Dear Members,

I have great pleasure in giving this edion of outhouse magazine “Prakalp”!!!!

This issue is focused on women in project management and recent mes the number is on the rise consistently.

Project management has tradionally been the preserve of the construcon and heavy engineering industries. Now, it supports projects ranging from soware development and new product launches, to business change iniaves and major sporng events.

Increasingly project management is being used across all industries to increase the organizaon’s capability by launching new products and services. Despite the progress and increasing use of project management across the globe, women are sll under-represented in project management.

The 2011 Arras People Benchmark Report esmates that the proporon of UK female project managers remains under 30%. Main reason for such low percentage is that project managers are mainly found in the construcon and engineering industry – which have been historically male dominated areas. Now, the trend is changing with women taking over responsibilies in variety industries like construcon, defense, and aviaon and so on.

Surely, the involvement of more women in project management would benefit project management professions by adding new blood and energy. The women project managers can play a very effecve and vital role in conflict resoluon with their sharp so-skills ability and excellent temperament under difficult situaons.

With best wishes,

Detail Oriented Project Manager in Oil Rig Engineering

Amrita is currently working with NPCC Engineering Pvt. Limited Mumbai, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of NPCC (Naonal Petroleum Construcon Company), Abu Dhabi. Her company is a design consultancy that specializes in designing offshore oil and gas plaorms. Through the past 8 years, NEL has gained substanal recognion in the Offshore Oil & Gas industry in India and GCC as a capable and professional engineering company to provide design & engineering services for Oil & Gas (Upstream) Industries. While the Mumbai office looks aer the detail engineering aspect of each project, the head office in Abu Dhabi carries out the fabricaon, construcon, transportaon and installaon of the plaorms.

Her designaon is Senior Project Engineer and her responsibilies include assisng the Project Engineering Manager in every aspect of carrying out the project right from the iniaon stage up unl Project Close out.

Amrita is an Electrical Engineer. Her father is an Aircra Maintenance Engineer by profession and mother is a homemaker who also holds a Master Degree. Educaon was given high importance at home. “My mother has been my constant companion and moral support during all my trials and tribulaons through academics and the inial years of my career”, says Amrita.

“My role model is Swami Vivekananda. I grew up surrounded by his philosophy and have read many of his books. He was a revoluonary, yet compassionate leader whose ideology has inspired generaon aer generaon of youth in our country.” says Amrita. “Every manager I have worked with has impacted my work principles and world view in a huge way. The moderate managers have taught me the values of sincerity and integrity. The tough managers have taught me lessons in paence. Consequently, each one of them has mentored me in their own disnct way,” declares Amrita.

Amrita found that this field is sll quite male dominated and it was somewhat inmidang to be entering such a field. “But I was lucky to have a good team and supporve managers who mentored me constantly. I had my fair share of failures too. But every experience taught me a lot. I also learnt that if we work sincerely, goodwill and support from fellow industry members (regardless of their seniority or gender) comes naturally,” claims Amrita.

On the challenges faced while working in Oil & Natural Gas sector she says “The sector is sll quite male dominated though I have seen an increase in the number of ladies taking up this field. As a woman, making a mark in a primarily male dominated industry was inmidang, but I have been very lucky to have a wonderful team, excellent mentors and supporve managers who have helped me find my foong in the industry.”

“The Engineering Director of my organizaon personally recommended me to be shied to the project department although I had joined work in the capacity of an Electrical Engineer,” is how Amrita describes her achievement. Her strengths are - Good communicaon skills, an eye for details and ability to multask proficiently. Basically, she plans and maintains To-do lists (both personal and professional) in order to get her priories right while multasking. She relaxes by listening to music and reading.

“My management style can best be described as democrac. The greatest resource my project has are the team members associated with it. Keeping them involved, making sure they can voice their opinions and concerns with ease and constantly supporng and movang my team members is essenal for the well being of my team and my project,” says Amrita.

“For achieving work-life balance, being organized both at the professional as well as personal level is a must. Planning acvies in advance and cking them off as they are completed help me stay focused. That being said I also try to keep myself flexible to abrupt

changes that happen almost every day. I also try to make me for family members and friends,” states Amrita.

“Geng a PMP cerficaon was a company requirement, but it was also something I had always hoped to do once I completed the minimum number of years of experience working on projects. I got cerfied in 2013 and it has been one of the most fruiul decisions I have made with regards to my profession. It helped me understand and appreciate the art and science of managing projects, no maer how big or small. In fact I have even started applying Project Management concepts to my day to day acvies and benefied greatly,” says Amrita.

