SILVERSTAR & BIG WHITEBC CANADA

by Bob Suravage

If you like to ski the West and have ever thought aboutskiing in that vast part of Canada between Banff andWhistler, then this could be an opportunity you won’t wantto miss. Ten years ago, I had the opportunity to go on myfirst fam trip to a part of Canada I had never been. What Idiscovered was Silverstar and Big White, and I’ve alwayswanted Fall Line to offer a trip here. Why? British Columbiais a vast, mountainous province, framed by the CanadianRockies and the Coastal Range. In between lies theThompson Okanagan, a region of highlands that are home tothe ski resorts of Silverstar and Big White. Pleasant winterweather and light, dry powder prevails. Mountain summitsare a comfortable 7600 feet. The skiing terrain, snow quality, great lift systems, slopeside villages and gracious locals allmade for a terrific ski experience. The three ThompsonOkanagan resorts (Sun Peals being the other) were awarded“Best Weather in the West” from Ski Canada magazine(2007), and up to 7m (23ft) of snow can fall on the slopesin a single season. With access via Air Canada throughToronto to Kelowna, British Columbia’s second largest city, both full-service resorts are only one hour from the airportand two hours from one another.

A Fall Line first, this nine-day trip begins at SilverstarResort, where we’ll ski three full days. With over 3000 acres, from groomed cruisers to steeps and glades (including in-bounds backcountry), Silverstar offers skiing for all levels. There are 10 lifts, including a six-pack and four quads, serving 115 marked trails. Silver Star’s ski-in, ski-out, mid-mountain village is reminiscent of a typical 19th centuryBritish Columbian mining town with Victorian architecture.Boarded sidewalks and brightly colored shop fronts add aunique western flavor. We’ll be staying four nights in theVance Creek Hotel, part of the Silverstar Club Resortcomplex. Featuring one bedroom suites with two queenbeds, a living area, full bathroom, and a fully equippedkitchen. The complex has several roof-top hot tubs, tworestaurants, and The Saloon- the biggest bar on the mountainserving great pub fare. Overall, Silverstar Resort offers 12varied places to eat plus a market. A full hot and coldbreakfast buffet is included everyday.

Wednesday is our transfer day. After breakfast and checkout, we’ll visit Kelowna’s cultural district, which featuresshops, galleries, restaurants, bars, and a casino, for a lunchstop. Then it’s a one-hour transfer to Big White Resort.

We’ll be staying four nights at the Inn at Big White, located

WINTER PARK IN 2010April 8 to April 13th, 2010

By Deb Taraska

Are you looking for an awesome way to wrap up the2009/2010-ski season? Look no further than Winter Park,Colorado for some of the best spring skiing conditions. Makeplans now to join your Fall Line friends when we return tothis favorite ski location in April 2010. Make sure you are atthe meeting early so you do not miss out on the early sign upprice of $859! After August 18th it is still a low $899 for a greatgetaway.

This low price not only gets you access to a great ski townbut it includes round trip air transportation andground transportation in Colorado with five nightsat the Alpenglo Lodge. You will get fullbreakfast every day, four-day liftticket, group party, and thepersonal luggage tags. WinterPark, a walking ski town, alsohas a convenient free shuttle, itis filled with shops andrestaurants located near the AlpengloHotel. The combined towns ofWinter Park and Fraser offermore than 40 different types ofdining experiences. What elsecould you ask for?

Well, let me tell you about theawesome mountain…WinterPark… Offers 134 designatedtrails on more than 2,700total skiable acres,

Winter Park has a trackrecord for consistently receivinggreater than 350” a year of the stuff that we love - SNOW!

Just ask any Fall Liner who skied here last year about theplace and there is a good chance that in addition to mentioningthe skiing variety, they will tell you about Winter Park’sexcellent spring powder conditions. Without question, WinterPark presents something for all levels of skiing. This resortdelivers to you a magnificent symphony of chutes, bowls, glades and even cruisers. And, at this time of year, if you arelooking to shop, it also delivers some great prices on equipmentand clothing. Comprised of five very distinct mountains,Winter Park is almost equally divided between “beginner-intermediate-advanced” runs and the expert challenges.Whether skiing the Vasquez Cirque, Vasquez Ridge, ParsennBowl, Winter Park or famed Mary Jane trails, this location willquickly go on to your list of top US ski resorts.

Softball Game 1by Ken Heath

We are back at it again. The first game of ‘09 betweenthe Fall Line Ski Club and that other group from SouthJersey. This spirited rivalry is as tense as it is fun andthe tension showed in the first inning as both teamswent down 1-2-3. The Fall Liners looked as thoughthey were nervous and unsure of their superior talent. But the rival South Jersey players were looking forrevenge from their losses in ‘08 and racked up 2 runsin the second inning. That seemed to awaken “TheSleeping Giant” and Fall line answered with 4 runs oftheir own. With everyone relaxed the Fall Linersscored 5 runs in the 3rd and 5th innings and 6 in the6th to win running away 20-4.

With what looked as a stroke of genius Dave Lummistold the coach he didn’t seem to have his hitting strokeand asked to be moved down in the line up from thenumber four clean up hitter to number seven. Dave

then went 4 for 4 with 4 RBI’s and 4 runs scored. GeneZalewski also had 4 hits and 4 RBI’s and turned insome great defensive gems and “G” Respes added 3hits and two RBI’s. Ed Keating pitched a near perfectgame holding the power hitting South Jersey team tojust 4 runs. Our power hitters Steve Beach and MarkGoodman both hit towering home runs and combinedto drive in 5 runs. But once again the key to the gamewas our vaunted defense led by Chip Smith at short,Chris Nast in left and Jim Teesdale in right.

Afterwards both teams and all the fans went over andenjoyed a BBQ discussing our great and not so greatplays of the night. Thank you also to Nona Luce forgetting the hot dog cooking started so it was ready aswe all walked off the field Great job “Fall Line”.

Mark your schedules, game two is tenetaivelyscheduled for Thursday July 30th and game three istentatively scheduled for Thursday August 20th. Bothgames will be right at Barclay Middle School with aBBQ scheduled following.
