PovertyAccording to social scientists, poverty is determined by illiteracy level, no access to health care, no job opportunities, no access to clean drinking water, and sanitation, etc. Poverty LineA person is considered poor if his income or consumption is below a ‘minimum level’. However, different countries have different poverty lines. Poverty line is related to per capita consumption and income which are necessary to fulfill some basic needs. The factors necessary for meeting the basic needs are different for different places

Poverty In India...•Every 4th person in India is poor.•260 million or 26 crore people in India are poor.•India has the largest single concentration of the poor in the world.•Poverty in India varies from state to state. The rate of success for poverty reduction is different from state to state, thus causing inter-state disparities.• Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar are the poorest states of India.• Punjab, Himachal Pradesh ad Jammu and Kashmir are the best states when poverty is concerned.

One third of deaths – some 18 million people a year or 50,000 per day – are due to poverty-related causes: in total 270 million people, most of them women and children, have died as a result of poverty since 1990. Those living in poverty suffer disproportionately from hunger or even starvation and disease. Those living in poverty suffer lower life expectancy. According to the World Health Organization, hunger and malnutrition are the single gravest threats to the world's public health and malnutrition is by far the biggest contributor to child mortality, present in half of all cases. Almost 90% of maternal deaths during childbirth occur in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, compared to less than 1% in the developed world

Anti-poverty programmes such as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, the National Food for Work Programme, the Jawahar Rozgar Yozana, etc. have been initiated by the Government of India for the alleviation of poverty.
