President’s Message MISSION MOMENTS
Mission Moments are notes of thanks and
appreciation from our patients, families, staff
and visitors that are shared with the Saint
Francis Family as a reminder of our mission.
The submissions are reviewed by the Mission
Integration Committee prior to sharing. If you
have a potential Mission Moment submission,
please send it to Pastoral Care or call ext. 5146.
The Surgical ICU staff shared the
following letter:
My husband was admitted to Saint Francis ER
in late January. He had experienced a sharp
pain in his right ear and his blood pressure
was found to be abnormally high. Later that
afternoon, he was admitted to the SICU
directly from the ER. Allison Bollinger was
then assigned to his care in the SICU.
The decision was made to keep him overnight
in the SICU. Allison related to me that she was
not comfortable going off-duty and leaving
her patient without a specific diagnosis.
She explained that she would not be able to
rest that evening due to a “gut feeling” that
something was being missed.
Allison requested that a second CT scan be
performed. This scan revealed a rupture in
his main aorta. Dr. Bender, Dr. Nguyen and Dr.
Murdock made the decision to transport him
to Barnes Jewish Hospital by helicopter for
surgery. I am happy to report that his surgery
was successful and one month later, he is
recovering nicely.
We are extremely grateful to the Saint Francis
Medical Center physicians and staff. Every
person we encountered was caring and
professional. Nurse Allison Bollinger could
easily have gone home at the end of her shift.
Instead, she chose to follow her self-described
“gut feeling.” And that, they say, made all
the difference! In doing so, we feel she was a
critical factor in saving my husband’s life.
T he next two months are going to be exciting ones, but stressful too. It will
serve us well to remember a few things. Saint Francis has rolled out large
software applications in the past. Despite the promises of easy rollouts from
vendors, the journey is challenging. Electronic medical records (EMRs) are simply
the price of entry for getting into healthcare in the modern era.
How have we experienced these large rollouts in the past? There is always an
enormous amount of movement and energy to meet deadlines. Many teams
and sub-teams get put into motion. Sometimes they are connected and things
go smoothly; sometimes it feels like they are not. It is frustrating at times.
Transformation can be painful!
On the other hand, we must not lose sight of what Epic will bring not only to our
patients, but also to our processes and our ability to provide the highest quality of
care. To put it succinctly, Epic integrates the patient care process to levels we have
never seen. We bought this system to get better reporting capabilities and stronger
integration between our practices and the Medical Center.
While McKesson has served us well over the years, it has serious deficiencies. We
have a variety of EMRs that don’t talk to each other, the patient is asked repeatedly
to duplicate information for the provider, information is frequently omitted from
the patient’s record that has serious implications if the provider doesn’t have it, and
medication prescriptions are prone to errors. Epic changes all of that.
At the end of the day, we own the transition to Epic. We can choose to drag our feet
or champion the system and its utilization. Let’s all be Epic champions!
Steven C. Bjelich, FACHE-D
President and Chief Executive Officer
“Epic is Saint Francis’ most exciting venture ever, outside of construction.”

ROCHE RETIRES AFTER 40 YEARS OF SERVICE
Pam Roche, Epic Principal Trainer for the
Orders Team, will retire after almost 40 ½ years
of service at Saint Francis Healthcare System.
Roche began her employment as a nurse aid
in January 1976, but completed her nursing
degree just days after starting at Saint Francis,
and remained a nurse in the Medical Center
until becoming an Epic Principal Trainer in
March 2015.
“Each day is exciting. I absolutely love the
challenge of learning new skills, putting
together a curriculum to train physicians,” says
Roche about her current job.
After retiring, she looks forward to spending
time with her husband and two young
grandchildren. She will stay busy traveling,
sewing, baking and updating her 6-acre
farmhouse. Roche will continue using her skills
as an event nurse at the Show-Me Center and
volunteering with Girl Scouts.
Best wishes on your retirement, Pam! Thank
you for your dedication to Saint Francis.
LICHTENEGGER RETIRES AFTER 36 YEARS AT SAINT FRANCIS
Gail Lichtenegger, Utilization Review Clinician,
will retire after 36 years of dedication to Saint
Francis Healthcare System.
Lichtenegger joined the Saint Francis Family in
1980 as nurse in the Medical Oncology unit. She
has since worked in the gastrointestinal lab and
in IV therapy, and has been a nurse in Utilization
Review for the past 16 years. “I enjoy my job
because of the variety of things I get to do
every day and in all of the ways I get to apply
my nursing skills,” says Lichtenegger.
After retiring, she is excited to spend more
time with her husband, and will stay busy by
pursuing another nursing job.
Thank you for your service, Gail, and the Saint
Francis Family wishes you the best!
ELFRINK RETIRES AFTER 33+ YEARS AT SAINT FRANCIS
Judy Elfrink, Chaplain in Pastoral Care, will
retire after 33 ½ years of service at Saint Francis
Healthcare System.
Elfrink began her job in January 1983 as a
chaplain and has remained a beloved part of the
Pastoral Care team since. Working with Saint
Francis patients and their families has kept her
here so long, and she has made many friends.
Elfrink says, “I will miss the staff so much
because they have become like family to me.”
In the next chapter of her life, she will spend
more time with her friends and family and
continue to serve the Lord in whichever ways
He plans for her.
Thank you for your commitment to Saint
Francis, Judy, and we wish you a happy and
healthy retirement!
To be included, please send your recent recognition certification,
professional development or other career advancement news to

