ML317 EOG Pod

ML317 EOG Pod

ApplicationsThe EOG Pod is used to measure and display eye movement and position. In the human the EOG Pod can be used in the measurement of saccadicand pursuit eye movements. It is ideal for use in undergraduate teachinglaboratories.

The ML317 EOG Pod is a signal conditioner designed to record horizontaland vertical eye position and movement. The device features a manual DCoffset and is supplied with three shielded lead wires with snap-onconnectors.

System CompatibilityThe EOG Pod connects to any PowerLab hardware units with Pod ports (8-pin DIN inputs). PowerLab and MacLab (except 4s, 8s and 16s) unitswithout Pod ports require the ML305 Pod Expander.

The EOG Pod is supported by the following versions of Chart and Scopesoftware:

WINDOWS MACINTOSH

• Chart v3.4.8 or later • Chart v3.6.3 or later

• Scope v3.6.3 or later • Scope v3.6.3 or laterNote: Earlier software versions do not support Pods.

Theory of OperationThe EOG Pod is a DC coupled biopotential amplifier with a fixed low-passfilter (500 Hz) to remove high frequencies. On the front of the Pod, anoffset knob is provided to remove DC drift. The offset control provides ±15mV of offset range (at input) for all range selections.

The EOG Pod utilizes the steady corneal-retinal potential in the detectionof eye movement and position. This steady dipole may be used tomeasure eye position by placing surface electrodes to the left and right ofthe eyes (Figure 2). When the gaze is straight ahead, the steady dipole issymmetrically placed between the two electrodes, and the EOG output isapproximately zero. When the gaze is shifted to the left, the positivecornea comes closer to the left electrode, which becomes more positive. There is an almost linear relationship between horizontal angle of gazeand EOG output (approximately ±30º of arc). Electrodes can also be placedabove and below the eye to record vertical eye movements and using twoEOG Pods, simultaneous vertical and horizontal eye movements can bemeasured (Figure 3).

ML325 Animal Oximeter Pod

ApplicationsThe Animal Oximeter Pod is suitable for the measurement of oxygensaturation in the range 70 to 100 %, or to display a pulsatile waveform

The Animal Oximeter Pod allows the non-invasive measurement of theoxygen saturation of arterial haemoglobin (SpO2) using a suitable Animal-Clip or Tail-Wrap transducer. The Oximeter Pod produces an oxygensaturation reading between 70 and 100% without the need to performany other scaling, or can display a photo plethysmograph pulse signal.

System CompatibilityThe Animal Oximeter Pod connects to any PowerLab hardware units withPod ports (8-pin DIN inputs). PowerLab and MacLab (except 4s, 8s and16s) units without Pod ports require the ML305 Pod Expander.

The Animal Oximeter Pod is Supported by the Following Versions of Chartand Scope Software:

Transducer CompatibilityThe Oximeter Pod is designed to operate with ADInstruments suppliedFinger-Clip, Ear-Clip, Animal-Clip or Tail-Wrap transducers. The OximeterPod should not be used with any other type of SpO∆i3 transducer asdamaged or inaccurate readings may result. The Oximeter Pod may beused with transducers manufactured by Nonin.

Theory of OperationThe Oximeter Pod is designed to measure blood oxygen saturation (SpO2)in pulsatile tissue. It does this by applying short pulses of light fromsemiconductor light emitting diodes in the transducer. The light is emittedthrough the tissue at two different frequencies and the level oftransmitted light and received light is measured. Calculations areperformed using the recorded level of transmitted light and the receivedlight, which is then used to derive the SpO2 reading. The light sources aresemiconductor diodes located either in a Finger-Clip, Ear-Clip, Animal-Clipand Tail-Wrap transducer. The Oximeter Pod produces an analog outputvoltage that is proportional to the oxygen saturation.

TransducersFinger Clip, Ear Clip, Animal Clip and Tail Wrap transducers connectdirectly to the 9-pin socket on the rear of the Oximeter Pod.

Pod Expander ML305

The Pod Expander is a front-end device designed to allow up to four Poddevices to connect to any MacLab or PowerLab that does not have Podports. The Pod Expander provides the same “hot plugability” as that of thePowerLab systems that have built-in Pod ports. It is compatible with thefull range of ADInstruments Pods.

System CompatibilityThe Pod Expander connects to PowerLab or MacLab hardware units in thesame way as a conventional ADInstruments Front-end. The Pod Expanderconnects both to the I2C expansion bus and up to 4 of the analog inputs ofthe MacLab or PowerLab.

The following versions of Chart and Scope software are required for thePod Expander and Pod support:

WINDOWS MACINTOSH• Chart v3.4.8 or later • Chart v3.6.3 or later• Scope v3.6.3 or later • Scope v3.6.3 or later

Note: Earlier software versions do not support Pods.

