Whatever . . . from Fr. Robert

THE FAMILY FULLY ALIVE Gospel Reading November 11, 2018 Mark 12:38-44

In the course of his teaching Jesus said to the crowds, "Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation."

He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood."

Reflecting on the Word In last week’s gospel Jesus gave credit to one of the scribes for his understanding of the commandments; this week he points out others as ‘show-offs.’ These scribes loved the attention and power their position gave them. They liked to feel important - above the Jewish people who needed the law interpreted for them. Don’t be like that, Jesus tells his followers. The leaders should be taking care of the widows and orphans, instead, from their greed, it appears they still expect a tithe from the them. Jesus then watches as a poor widow puts her coins into the treasury. It’s just a small amount - but a sacrificial amount. It is this generous woman who impresses Jesus.

On the way home from Mass How can the few cents of the widow be worth more than the large sums of the rich?

Living the Word There were no insurance policies in Jesus’ time. No government program to aid a woman who lost her husband and source of livelihood, or to care for children left alone. Even in our day and age, some people go without a safe place to live or enough to eat. Can your family think of some sacrifice to make that would help someone else?

Fr. Robert gave up his bulletin article space for me this week. So, I will try to make reading this week’s article worth your while. In our Gospel this week Jesus tells us to beware. He’s right. We should beware of a lot of things. At the same time we should be aware of a lot of things as well. St. Ignatius of Loyola, one of the greatest spiritual masters, used three maxims to guide him in living a discerning life: 1) be aware of what is stirring up within us, 2) understand where these movements of the heart are coming from, and 3) take action by either accepting them or rejecting them. To beware implies impending danger. We can, however, avoid spiritual danger altogether by becoming more aware of our own interior movements; our thoughts, feelings, and desires.

The scribes in today’s Gospel were motivated primarily by their own status, their reputation, and their prestige within the community. In contrast, the poor widow was motivated primarily out of love for the Lord. She gave all she had because she was aware of whom she was before God – someone in need and totally dependent on God. Jesus says that she gave from her poverty.

Bishop Boyea has called for a year of prayer. While I cannot give a detailed lesson on prayer in a simple bulletin article I want to give you an acronym to help guide your personal prayer, to help you become more aware of what is going on in the depths of your hearts, and to make your prayer more relational – A.R.R.R. (please don’t start with the cheesy pirate jokes…).

Acknowledge: acknowledge your thoughts, feelings, and desires before God.

Relate: tell the Father all about them as he longs to know you intimately just as you are right now (not yesterday and not tomorrow).

Receive: acknowledging and relating what we find in our hearts to the Father puts us in a disposition to receive so much grace from Him. What is He trying to give you in this time of prayer? Keep in mind that receptivity is 99% of our relationship with God. Our very existence is a gift from the Father.

Respond: When we receive from God we are invited to respond to Him. Our response is inspired from what we have received. Will we respond to God like the poor widow or like the pious scribes?

Be Loved and Stay Awesome! -Fr. Ryan Riley

After learning about the two Great

Commandments in RCIA (to love God and to

love our neighbor), the group has decided to take

Christ's words and put them into action. Our plan

of action is , collecting non-perishable food items

for two weeks and then donate them to St.

Vincent de Paul for Thanksgiving sharing.

Barbara Norris led our class discussion last

week , our topic was Mary and the Saints. I

would like to share some of the highlights of our

discussion.

Mary is our new Eve. Her "Yes" to God was in

opposition to Eve's "No" (disobedience.)

Mary was born without Original Sin and

remained free from sin throughout her life. We

celebrate this, on December 8th, the Feast of the

Immaculate Conception. (Pope Pius IX declared

in 1854)

Catholics do not

worship Mary,

we venerate

her. Mary leads

us to her Son,

Jesus.

Mary's Faith

Statement, "Do

whatever he tells

you." John 2:5

Jesus gave us

His Mother Mary just before He died. "Behold

your mother." John 19: 27

Mary was assumed into heaven and we celebrate

this Feast Day on August 15th.

As we continue to study the lives of the saints ,

hopefully we will learn from them, and ask them

to intercede for us as we all make our journey to

the Father.

