Webex Assembly - The New Style of Assembly

From the Principal… Welcome to Week 6 of the term, I hope you managed to have a great long weekend and you got out and enjoyed the beautiful weather.

Congratulations to our student Leadership Team who organised a great WebEx assembly yesterday. In order to increase the entertainment value, I challenged them to come up with a theme and they all looked wonderful in their mythical creatures’ outfits. Congratulations also to all the award recipients.

The COVID-19 Study will commence soon, Mrs Cross sent information out on Friday to you, so that if

you decided that you wanted your child to participate you could complete the consent form. This

process will not take you longer than five minutes. This is a personal decision for you and as always you are the only

person that can make it. Consent forms for student participation need to be completed by 11:59pm Friday 5 June.

I will be sending out some instructions as to how the State Government’s Phase 3 Roadmap will apply here at Poynter

PS. There are still some restrictions that apply to schools that we need to maintain.

OPERATIONAL MATTERS

School Board- General Meeting

The Annual General Board meeting will be held on Monday 15 June, starting at 6:00pm in the staffroom. Board

meetings are always open to our school community.

Annual Report 2019

Thank you to the School Board for going through our Annual Report 2019 and giving us feedback. The Annual Report

was not a requirement as part of the reporting requirements for schools this year due to COVID-19; however, most of it

was done before the crisis hit last term. Thank you to all my staff who contributed to the report and a special mention to

Ms Linda Liebe for her graphic design and compilation of the report. I will place it on Connect and upload it to Schools

Online.

Early Arrivals

Just a reminder that now that winter has arrived, please do not send children to school too early. As classrooms are not

opened until 8:30am, students are required to sit in front of the school and it can be very cold at times. There are some

children arriving very early without parents alerting administration, which means that students are alone at school. If for

any reason your circumstances change and your child needs to be at school earlier that 8:00am, please let Admin

know.

School Uniform

As winter kicks in please be aware that students are required to wear the correct uniform to school. Our School Dress

Code 2020 policy is available on our school website but, as a reminder, school dresses are not to be worn in Terms 2

and 3, school jackets are the only acceptable jackets to wear and if students wear skorts, they may only wear maroon

tights, not blue. Please refer to the policy for further detail. Thank you in anticipation of your support.

Enrolments for 2021

A reminder that 2021 enrolments for Kindy and Pre-Primary (and Years 1-6) close on Friday 24 July 2020.

Please remind friends and neighbours with eligible children of these dates.

Have a good three weeks :-)

LIBRARY NEWS

Poynter Primary School participated in the National Simultaneous Story Time with this year’s fun book ‘Chicken Divas’. Some of the classes decided to read along with an Auslan (Australian Sign Language) interpreter which allowed the children to be aware of how there are different ways to communicate.

This fortnight’s book review winners are Anais T Room 15 and Audrey R Room 3

I am excited to have five eager library monitors this year. They are Myla F, Audrey H, Robyn J, Susana R and Elise M.

Christine Perrett Library Officer

Dear Parents We are halfway through Term 2 of this extraordinary year and things are slowly returning to the format that is usual for the Music Program at Poynter. Congratulations to the students who have so flexibly adjusted to the different ways that we are needing to do things in the interim. I am particularly appreciative of the efforts of the senior students in ensuring that we are set up in the Undercover Area for our choir rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. There is a great team of students across both year groups who are willing and efficient and do it all with good grace and enthusiasm. My thanks also to Mr Palmer who always ensures that we have AV operating and available for these rehearsals. I would also like to publicly acknowledge the efforts of my Music Captains Sophie H and Luca DB for the exceptional way in which they have gone about their leadership role in a challenging and different school environment. Our choirs and ensembles are continuing with their rehearsals even though many of the performance events that we would usually participate in have been cancelled for this year. We are working on repertoire towards some other performance opportunities that I hope will eventuate. The circumstances of the pandemic have closed some doors but have enabled new opportunities to arise! All students across the Years 3-6 are embarking on composition projects this term based on art works which have in turn informed by music from the Romantic Era. The Year 5/6s have been listening to the ‘Moldau” by Bedrich Smetana which portrays the journey of the river Vltava (Moldau) through Bohemia and the different scenes it passes by on its journey to Prague before it joins with another river and heads to the sea. The Year 3/4s have been exploring the music of Grieg in the suite ‘Peer Gynt’ which is based on the Norwegian tale of a young man of the same name written by Henrik Ibsen. It is a lengthy and Scandinavian version of a fairy tale complete with trolls, princesses, adventures, fortunes and plenty of interesting twists and turns in the narrative. The music is some of the best known written by Grieg. The Year 1/2s are listening to the music by Saint-Saens ‘Carnival of the Animals’ which is a suite of short musical pieces, each depicting a particular animal. We have also been exploring the original poems written by Ogden Nash to accompany each piece of Music as well as a new set of poems written by Petrushkey with beautiful illustrations. All these beautiful music pieces are very accessible and I will be creating links on Connect to listen to them. Please take the time to listen to the music with your children and look out for concerts in the future which features this music. All these pieces of Music provide the opportunity to explore the elements of music in connection with composition and the students are building their skills and knowledge base to enable them to create their own music. I am looking forward to hearing the music that they will be creating in response to this project.