Some early models of MacLab/4S, /8S and /16S systems along withPowerLab/4S, /8S and/16S systems manufactured before December 1997do not support the operation of the Pod Expander. The software listedabove will generate an appropriate message dialog if this is the case. Ifyou should see this error message or are having trouble getting the PodExpander to work then call your ADInstruments representative.

Theory of OperationThe Pod Expander allows the addition of up to four Pod devices to aMacLab or PowerLab hardware unit that has no built in Pod support. ThePod Expander gets its power and control from the I2C expansion port onthe rear of the MacLab or PowerLab. The Pod Expander reserves four I2Cfront-end locations for the four Pod channels and provides the necessaryswitching and power distribution for each Pod. The PowerLab softwarewill periodically scan each Pod input on the Pod Expander to see if a Podis attached. If it finds one, the Pod will be installed on that channel.

Ink Pen This Ink Pen has a very small ink writing nib set in the sealed end. Thereservoir holds several drops of ink for tracings. The pen and reservoir aremounted on the end of a 100 mm (4 in) aluminum stem with a split forkmount for mating with levers. Supplied with a stilette wire to draw the inkthrough the nib. The EC1 50-0736 Pen Filler, available separately, is usedto fill the pen, see below. Some ink should flow through the pen while it isfilled to keep an air lock from forming that would impede ink flow.

Piston Recorders These high quality Piston Recorders are precisely manufactured. The glasscylinders are made of specially drawn and annealed glass tubing, whichhas been ground true. The aluminum alloy pistons are individuallymatched to the cylinders. The Recorders are extremely flexible andadjustable. The glass cylinder is mounted in a metal base and has a riffledtubing connector at the bottom. The cylinder is held in a split bushingoperated by a large knurled knob and can be vertically adjusted. Thealuminum alloy piston has a rocker arm that can be connected to any of 9holes in the writing lever arm. The holes are spaced on 4 mm pitch fromthe fulcrum. The writing lever arm has an adjustable counterpoise weight. The entire cylinder and piston assembly can be moved in and out of thehollow stem for horizontal adjustment, and locked securely in place whenadjusted. In this manner, the amplitude of the writing lever can beadjusted. The writing lever terminates in a connector for a writing point. Apressure transducer can be used in place of the pen. The stem is 9.5 mm(3/8 in) in diameter.

Pen Filler This Pen Filler is a small plastic syringe with a capacity of 1 ml, graduated by0.1 ml increments. It is used to fill the pen supplied with the writing points.

Tambours These tambours are for gas displacement indication measurements. Arubber diaphragm is stretched over a cylinder and held in place by arubber O-ring (supplied) which slips on and beds itself in a groove alongthe edge of the cylinder. At the base of cylinder is an inlet/outlet port for6.5 mm ID (0.26 in) tubing (not included). As volume change occurs, therubber diaphragm moves causing a rise or fall of the metal plate whichmoves the lever. Available in two sizes, the medium tambour has a 40 mmlong (1.6 in) diaphragm and 6 mm OD x 120 mm long (0.25 x 4.7 in)mounting stem. Large tambour has a 75 mm (3 in) diaphragm and 9.5 mmOD x 120 mm long (3/8 x 4.7 in) mounting stem and is used withinstruments such as the EC1 50-6154 Pneumograph. Amplitude is adjustedby moving fulcrum along mounting stem.

Standard Mercury Manometer The glass U-shaped tube of this Manometer is 300 mm (12 in) long and has abore of 5 mm (0.2 in). The scale is movable for zero adjustment, and iscalibrated from 0 to 250 mm in 10 mm increments. The Manometer mountson a standard 9.5 mm (3/8 in) diameter rod. Supplied without mercury.

• Two sizes available:– 40 mm (1.6 in) diameter diaphragm– 75 mm (3 in) diameter diaphragm

Weight Sets These Weight Sets consist of a hook/weight pan and nine pierced diskweights. The assembly hangs from the hook when the weights are inplace. Three sets are available with total weights of 10, 50 and 100grams. The 10 Gram Set has a 1 gram hook/weight pan with nine 1 gramdisk weights. The 50 Gram Set has a 5 gram hook/weight pan with nine 5gram disk weights. The 100 Gram Set has a 10 gram hook/weight panwith nine 10 gram disk weights.

Condon’s Sensitive Manometer This Manometer is twice as sensitive as the normal U-shaped tube StandardMercury Manometer. It will accurately sense pressures from 0 to 200 mmHg.It has a 280 mm (11 in) glass tube with a 2.5 mm (0.1 in) bore. The glass tubeis connected by tubing to a 25 mm (1 in) diameter mercury reservoir. Verysmall changes in the mercury level in the reservoir cause large changes in theglass tube. The scale is calibrated to compensate for the multiplying effect, sothat very accurate pressure readings can be taken. A small cylindrical float isfixed to fine stainless steel tubing and is kept vertical in the tube by a guiderod. An ink writing point is attached to the steel tube and is held against theKymograph Cylinder by a suspension wire and a guide weight. Mounts on astandard 9.5 mm (3/8 in) diameter rod. Supplied without mercury.