Peace & Joy,

Sandy Shaker

BIBLE EXPLORATIONS in Fourth Grade

Children are often presented with the story of Noah’s Ark,

probably because it features animals, and the vision of an array of

animals, birds and such, in sets of two offers enticement to just

about any artist. But, the story of Noah’s Ark is not intended to

be just charming. While there seems to be historical truth in the

idea of a great, universal flood, the details which are presented in

Genesis don’t necessarily make sense. But that does not matter

because the point of the story is in its many layers of meaning.

As Joe Paprocki writes, “Something can be true without being

factual.” Because of children’s familiarity with the story, and the

fact that many fourth graders are beginning to wonder how it

could be literally “true” in every detail - it is a great story to use

to help children understand that the greatest value of the Bible is

not as a history or science book, but in the truth it communicates

to us now.

And for that, we look at the ark as a symbol. God tells Noah to

make a Tebah, a word meaning chest, box, or container. (Our

fifth graders just learned that the “basket” baby Moses was

discovered in was also called a Tebah.) In any case, the Ark

represents the Church (a place to go to be saved). As we see God

washing away the world’s sinfulness with the waters of the

flood, we can see an image of Baptism. That one door of the Ark,

is an image of the “one Way” to God - Jesus (John 10:9). The

one, main entrance we see in many churches (including our own),

leading directly to the Tabernacle, communicates this same idea.

Those animals? They remind us that God provides everything we

need. The little art project helped underline some of these ideas.

The glorious Mystery of the Scriptures is how it communicates

truth on so many levels at once. Obviously, we don’t explore all

of these in fourth grade.

But the flood, the forty

days and nights, the

washing away of sin – all

relate to the transformation

each of us must undergo as

we strive for holiness.

And where can we turn?

To Jesus and His Church.

Need a Heart

I wrote earlier of a Mother whose son came home for Christmas feeling worn out. He became very sick and his organs

began to shut down. Later his heart failed and he needed assistance from a fancy pump made to circulate his blood. His mother

quit working to care for her adult son. After using up all of her savings she was forced to leave her son home as she went back

to work. They were about to have their power shut off, and lose the home they rented when our Outreach family stepped in.

We paid her utility bill and kept the power on. One very special donor contacted me and by herself gave a $1000.00 as a

onetime gift and caught this family back up on their rent. This mother cried with joy as she was told everything was caught up.

This mother and her very sick son will stay in their home with all of the special accommodations for her son.

You might believe the owner of the home was a heartless person. You would be wrong. He has installed extra wall plugs to

allow this young man to plug in all of the medical equipment that’s needed to keep himself alive. He has turned his house into

a hospital room for this family. He has tried to be as flexible as he could with rent. He is a good man and I pray the Lord

blesses him.

I would like to thank all of you for helping this family through this period of crisis. I am sure they will need help in the

future. I know St. John parishioners will be there if needed again to keep this young man alive. May Jesus bless you all for

your generosity!

The St Vincent de Paul Food Pantry at St John’s helps

to feed approximately 80 families each month. This is

made possible by the kindness and generosity of our

parishioners and members of our community. For

those unable to participate in the 3rd Saturday Food

Collection, there are also collection boxes by each door

in the gathering space. We encourage you to

contribute to this important work by bringing a canned/

boxed food item when you come to Mass. Your

neighbors need your help.

An Education in Faith

All About Mrs. Ratke I would like to take this opportunity to share a little about myself and why I am blessed to be at St. John

School. I have been teaching for twelve years and I am happy to be able to share my faith on a daily basis with my

students. Not only do I get to share my faith, but my family is all under one roof. My husband is a teacher at St.

John and our three children attend school there as well. I love that I live, work, and worship right here in Fenton.

Life in Preschool Our preschool program is a fun learning environment that gets children prepared for kindergarten. Preschool

three is getting to know each other and how school works. Preschool four is hustle and bustle with learning and

things are easier now that they know the routine. We work on letter recognition, letter sounds, and number sense.

We use centers, small groups, and shelf jobs which allow the students to have a choice within their learning. We

also make sure to focus on fine motor skills with cutting, gluing, and sorting. In preschool we have a good mix of

social interaction and academics. Students also get the opportunity to experience specials such as library, music, and

gym.

