Disruptive Media Learning Lab launches BEACONING project

The Disruptive Media Learning Lab (DMLL),Coventry University is leading the three-yearBEACONING project (15partners,€5.9million),co-fundedbytheEUHorizon2020researchandinnovation programmeunder grant agreementNo687676.
BEACONING stands for Breaking EducationalBarriers with Contextualised, Pervasive andGameful Learning and will focus on ‘anytimeanywhere’ learning by exploiting pervasive,context-aware and gamified techniques andtechnologies, framedunder theProblem-BasedLearningapproach.
Inconjunctionwith15leadingpartnerswhoeachbring in their own expertise and technologies,both in games and education, theproject seeksto pilot innovation in a real operationalenvironment, aligning with DMLL’s ethos indisruptive media and the impact on changingmind-setsandcreatingnewmodelsandpracticesofteachingandlearning.

15PARTNERSThe BEACONING platform will be a ubiquitoussolution that exploits advances in userexperience design, mobile communication,location - based and context aware systems,proceduralcontentgeneration,pedagogy-drivengamification, learning analytics and cloudtechnology through innovative integrationtowardsablendedlearningspace. BEACONINGPLATFORMBEACONING sets a forefront in multifaceted
education technologies through large-scalepiloting of a digital learning platform thatblends physical and digital spaces. It willcombineopportunities fornewICTs inmultipleways that merge learning acquired in formal,non-formalandinformalmeans,developingtheskills for today’s abled and disabled learnersandworkforce.
BEACONINGCONCEPT
Large-scale pilots will validate and inform thedevelopmentoftheBEACONINGecosystemthatdemocratises learning across and among fullyabledand thosewithmild tomoderatephysicaland mental impairments (age 15 to 24),undergoinggeneralandvocationaltraining.
Dr.SylvesterArnab,ReaderinGamesScience,thecoordinatoroftheBEACONINGprojectsaid:“The BEACONING project will exploit relevant techniques and technologies and innovate the way learning isfacilitated. By using a gamified approach, we aim to inject the power of play that will encapsulate formal,informal, non-formal and social learning experiences within a contextualised narrative. This opens upopportunitiesforustoredefineandreconstructlearninginahybridlearningspace.”
