How PowerPoint Is Like Other Microsoft Products You must highlight text to change its type,

size, and color. Spell check and grammar check work the

same way. It’s like Front Page in that you must choose

FORMAT, BACKGROUND to change the background of a slide.

Page 3: PowerPoint Workshop Presented by Delores Woodhurst

OpeningScreen

I usually choose blank presentation. If you are opening a presentation, choose that, and then

locate your file, probably on 3 1/2 Floppy A: or My Documents.

Page 4: PowerPoint Workshop Presented by Delores Woodhurst

NewSlide

Your next choice is what slide to begin with. The default is the title slide, and I usually

choose it. You can see the name of each slide by clicking

on a sample slide and reading its description in the lower right-hand corner of the dialogue box.

Common Tasks Toolbar(Section A)

This is an absolute necessity.

If you don’t see it, click VIEW, TOOLBARS, COMMON TASKS.

The Common Tasks Toolbar has three buttons: New Slide, Slide Layout, and Apply Design

Page 6: PowerPoint Workshop Presented by Delores Woodhurst

New Slide

Just like the name says, choose this to create a new slide.

You’ll have many choices for possible slides.

Remember, the man with the funny nose is the symbol for clip-art.

Page 7: PowerPoint Workshop Presented by Delores Woodhurst

Slide Layout

Okay, image you’ve selected a slide without clipart, and now you want to add clipart. This is your button.

By clicking on SLIDE LAYOUT you can change the layout of the selected slide.

Page 8: PowerPoint Workshop Presented by Delores Woodhurst

Apply Design

If you would like to add a packaged design to your presentation, this is your button.

There are many choices, and they will set up your background and font color.

This is a definite time saver, and some of the choices are pretty awesome.

This presentation is the Notebook Design.

The Important Buttons At The BottomSection B

At the bottom, left-hand side of your screen, there are 5 very important PowerPoint buttons.

Use these buttons to view your slide show in a variety of ways.

Page 10: PowerPoint Workshop Presented by Delores Woodhurst

Slide View

The first button, slide view, is the default. This allows you to see each slide one by

one, and they almost take up the entire screen.

Page 11: PowerPoint Workshop Presented by Delores Woodhurst

Outline View

This button shows the entire slide show as an outline.

This is a great tool with older kids who are having trouble visualizing outlines.

Page 12: PowerPoint Workshop Presented by Delores Woodhurst

Slide Sorter View

My name for this tool is the box with four boxes.

This shows all of your slides on one screen. You can select slides in this mode and add

transitions, effects, etc. Also, when you are in slide sorter view, you

can click and drag slides to get them in the correct order for your presentation.

Page 13: PowerPoint Workshop Presented by Delores Woodhurst

Note Page View

If you are making a presentation, and want to make personal notes to yourself, this is your mode.

Your slide is at the top, and you can insert notes in the box below it.

Page 14: PowerPoint Workshop Presented by Delores Woodhurst

slide is selected. Before using this button, go to the Slide

Sorter View (box with four boxes) and click on the first slide.

Apply, or Apply To All? That is the question! Apply will apply the

background only to the slide you have selected.

Apply to all will apply the background to all slides previously created, and all slides yet to be created.

Adding Transitions

Transitions are what occur as slides move from one to another.

My favorite way to do this is to move to slide sorter view (box with four boxes).

When you click on a slide, the toolbar directly above the slide are says “No Transition.”

Click the down arrow and choose a transition.

Page 22: PowerPoint Workshop Presented by Delores Woodhurst

Adding Effects

Effects are the entrance that each individual part of your slide show makes as it appears on your slide.

Go to slide sorter view (box with four boxes), and you’ll see no transition at the top.

Choose the transition you would like.

Page 23: PowerPoint Workshop Presented by Delores Woodhurst

Notes About Transitions and Effects

Avoid “FLASH ONCE.” It literally does that, and unless you have your show memorized, you’re in trouble.

Experiment, experiment, experiment!

Some transitions and effects are too slow, and some are too fast!
