Band 6 result) Oscar Clark (one Band 6 result) Mylo Wilson (one Band 6 result) There are a few ex Pottsville students in this list. When your child gets to years 11 and 12 they make the decisions about subject choices and in this scenario, why big is better. Kingscliff High School has more choices in subjects than any other high school - public or private on the Far North Coast. Kingscliff can meet the needs of the most selective student. Well done Kingy High! In the next two weeks parents are invited to our “Meet the Teacher” evenings at approximately 5.00pm as per the dates to remember. The meeting is about building a relationship between parents and teachers. If you would like to discuss in detail your child’s learning and progress, then an individual meeting would be more appropriate and can be organised. I encourage all parents to attend and find out what’s happening in their child’s classroom. Coles dockets can be brought into school as we are collecting these. Mark Downward Principal

ES1 NEWSWelcome to Kindergarten for 2018. Students have enjoyed spending time with their buddies and are making friends with their Kinder peers. All students are beginning to learn our school routines and have settled in well.Parent Information Session - There will be a parent and caregiver information evening in your child’s classroom on Tuesday 20 February from 5.00pm - 6.00pm. An information letter was sent home on Friday for those parents who cannot attend. We are also holding a literacy and numeracy information session in Week 8.Assembly - Our first assembly will be held on Thursday 22 February at 2.10pm in the school hall. This assembly will be hosted by KS.Stage Levy - Thank you to all families who have paid the $10.00 levy. This levy helps us provide basic supplies for students.Shara Perry - Assistant Principal

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL NEWSYou Can Do It! (YCDI!) Organisation - One of the easiest ways to help your children learn the foundation of organisation is to encourage them to make lists or schedules. Lists such as what they need to have in their school bag each day for younger students to timetables for their weekly activities for our older students, will help reinforce this concept. Our very young students could even use lists with pictures if they are emerging readers. All of our Kindergarten students were supplied with a laminated chart during orientation outlining all of the things they need for school each day. This list, perhaps displayed on the fridge, will assist in developing organisational and independent skills. As a parent it is also important to model the skill of organisation by showing your children your lists or organisational schedules. As always when you see your children being organised don’t forget to praise them, “Wow, you really are organised aren’t you!” Parking for Parent Pick Up - We would like to remind parents using this service of the Tweed Shire Council parking rules that exist on Cudgera Avenue. The no parking sign indicates the areas in which cars are not to stop for longer than two minutes and cars are not permitted to stop at all in the ‘no stopping’ area. The police and parking officers regularly patrol these areas. Please familiarise yourself further with the information and detailed map that is available on the notes and forms section of the school website (Tweed Shire Council Parking Rules) or contact the office if you would like a printed copy.Bus pass applications - if your child requires a bus pass, application forms are now online. This information is available from the front office.Jackson C - Congratulations Jackson on receiving a letter from the Prime Minister. Perhaps Jackson is a politician in the making! Jackson sent a letter on the following: “Coal mining is bad for the environment because it causes green house gases or known as global warming. I sent a letter to the Prime Minister about climate change. Malcolm Turnball sent a letter back to me saying thank you for writing to me.”Jenny Foster - Deputy Principal Leonie Richards - Relieving Deputy Principal