VOLUNTEER VOICESThis year’s Auxiliary and Volunteer Luncheon was held April 13, where
Steven C. Bjelich, FACHE-D, President and Chief Executive Officer,
recapped the many changes that have occurred within Saint Francis during
the past year. He added that this was the Healthcare System’s biggest
growth year to date and discussed the improvements to our electronic
medical record system, in which Saint Francis has chosen to use Epic.
We are happy to announce that Ann Beggs was recognized as our Auxilian
of the Year! She has been a part of the volunteer family for 11 years with
more than 8,500 hours logged. Ann has served as President-Elect and
President in the Auxiliary since 2010. We thank Ann for her generous and
ongoing contributions to the Medical Center, the Auxiliary, our patients and
all those we serve. The Auxiliary donated $160,000 in support of building
on excellence at this year’s luncheon.
In other news, the Junior Volunteers will be assisting again this summer
in various departments. Students earn service hours in June and July
by working a morning or afternoon shift each Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday during their four-week schedule. Students must be at least 14
years old to apply and must attend orientation.
For more information, please call Volunteer Services at ext. 5166.

WHAT IS AN EPIC DRESS REHEARSAL?
Over the coming weeks, several different
types of system testing will be taking place.
These detailed trial runs are known as dress
rehearsals. Three distinct types of dress
rehearsals will be occurring: the technical
dress rehearsal, the application dress
rehearsal and the workflow dress rehearsal.
To help avoid confusion, here are
definitions of what will take place
during each.
The technical dress rehearsal is in two
phases, technical and application. For
the technical component, Information
Systems staff will test the initial hardware
setup configuration. They will follow
a script developed by Epic. This trial
run is already underway and should be
complete six weeks prior to go-live. The
second component, the application dress
rehearsal, is conducted using a prescribed
list of activities to be performed on every
device, following a script provided by Epic.
Examples of activities include ability to
access and log in to Epic; print to a mapped
printer, label printer, scanner, etc.; and test
BCA reports and print to local printer. This
trial began in early May and will conclude in
early June.
The workflow dress rehearsal will take
place in mid-June. For this trial run, we will
use structured scripts mimicking a patient’s
chart (similar to the tracer methodology
used by The Joint Commission). Small
groups will conduct scripts, going from unit
to unit as the script dictates. The groups
will be made up of analysts, subject matter
experts and staff from the units they are
visiting. Any issues identified will be logged
into Sherlock to be resolved before go-live.
CELEBRATE, MOTIVATE, EDUCATE
To support the ongoing internal
communications efforts celebrating Saint
Francis Healthcare System’s transition to
Epic, in-depth video interviews have been
produced with members of the Executive
Team and physicians discussing what they
are most looking forward to with the new
electronic medical record. The videos
are playing in the media centers outside
the Chapel and Tuscan Sun Restaurant.
Countdown posters are displayed in
employee areas reminding everyone of
the time left before go-live on July 1. The
campaign’s theme is “This is going to be
EPIC,” which generates enthusiasm and
speaks to the magnitude of the changes
taking place.
The campaign’s goal is to celebrate Epic,
motivate the Saint Francis Family and
educate everyone involved. As part of this
goal, an Epic Helpline has been established
for questions. Call or text 573-919-0411 for
fast, reliable answers from the experts.
WHAT DO OTHERS SAY?
Epic is touted as the industry’s gold
standard of EMRs, but why? Here’s what
other providers have said:
“Epic promotes collaboration among physicians by
allowing them to connect easily with one another —
an advantage in caring for patients and managing
workflow. Its robust messaging system allows
asynchronous communication and immediate access
to information that avoids the hassles and delays
of the past. Epic also allows providers to identify
specialists quickly, even down to expertise in a
particular area.”
Christian M. Pettker, MD
Chief of Obstetrics
Yale School of Medicine
“The system will allow physicians to review and
edit their charts virtually anywhere. The days of
searching for scraps of paper, or patient prescription
information will be ended, notes the physician
leaders who have worked to make sure that the
transfer to a paperless medical record will happen
successfully. Now it is time for ‘no physician to be
left behind.’”

