CASE

"Pacemaker"regulates electricity supply in printing plant

were problems with the

Quality boostPersgroep Printing asked engineering rm and Nuon subsidiary Ebatech to investigate and analyse the quality of the electrical power supply. Measurements revealed the cause. Bestevaar: "You can regard it as a sort of noise or contamination of the electrical supply. When we started up the presses, it suddenly increased sharply, dealing a blow to the lighting and increasing the risk of press outage."

After making the measurements, Ebatech came with a plan for improving power quality. This consisted of neutralising the contamination by using six active dynamiclters to give the electrical network a quality boost. Jarno Schoen, Ebatech advisor: "ADFs are lters that, in a manner of speaking, remove the noise by applying an opposing current. You can compare this with a pacemaker, which generates an electrical signal to regulate your heartbeat and keep things under control. The ADF detects disturbances in the power supply in a split second.Within 0.2 millisecond it generates an opposing current, so the connected equipment does not see the disturbance." Meeting deadlinesRemarkably enough, the lters do not require an especially large capital investment, at least not compared with the problems they solve. The estimated amortisation time is two years. Although the new equipment has only just been installed, it is already clear that many problems in the plant have been cleared up – and the electrical installer doesn't have to visit so often. Furthermore, continuous monitoring is now in place – the installed instrumentation keeps an eye on power quality – so the company can now work on making the infrastructure even more ecient in the future. The biggest gain for Persgroep Printing is that production is smoother now. Bestevaar: "Production downtime is dicult to express in nancial terms, but that's what really matters to us. We have to meet deadlines every day, and every problem costs money. Our ambition is to be the best printing plant in the Netherlands. This means we have to ensure that the papers leave on time and that our delivery reliability is perfect. Partly due to resolving our power problems, this ambition has become a good deal more attainable."

DPERSGROEP PRIN TING

Persgroep Printing is a subsidiary of the Persgroep Nederland publishing group. The printing plants in The Hague and Amsterdam print not only daily newspapers, but also a large number of other newspapers and free local papers. Approximately 170 people work at the Amsterdam location. Among other things, six daily papers are printed there: NRC Handelsblad, nrc.next, Het Parool, De Volkskrant, Algemeen Dagblad and Trouw. That amounts to approximately 1 million papers a day.

NUON/EBATECH

The advisors from Nuon subsidiary Ebatech work with customers to optimise power quality. They do this by monitoring and analysing energy consumption and providing advice on installations and possible behavioural and organisational measures. Your account manager at Nuon will be pleased to provide more information on what Ebatech can do for your company.

Every day six daily newspapers roll o the presses at Persgroep Printing, and the presses practically never stop. For a long time the company was plagued by unexplained problems and equipment failures, until Nuon subsidiary Ebatech tracked down the cause and came up with a solution.

uorescent lighting in the Amsterdam printing plant of Persgroep Printing. A tter had to make repairs a couple of times a week, and the ballasts needed replacement every six months – something that normally occurs at most every ve years. In addition, starting up the presses caused problems in the electrical system. The main switches sometimes disconnected the printing presses without warning, which not only shut down production but also often disrupted the control system. It was a major problem according to Marcel Bestevaar, Facility Manager at Persgroep Printing: "Every problem causes a delay in the availability of the newspaper, so we absolutely had to do something. But we couldn't nd the cause of the problems."