Her advice to the young project managers of today - Work with sincerity and passion and you are bound to gain rich rewards for your efforts. Shedding light on developing leadership skills she says “The first step to developing these skills is to develop your people skills. A basic understanding of human psychology, good observaon skills and a paent temperament is also helpful. Being knowledgeable about the technical aspects of the project also helps get buy in from your team. Most importantly, in order to be a good leader, we need to know clearly our goals and movate and work with the team towards the achievement of that goal with single minded focus.”

When asked whether the appointment of cerfied Project Managers should be made compulsory in Government/Public sector projects if we want to achieve success in Vision India, she said “Yes. Appointment of cerfied, experienced and knowledgeable Project Managers is always a big advantage. Cerfied project managers would definitely be beer equipped to execute the project smoothly and ancipate changes before they become major roadblocks.

She suggests “The government can have special forums or training programs aimed at helping women recognize their potenal and become beer project managers. They can have these forums in every city and even mulple forums for larger cies. These forums can work as offshoots to the Local chapters. Senior women project managers can meet quarterly and share their experiences thus helping other women project managers learn in the process.”

How & when did you decide to become an entrepreneur and start your own company? I have always wanted to run my own business right from school. The decision to be on my own came aer a snt of 15 years in corporate life, when there was nothing novel to do or experiment with. I also wanted to bring about some real change in people's lives within the corporate world, and the best way seemed to be having one's setup with the flexibility one wants

What is OD and what are the services that you offer?Organizaon Development (OD) is a dynamic, values based field that helps organizaons and individual to build capabilies to achieve and sustain a new desired state that benefits the organizaons and communies. It is meant for system-wide change. My consulng and training offerings are focused on operaonal excellence (efficiency and effecveness), individual and team development, Agile transion and implementaon, leadership development and project management

What is your educaonal background? How did it help in your chosen career?I have a bachelor's engineering degree in computer science and engineering from College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University. I also have a PG Execuve Diploma in OD and Change from Tata Instute of Social Sciences (TISS). While my educaon in computer science exposed me to the culture of some of the top IT organizaons and helped to understand the business, my educaon in TISS has helped me understand how the people side of business works and therefore how change can be brought about.

What is your family background? Who encouraged you to build a successful career?Though my family is a conservave south Indian family, the emphasis placed on values such as hard work, humility and openness to learning helped me to build successful careers. My mother was definitely a movang force who encouraged me to venture out to a professional college, when nobody in my community would dare to do it in those days. I also had a very inspiring peer group in school and college.

Who were your mentors in your previous/current organizaons? How did they help you?I did not have a mentor in my previous organizaons, though I had one outside of the organizaon in my early days of entrepreneurship. This mentor was a very successful woman herself as an entrepreneur and she helped me by giving ideas and inspiraon to start off and also providing some important connecons that were important for the business.

Describe some of the challenges that you faced when you started your company.OD is a niche area in India and most of the business leaders are not aware of OD. Some have never heard of OD. OD is oen confused with Learning and Development and is therefore confined to the realms of HR. To address this challenge I had to take up the task of building awareness about OD on the online media and in live sessions with interested audiences.

What do you consider as your achievements or your career highlights?I would consider my greatest achievement as the decision to walk out on a plush corporate job and venture into a field which is sll not so familiar for businesses and experiment and create new ideas and soluons that make a difference to clients.

What are your strengths?Seeing the unseen, arculang the unarculated, bringing clarity, comfort in the face of uncertainty and ambiguity, excellent knowledge in OD and soware, perseverance, excellent public speaking skills.

How do you manage your me?For having a quality life, I consider it is important to understand the different priories that life brings us. For me, quality life means spending a balance me between work and family. I do this by clearly demarcang the boundaries between work and family, priorizing acvies within these boundaries and planning each day at the beginning of the day.

What do you do to relax? I love watching movies, comedy, romance and acon. I also love cycling and taking a stroll in the park nearby to unwind myself.

What style of management have you adopted?I have a strong parcipave leadership style. My focus is on building relaonships and maintaining them and I achieve the goals and tasks by this. Tasks are important, at the same me, everyone's parcipaon and involvement is more important.

How to achieve work-life balance while pursuing a demanding career as an entrepreneur?Know your priories and be clear about what you are compromising on. Delegate and outsource acvies that are not worth your me. Saying NO to things which will cluer your life and mind is much more important.

What is your advice to the young project managers/project leaders who want to turn entrepreneurs?Get clarity on why you want to become an entrepreneur, because this journey is not easy. Be ready to fall down and get up as many mes as it is required. Learn on the job as much as you can. Choose your business partners wisely.

