is PoE?What
Figure 1: Power over Ethernet: Utilize the Ethernet
cable wires to transfer power in addition to data
v PoE System ArchitectureThe specification of PoE typically requires two devices: the
Powered Source Equipment (PSE) and the Powered Device
(PD). The PSE is either an End-Span (ex: PoE Switch) or an Mid-
Span (ex: PoE Injector Hub), while the PD is a PoE powered
terminals, such as the IP Camera, IP Phones, Wireless Access
Point and etc., as shown in the figure 1.
In the PoE architecture, power can be delivered over data pairs
or spare pairs of standard CAT-5 cabling. In the standard
CAT-5 cabling, 4 wires are used in 10/100 Ethernet for power
transfer and the other 4 wires for ordinary data transfer under
PoE structure. Wherever the cable goes, the power goes too.
PoE power injector device plays either as a Mid-Span or an End-
Span terminal to deliver data and power. Mid-Span and End-
Span PoE power injector devices transmit power in different
ways which are illustrated below: [Figure 2 and Figure 3]
v Mid-SpanMid-Span device is placed between legacy Switch and the powered
device. Mid-Span is tap the unused wire pairs 4/5 and 7/8 to carry
power, the other four is for data transmission.
Figure 2. Mid-Span Power Delivery
v End-SpanEnd-Span device is direct connected with power device. End-Span could also
tap the wire 1/2 and 3/6.
Figure 3. End-Span Power Delivery
Based on the global standard IEEE 802.3af, Power over Ethernet
(PoE) provides an innovative, standard-based application to
deliver rich functionality and flexibility to your network. PoE is
a technology for wired Ethernet and allows the 48V electrical
power carried over RJ-45 wiring to each end-device rather than
by separate power cords. PoE enables IP network applications
such as IP Cameras, VoIP Phones, and Wireless Networking
more flexibly deployed regardless of the limit availability of
outlet and therefore helps enterprises improve productivity.
Widely adopted in the market now, PoE remarkably reduces
installation costs and improves management of network.

Power over Ethernet02
Pioneer of IP Innovation 03
Consider the following scenarios:
In order to minimize cabling costs, you are planning to install
the latest VoIP Phone system for your company’s new office.
The company staff demands for a wireless access point in
the public area behind the building so they could work on
their laptops in outdoor activities, but the electrical power
to the outside is not affordable.
Management asks for IP Surveillance Cameras and business
access systems throughout the facility, but they would rather
avoid another electrician’s payment.
PoE technology is the right solution for the above demanding
requirements and it helps to minimize the necessary wires
for the network distribution and lower the deployment
cost. Leading the PoE technology applications, PLANET
Technology has offered the various types of PoE equipments
in the market to meet the different powering requirements
of SOHO/home users, SMB and enterprises.
PLANET delivers the most cutting-edge PoE solutions which
offer the benefits as below:
v Reduce Installation CostsPoE devices use a single and standard Cat-5 Ethernet cable
for both power and data transmission, which eliminates
the needs of installing separate electrical wiring and
outlets. Besides, most enterprises have already run Cat
5 Ethernet cabling through the ceiling to every desktop.
The cabling for these new network applications is already
in place and thus eliminating the installation time.
v Easy DeploymentWith the RJ-45 connector design in PoE devices, it is easy
to add PoE powered devices such as IP cameras, IP phones,
wireless APs and Switches into the existing business network.
PoE helps your businesses grow quickly.
v Protect InvestmentNew networking applications can take advantage of an
Ethernet connection for both power and connectivity.
Furthermore, the 802.3af complied devices also provide
detection to protect the remote devices.
v Simplicity & MobilityBy using standard-based PoE products, networks can perform
the best solutions for the individual pieces of the network,
instead of being tied into a single vendor with a proprietary
system. PoE applications are highly flexible in mixing and
matching different vendors to ensure the most optimal
solution for business operation.
v Integration ManagementThe PLANET PoE Solution is able to fully integrate with the
hardware and software. For small scale of PoE deployment,
device-level management may be adopted easily. For large
scale of Power over Ethernet installations, such as IP Telephony,
PLANET provides management solution which could help the
powered devices automatically manage themselves. This
approach reduces the total configuration requirement and
eliminates configuration errors due to inconsistency between
the application and the network ports.
v Reliability with UPSPoE devices offer centralized power delivery by an
uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) which maintains
operation even when the main power fails. Mission critical
devices, such as IP Cameras and IP Phones, keep continually
working to meet client’s various demands.
v Centralized Power ManagementPoE smart PSE devices offer graphic user interface to
centralized control, plan and monitoring per port power
feeding / consumption of the PD device. It helps the System
Integrator to centralize power distribution via existing
Ethernet cables with the need to increase infrastructure.
Benefits of PLANET PoE Applications
Power over Ethernet04
v OfficeWith the business office expansion, the additional telephones
are required, however they could be installed in less cost via the
implementation of PoE IP Telephony system compared to the
traditional circuit wiring telephony system. PLANET PoE solution
helps enterprises to create an integrated data, voice, and powered
network. PLANET 802.3af compliant IP Phones can be installed
without requirement of an additional power cable because the
power can be provided from the standard Ethernet cable. PoE IP
Phones and Analog Telephony Adapter work perfectly with PLANET
Mid-Span and End-Span equipments which inject power through the
Ethernet cables. With PLANET PoE Solution, IP Telephony becomes
more reliable and cheaper to install, which helps enterprises save
tremendous cost when upgrading to IP Telephony communications
infrastructure. PLANET PoE IP Phones including Business IP Phones,
as well as PoE ATA, may be referred for more details in the PLANET
IP Telephony Solution Guide.
v TransportationIn modern time, more and more people use Internet
service during travel times, either for business or for
leisure. Besides the wired Internet network, the wireless
LAN would be more efficient for the transportation station
to provide high-speed and wide area Internet services for
travelers. With the PoE wireless LAN APs connected,
people can experience the wireless LAN roaming service
within the Wi-Fi coverage even when the transportation
itself like train, bus or ship moving on the way. By
adopting PoE Wireless LAN structure, the transportation
authority gains benefit from costing less while providing
better Internet services in wider areas for the travelers.
v FinanceThe PoE construction would also highly benefit to the financial /
bank security and communication system. The PoE IP Surveillance
system helps watch the bank / safe deposit security, the PoE
wireless LAN system provides the employee a convenient
Internet service and PoE IP Telephony system improves the voice
communicating in the bank with lower cost.

Pioneer of IP Innovation 11
Industrial Power over EthernetPoE feature is more often supported in the industrial
Ethernet devices for efficient operation in harsh
environments. The PLANET industrial PoE switch series
in-line power follows standard IEEE 802.3af and able to
give power to PoE compliant devices at the distance up
to 100 meters through the 4-pair Cat 5 / 5e UTP wire.
With Data and Power over Ethernet from one unit, the
Industrial PoE series shall reduce cables deployment and
eliminates the need for dedicated electrical outlets on
the wall, ceiling or any unreachable place. A wire that carries
both data and power lowers the installation costs, simplifies
the installation effort and eliminates the need for electricians
or extension cords.
Furthermore, there is only 24V DC input in some industrial
environments, the ISW-504Px / ISW-514Px series supports 24V
DC or 48V DC dual voltages input and able to provide more
wide range of industrial IEEE 802.3af PoE applications.
