What It Means To Be An RCS AthleteThe Lion Chaser Manifesto

Quit living as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death. Run to the roar.

Set God-sized goals. Pursue God-given passions.Go after a dream that is destined to fail

without divine intervention.Stop pointing out problems. Become part of the solution.

Stop repeating the past. Start creating the future.Face your fears. Fight for your dreams.

Grab opportunity by the mane and don’t let go!Live like today is the first day and last day of your life.

Burn sinful bridges. Blaze new trails.Live for the applause of nail-scarred hands.

Don’t let what’s wrong with youkeep you from worshiping what’s right with God.

Dare to fail. Dare to be different.Quit holding out. Quit holding back. Quit running away.

Chase the lion.

Honoring God – I Cor. 10:31 instructs the believer to do all things for the glory of God. Athletics provides a valuable avenue for honoring the Lord through attitude, preparation, conflict resolution, perseverance and success. The primary goal for the Christian student-athlete is a simple one, honoring the Lord.   Sharpening Peers – Proverbs 27:17 encourages believers to help sharpen each other. Being on a team is a valuable learning experience for student-athletes and provides numerous opportunities for growth both athletically and spiritually.   Learning Life Lessons – Sports is a microcosm for life and mirrors many of the difficulties and successes that one will encounter. Mentoring and representing Christ as student-athletes work through issues is a fantastic opportunity for the Athletic Department.   Enhancing the High School Experience – The high school experience should be a special time in the life of a student-athlete. It is the goal of the Athletic Department to help the student-athletes feel encouraged and valued and to help their experience be a special one. Attend all practices, be there early, be ready-to-go and compete for God’s glory. Communicate with coach if you can’t make it or will be late. DO NOT communicate this type of information to your teammates or to myself but only to your coach. Contests: attend all contests including those over the Holidays. During the sports season your holidays are “booked”. Fundraising: Help with any fundraisers your team is involved in. Self-Preparation: Part of being an athlete means preparing ON YOUR OWN. Preparation means doing intense training outside of practice.

Parent Expectations• Let the coaches coach• Officials

– We are to be examples of the fruits of the Spirit (gentleness, patience, long-suffering, self-control…)

– Remember that we will have the same officials for many games and potentially many years, we want to develop a good relationship with them

• All the student-athletes are someone’s child

Parents play a critical role in the overall success of their young person’s involvement in athletics. It is important that all parents realize the importance of their role in this area of their student’s life.   SUPPORT AND COOPERATION Be supportive and objective. While there are many situations that will arise where parents do not fully agree with a coach’s decisions they need to place trust in the authority God has allowed to be in place (Hebrews 13:17). Be flexible whenever possible. As careful planning is done, changes in times and schedules sometimes need to be made. Represent RCS and most importantly the body of Christ well and strive to stay above reproach and be imitators of Christ (Ephesians 5:1).

Conflict Resolution• Allow 24 hours after the situation to address the coach• keep it private• 45% of parental complaints are due to playing time.

95% of the time, the answer to playing time issues are “work harder and remove all doubt”.

• 45% of parental complaints are due to “lack of communication” this is the athlete’s responsibility first of all, secondly refer to the website for schedules, and thirdly ask coaches other questions regarding practices, etc.

Page 7: PowerPoint Presentation - Amazon S3 › pubtemp › live › content › Rainier...First Day of Practice: Monday, August 21 th for HS – Monday, Sept. 11 th for Middle School –

Conflict Resolution• Matthew 18:15-17:

– “If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.”

• Go directly to that person.• Go to that person with one other person (involve A.D.).• Take the issue to the church (school leadership; Principal).• Disassociate with that person (more aggressive action).