Do you think that appointment of cerfied Project Managers should be made compulsory in Government/Public sector projects if we want to achieve success in Vision India?I do not believe it is necessary. Professionals with commitment and openness to learning should be the most essenal criteria. Do you think Government and Industry should have special programs to encourage women to enter and excel in project management? Can you give some suggesons for implemenng this?I think it will help to encourage women in this profession. Recognize women who have achieved in this, do a special mentorship program for them. Any suggesons for PMI? What should they do to encourage women to enter and excel in project management?Make sure you bring at least one woman speaker in the chapter meets and ensure equal number of women speakers in the naonal and regional seminars. Encourage them to take up roles in board and other administrave posions.

Proficient in all five areas (5Ps)- Imran Vohra (Student of Ahmedabad Branch)I am happy to let you know that I have earned PMP cerficaon day before yesterday. The icing on cake was geng 5Ps. I would like to thank all the facules for their excellent training and support and even aer training. I am really thankful to PMI Mumbai Chapter for arranging training in Ahmedabad. It was really nice experience to get trained by PMI Mumbai Chapter.

How & when did you decide to become an entrepreneur and start your own company?I was working in investment bank as senior project manager. I needed flexibility being a mother of two kids and wife. My job consumed most of my me as it was full me job. I wanted flexibility and an income as well. In fullme job there was no flexibility and no opon to work from home. That's when I decided to build my own company. It was 3 years back in Feb 2014.

What are the services that you offer? We offer soware consulng in project management using scrum/agile and soware development services for enterprise clients. We have experience with tools like Atlassian – JIRA and Confluence. We have delivered services to 50 customers.

We have experience in enterprise soware development and tesng. We are developing soluons for EU clients mainly. We offer services in business analysis and soware tesng domain as well.

What is your educaonal background? How did it help in your chosen career?By educaon I am computer engineer and I completed my course from VJTI Mumbai. It opened doors for big corporate and investment banks. I got to work with Indian MNCs like Cognizant as well. I worked for Lehman Brothers and BNPParibas.

What is your family background? Who encouraged you to build a successful career? My father was in service and my husband is a businessman. My parents encouraged me to study and my husband encouraged me to build my own business. I was a scholar in my childhood and college days. I loved studies and decided to become computer engineer when I was in 9th standard. I got good guidance from my friends and encouragement from my family. I always thought there is way to achieve our dreams. It's a queson of how we find the path. I made choices in life which worked for me. I was always clear about what I wanted.

Who were your mentors in your previous/current organizaons? How did they help you?My bosses in Lehman Brothers and BNPParibas were my mentors. I learned project management skills and people management skills from them. They guided me well and gave freedom to perform my dues. They also trusted me so much that I never broke their trust. I always asked for challenging work and met the targets with absolute enthusiasm and focus. I didn't consider work as a burden rather an opportunity to learn new things.

Describe some of the challenges that you faced when you started your company.I am sll building my business so I am sll overcoming challenges.

Here are few of them - Ÿ Geng business was and is the biggest challenge. Ÿ Finding the right talent for my company who believes in my idea and passionŸ Finding a balance of resources and work which is coming in

What do you consider as your achievements or your career highlights? We got big project from EU client which will go on for 3 years. We have completed projects for close to 50 clients across the globe. We have delivered projects for clients from 15 different countries.

What are your strengths? My strengths are

Ÿ Clarity of thoughtsŸ Follow my heartŸ I am a courageous personŸ I believe in doing than talkingŸ Family and friends are my biggest strengthsŸ I am very honest, reliable and I will make sure I keep the promises I made to myself and others.Ÿ I am happy when we achieve a milestone but I always keep next orbit challenge, so that we can achieve those.

How do you manage your me?I believe in delegaon and empowering people to do the work. When one wants to expand and grow he/she has to have a support system. We need to build trust with the people who work with us. We need to give them power to execute the tasks and allow them to make mistakes. I suggest we should develop atude of inspect and adapt. I do believe in excellence than perfecon. Excellence has no boundaries and we can always set new boundaries.

What style of management have you adopted?Inially when I hire people I work closely with them for 2-3 months. I adapt myself to their style of working. I make sure they clearly understand what I need. I keep communicaon lines open. I put in lot of trust and me in the inial phases and that pays off. I would expect people to share their issues and challenges honestly as it helps us as an organizaon.

Once I am confident I start delegaon process. I make sure delegaon process is effecve and I empower my team members to take decisions.