HEALTHY REWARDS ENROLLMENT CHANGES
Due to the annual evaluations date change, effective July 1, Healthy Rewards annual

badge) just like your Employee Health Nurse visit – so that all required labs for Healthy
Rewards and Employee Health may be drawn at the same time.
For most employees, there will be no change to your enrollment schedule. For those who
will be changing enrollment dates, Healthy Rewards staff will discuss any changes at your
next personal Wellness meeting. No Healthy Rewards participant will be penalized due to
these changes.
POWER OF ONELast summer, Genger, a Saint Francis Family member,
received terrible news for her family. Genger’s husband
had been injured at work and let go, leaving her family of
six with insufficient income. Unsure of what to do, Genger
reached out to Saint Francis Foundation, who informed
her of the Caring Fund.
Because of this opportunity for Saint Francis Families,
Genger’s family of six was able to keep up with their bills.
“Saint Francis helped our family so much in this time of
need,” says Genger. “We were able to keep the lights on
and our vehicles running, as well as supply food for our
four children.”
Although their insurance company denied Genger’s
husband surgery, Saint Francis was able to provide the
surgery he needed through the Patient Assistance Fund.
Now, the family is able to start getting back on their feet
after this discouraging setback.
This year, Team One and the Power of Sharing have
become the Power of One! This new employee-funded
campaign will have a huge impact on patients and their
families, our own Saint Francis Family and the community
by providing care, compassion and support in times of
need.
Donations benefit three internal funds:
• Cancer Care Fund
• Caring Fund
• Sister Esther Emergency Fund
And two external funds:
• Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri
• The United Way
These programs help prevent homelessness, assist
military veterans find homes, provide services for
individuals with developmental disabilities, assist at-risk
pregnant women, repair the homes of vulnerable families
and the elderly, assist individuals affected by natural
disaster and many others.
The total raised so far is $136,000. We are more than halfway to our goal of $250,000, but we still need employees to step up and help.
For more information, call ext. 5133. Visit www.foundation.sfmc.net/PowerOfOne to learn more and
make an online donation.
EVALUATION PROCESS CHANGE EFFECTIVE JULY 1
Effective July 1, 2016, Saint Francis Healthcare System will move from our current
anniversary date performance evaluation process to a focal evaluation process.
A focal evaluation helps align individual performances with the organization’s strategic
plan. Department goals will be established prior to evaluation so each person within the
department can be evaluated on the same goals. Since each employee’s performance is
being evaluated at the same time, managers can easily compare employees’ performance
and provide ratings and feedback that are fair and consistent.
Evaluations will be prorated based on the last review date in order to transition all employees
to the focal evaluation process.
Evaluations will be available for managers to complete beginning August 1, 2016. Managers
will have until October 31, 2016, to complete employee evaluations, including employee sign-
off process. Human Resources will process the evaluations during the month of November.
Employees’ new annual review date will be December 1 each year. Employees’ merit increase
or top-of-scale bonus will be reflected in the first pay period in December
(for this year, December 15).

SAINT FRANCIS HEALTHCARE SYSTEM It is not enough just to wish well; we must also do well.
SAINT AMBROSE
BABY & ME: TOBACCO FREE
Saint Francis Healthcare System is one of six
healthcare facilities chosen to participate in an
evidence-based smoking-cessation initiative. “Baby
& Me: Tobacco Free” is sponsored by the March of
Dimes and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in
Missouri. It is an incentive-based program to help
pregnant women quit smoking before, during and
after pregnancy.
Smoking during pregnancy causes major
complications, such as premature births, and the goal
of this program is to see those rates decline. Baby &
Me: Tobacco Free will provide $25 in monthly diaper
vouchers to female smokers who quit smoking prior
to delivery and stay smoke-free for up to one year
postpartum. Similar initiatives in other states have
seen as much as 60 percent of women enrolled in the
program successfully quit smoking.
For more information, call Tracy Carr, Certified Nurse
Midwife, at ext. 5470.
POWERLINEEMERGING LEADERS GRADUATION
On May 4, the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP)
offered through Training and Development
presented 33 Saint Francis Family members with ELP
graduation certificates.
“Yes, [ELP] is a lot of work,” says Nick Unverferth,
BS, CNMT, MBA, Nuclear Medicine Technician as he
addressed his fellow ELP classmates. “But, we have
gained a lot of knowledge in such a short amount
of time.”
“I learned so much from ELP,” says Christy Farrow,
Rehabilitation External Admission Liaison. “Not
just from the topics discussed but from each of my
class members.”
During the ceremony, the class was addressed by
Jeannie Fadler, Vice President – Patient Care Services;
Gerry Salter, Vice President of Professional Services;
Jason Banderman, Director of Ambulatory Services;
and Maryann Reese, RN, MHA, DHA, FACHE, Executive
Vice President/Chief Operating Officer. Each leader
expressed the importance of the tools that they had
learned through their own journey of leadership,
imparting a piece of the knowledge they have gained
through their roles.
“As a leader you are always on stage,” says Reese.
“Everything you say, they will take seriously so be
honest with people. Every time someone gives you an
opportunity, say yes!”
ELP is designed for individual contributors who are
considering the transition into a leadership role with
Saint Francis Healthcare System. The content of
the class is oriented toward preparing the potential
leader for the challenges of leadership before they
are considered and promoted into management. Each
participant for ELP is selected by his or her manager
or director.
