It is one of the largest research institute in Russia. It is multi-profiles institute studied sciences connected with problems of the World Ocean and seas. There are three branches: in Sant-Peterburg's branch (Sant-Peterburg), Atlantic branch (Kaliningrad) and Southern branch (Gelendzhik).

SUMMARY REFERENCE
Analyzes of interannual and climatic variability of the hydrophysical, hydrochemical and biological parameters and processes in ecosystems of the Black, Azov, Caspian Seas to predict their state. Project is implemented within the framework subprogram 'The Natural resources of the World Ocean' of the program 'The World Ocean' Monitoring of complex investigations was conducted in Russian areas of the Black, whole Azov and whole Caspian Sea (without Iranian area).Comparative analyzes of hydrophysical, hydrochemical and biological parameters was performed for four years surveys data. Seasonal and interannual variability were assessed and prediction of development of ecosystems under climatic and anthropogenic effect was made.
Russian National Research Program“The World Ocean”“The World Ocean”
subprogram “Investigations of Natural resources Investigations of Natural resources
of the World Ocean ”of the World Ocean ” leg-1 (1999-2002)Ministry of Science and Technology Policy of the Russian Federation.
• The goals of the program:The goals of the program:Investigation of the role of the ocean
and polar areas in forming weather anomalies for short and long-term weather forecasts and measuring possible climatic alterations on the Earth;
Determining biological productive capability of oceans and seas to estimate
steady amounts of removing the commercial objects and to predict change in their stocks
Assessment and forecast of changes in environmental situation in the seas of Russia
on the basis of comprehensive oceanographic research, working out
guidelines and prediction of socioeconomic development of maritime regions in the
country based on methodology of integrated coastal zone management;
Setting up efficient systems of monitoring the marine and polar processes, revealing pattern characteristics of the Arctic and
parameters of their variability.
The main system of projects :• 1. Diagnose and prediction of climate of
the World Ocean(6 projects).2. Dynamic of ecosystem, biodiversity and commercial productivity, biogeochemical cycles and problems of pollution (8 projects).3. Investigation into composition and structure of the earth’s crust and the upper mantle beneath oceans and seas, estimation of mineral resources(11 projects).
Regional projects.
1. Comprehensive investigations and monitor of Far East Seas of Russia(16 projects).
2. Comprehensive investigations and monitor of Arctic Seas of Russia(18 projects).
3. Comprehensive investigations and monitor of the Black , Azov and Caspian Seas
(13 projects).4 . Comprehensive investigations and monitor
of the Baltic Sea (5 projects).
5. Development of the technical base and methods of scientific investigations. Development of new instruments of
observations (2 projects).