How to achieve work-life balance while pursuing a demanding career as an entrepreneur?I think one has set the priories clearly. We can't do everything and we need help. We need help in supporng family and running business. Learn to develop good people skills. Create a pool of people who can support you and then life is much easier. If you want to do everything then you are stuck. Rather ask for help and streamline your professional and personal life.

What is your advice to the young project managers/project leaders who want to turn entrepreneurs?Follow your heart. Ask yourself what you really want. Take calculated risks. Make sure your family is always taken care of. This is a building block if you want to create an organizaon. Please remember if you can't have a happy family you can never build your dreams.

Do you think Government and Industry should have special programs to encourage women to enter and excel in project management? Can you give some suggesons for implemenng this?I think women in general should get help in terms of woman friendly work policies, flexibility in terms of work from home. They should also get mentors, cheaper loans when they start business. There should be conscious efforts to retain women talent in the organizaons. The doors should be open to women if they want to return to work aer maternity leave and long career breaks.

Any suggesons for women who want to enter and excel in project management?I think in today's world we can always take help of technology to learn new things and excel in our fields. We should take absolute ownership of our life and be ready to come out of our comfort zones. Keep learning and keep earning. Please keep your eyes open and look for opportunies. Never say I am done. There is always much more to do and do it with absolute enthusiasm and spontaneity.

Where are you working currently? What is your designaon and what are your responsibilies?I work for Soype Inc. as a Director for Global Strategy and Client Services. Soype Inc is a niche consulng firm headquartered in Palo Alto (California) and a global soluon partner for Oracle-NetSuite (#1 Cloud ERP vendor) The organizaon has a global footprint with implementaons across US, UK, India, Europe, Philippines with a major focus on Africa.

I am primarily responsible for the business operaons and business enablement of the organizaon and provide execuve leadership for large strategic customer programs spanning across geographies. I have significant experience in developing, organizing and scaling operaons.

What is your educaonal background? How did it help in your chosen career?I have done my Masters in Computer Applicaon (MCA). About two decades back it was a very coveted program and MCA was a very new professional course. Honestly I knew nothing much about the course or computers, but my friend's brother was doing MCA at VJTI and that prompted us to prepare for this program. There were very few colleges which even offered the program at that me and the compeon was tough but by God's grace I managed to secure admission at S.N.D.T university and I consider that as one of the best decisions of my life.

What is your family background? Who encouraged you to build a successful career?Everyone in our family is well educated and my enre family supported me to build a successful career.

Who are/were your role models? It may sound vague but I never really had a role model. I have learned a lot and imbibed good aributes of many people either directly in contact with me or achievers in their own space, also learned from other's mistakes but believe in carving out an identy for myself. If you really ask for one name I would quote someone not even related to our work or domain but really has served as an inspiraon - Amitabh Bacchan.

Who were your mentors in your previous organizaons?Early in my career, one of my senior colleagues mentored me and I can sll reach out to him for anything. In my investment banking career, my manager in New York was my mentor.

What do you consider as your achievements or your career highlights?I don't believe in counng my achievements in numbers and goals. At different points in different jobs, I think that I have achieved what I was expected to and much more in many instances. I think that my real achievement has been that I have taken responsibility for my acons, have focused on opportunies rather than problems and the outcome is visible.

What are your strengths?Connecng the dots, problem solving skills, inspiraonal, persuasive and persistent.

How do you manage your me?Time is of essence. Inially when you learn to mul task it is challenging and I have struggled too as more and more responsibilies were thrusted, but over the years I have really learnt the art of managing me and I am geng beer and beer at it. I plan my day well, I organize my tasks including the errands and I believe in working smart I decide when I have to draw the line between office and

home and though my job is very demanding and I have to work from home as well, I do not carry the residue of home to work or vice-versa. Each has to be priorized according to the need and that way it is quanfiable and manageable.

What do you do to relax? (What are your hobbies?)Cooking is my stress buster. I love experimenng in cooking as long as it is vegetarian. I exercise my creave muscles through Painng, creave wring, crochet, embroidery. I am an avid reader and in spite of being a technology leader, it has not made me one bit tech savvy. I own more books than I can read but the feeling of owning a book is really great and bragging about it is even a greater feeling. I like stretching myself to new avenues and as part of that I have been parcipang in Times Women's Car rally for the last few years. Last year I parcipated in making the largest Crochet blanket in the world which entered into Guinness book of World record for 2016.