Faith in Our Classroom In preschool we always begin the morning with gathering around our prayer wall. Each month we learn

about a new saint, a new prayer, and the virtue. I believe it is important to teach at a young age how much Jesus

loves each of us and how important prayer is. I explain to the students that Jesus loves to hear our routine prayers,

but he likes to hear us talk to him just as we would a friend. Our preschool three students have been working on

their God gave us senses book. Each week we would discuss a new sense and how lucky we are to have each one. In

preschool four we have been working on the creation and created a project to help us remember each day as well as

a song that helps us.

NOVEMBER WEEKEND ROSARY

Please consider joining your fellow parishioners who pray

the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary one half hour before

the 5:00 p.m. Saturday, and the 8:30 a.m., and 11:30

a.m. Sunday masses.

During November our intention will be for our veterans

and their needs and concerns, and for the souls in

purgatory—-especially our loved ones, that the time for

them to see the face of God will be hastened. Your

personal intentions are always included.

the DOMESTIC CHURCH CCW- COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN NEWS...

The seasons are hurrying by. Last week it was Halloween, next comes Thanksgiving, Advent and Christmas. I hope we all can take some time to enjoy these special seasons. Time to share with family and friends at home and at Church. We are blessed to be able to have these opportunities to celebrate.

Please remember Mary Beth Fravel, better known to each of us as "Betsy". She was laid to rest at St. John Cemetery on October 28 . For most of her life she was involved in the many groups and ministries at St. John. She and her mom, Marcella lived across the street from the church and took an active part in CCW.

Please Note..... A Big Change for our November 14, meeting. Many of our members are out of town touring Italy and I am unable to attend and lend a hand for our craft night. Jean Carindoff is chairing this evening along with Deanna and Cheryl . They have worked and planned for this evening so we are rescheduling it for Wednesday Nov. 28 at 6:00 p.m. in the kitchen half of the Activity Center. Please remember your glue guns and scissors . A light snack will be provided. Call Shirley at 810-629-4775 to let her know you will be there.

On December 12, at 11:30 we will have a Christmas Luncheon at the Villager Restaurant at Grange Hall Rd on South Saginaw St. Next week's bulletin will have more information.

We are planning a CCW Jewelry Sale Fund Raiser for late January. See page 11 of this bulletin. Please remember to thank God for your faith and the freedom to practice it. Pray for our parish and our priests. Ask God for vocations to the priesthood. Pray for our countries leaders and the choices they have to make for us all. Don't forget those who put their lives on the line for peace and safety in our nation and the world. Many are making big sacrifices for world peace. Have a Blessed week. Sandy Tryles

Halloween is over and now the stores are filled with all things Christmas. It is really easy to get carried away with the commercialism of the holidays, and forget about the holy days of the Christmas season. I do not think that I am alone in saying that Christmas is a very stressful time for me and it is coming fast. There is always a battle within me to concentrate more on decorations, gifts, family dynamics, money, cookies, etc. than to think about what we are celebrating. This battle requires prayer and support. The Knights of Columbus is here to fight the good fight with us. Keep Christ in Christmas is a K of C program that puts our faith into action.

The first Sunday of Advent is three weeks away on December 2nd. That also marks the beginning of a new liturgical church year. May it be the beginning of a spirit-filled Advent and Christmas for the Domestic Church in our home. Let’s gather our family members and pray together to the Holy Spirit for guidance in keeping Jesus at the center of our Christmas preparations, as we not just celebrate His birth into our world but also anticipate His return!

The Advent wreath is a great way to help prepare our hearts for Jesus’ coming. If you do not already have an Advent wreath for your home, making one is easy, inexpensive and a good family activity. There are lots of websites online with step by step instructions.

The Knights of Columbus will have sets of traditional 10” taper candles available for a suggested donation of $5 at their Country Breakfast being held next Sunday, November 18. These candles will also be available for anyone the following weekend of November 24 and 25 in the gathering space.

Then there will be a blessing of all Advent candles at all the Masses that weekend of November 24 and 25. Whatever candles you plan to use in your Advent wreath at home - whether tapers, pillars, tea lights or another kind - bring them to Mass the weekend of November 24 and 25, so they can be blessed.

This column each Sunday of Advent will provide a prayer and meditation we can use when lighting the wreath each day throughout the week. Let’s pray for one another’s family and keep Christ in Christmas.