What style of management have you adopted?I have a simple minded management style – I do not believe in complex theories and frameworks... in fact I love to remove the complexity out of the whole equaon. Direct, challenging and hopefully thought provoking. Rather than being command and control type I prefer communicaon, collaboraon and coordinaon. Though that is a natural style, leadership is also situaonal and management has to be done with the right mix. If you trust people too easily and get divorced from the details you can always set up self for a failure. It is almost paradoxical - If you control too much growth is constrained whereas you let it loose and do not control then the quality lapses.

How is P&L managed at the project/program level in the companies where you worked? It really depends on the segmentaon and how cost and revenue centers of the organizaon are set up. P&L for projects rolling up to large strategic programs, business unit wise, region wise, and then consolidang at the parent level. I have operated at different levels and combinaons.

What is your advice to the young project managers of today?I would like to first quote a line from Jeff Bezos, “If we have a good quarter it's because of work we did 3, 4, 5 years ago. It's not because we did a good job this quarter.” Why I quote this is because millennials really want everything instantly. It is not about one project but it is about the enre project universe. They are a great bunch of talented people but they don't want to invest their me and paence to reap the benefits. Project management is not about a tle but about developing an ability to apply your knowledge, skills and techniques to take a project from concepon to compleon. It involves learning how to take risks and how to manage adverse situaons while being able to balance your work, teams and stakeholders in a nutshell and none of it can be achieved in one project alone. It is a journey and you need to travel in earth me and not light years.

How can one develop leadership skills?I like this simple quote. “Leadership is not about a tle or a designaon. It's about impact, influence and inspiraon. Impact involves geng results, influence is about spreading the passion you have for your work, and you have to inspire team-mates and customers.” …..Robin Sharma

Some people have a natural flair for leadership but it can be developed and learned. It is important to have the ability to ask “ What needs to be done” , What is right for the organizaon, develop the right plans and execute them with passion. A good leader is also a good crique of his own work and hence building that ability to self-analyze and improve is a very important skill.

Based on your experience which skills are absolutely essenal for project managers?Though an holisc approach is always more important and every skill has its own place ,I think that the most crical skills are Communicang right, being able to see the big picture and then drill down or roll up the work accordingly. Ancipatory skills and risk taking abilies are very crical for the success of a project.

A good project manager has to be very good in following through and providing visibility to stakeholders at every phase. And for me, the last but not the least is the ability to take responsibility for your acons and decisions.

Do you think that appointment of cerfied Project Managers should be made compulsory in Government/Public sector projects if we want to achieve success in Vision India? No not necessarily cerfied, but it is crical to idenfy the right fit rather than the perfect fit.

Do you think Government and Industry should have special programs to encourage women to enter and excel in project management? Can you give some suggesons for implemenng this?Yes, that will be a great iniave. Women are good at managing mulple priories and that naturally facilitates them to perform well in this role. Special programmes which can be sponsored or co-sponsored and offered as a movaonal perk to the employee should be encouraged.

Any suggesons for PMI? What should they do to encourage women to enter and excel in project management? My experience is that a lot of mes, women themselves are not able to break the glass ceiling apart from the external factors that exist. PMI can run a mentorship programme with the women alumni members to increase the awareness and establish the importance of PMP to encourage more and more women to enter and excel in PM. I will be personally happy to volunteer in carving out any such iniave.

What are your strengths?Balanced atude, analycal skills, clarity of thought & ability to connect to people and take them along, are my strengths.

How do you manage your me?Time management is an important facet of self-management. I use various me management techniques (for example, maintaining and tracking daily to-do list) to plan my work and ensure opmum use of me.

What do you do to relax? What are your hobbies?Reading ficon, listening to music (especially classical) are my hobbies. I enjoy cooking. For relaxaon, I normally watch good drama/movies.

What style of management have you adopted?Normally I use more of consultave management. Over a period of me, one needs to adopt management style suited to the project and team. For example, if team is fairly inexperienced, more handholding or authoritave style may be best suited during inial phases and while working with experienced teams, we need to ensure that measurable objecves are clearly laid down and understood and leave the how part to the team to decide and execute.

How to achieve work-life balance while pursuing a demanding career in PM?I believe if you are clear about your priories in life and ensure that you plan well, most of the mes you would be able to achieve work-life balance. For example, typically during project go-live phase, you are likely to spend more me on project and will be required to be available for work at short noce (like ad-hoc calls). Knowing this, I normally do not plan any personal high priority events during that week. That helps focusing much beer on project and reducing stress.

What is your opinion about using agile on fixed price projects? You need to decide project execuon methodology based on the nature of the project. For example, if the project requirements are likely to be get elaborated during project execuon, agile would be more suitable.

How is P&L managed at the project/program level in the companies where you worked?Typically P&L for the project/program gets managed based on EVM technique.

What is your advice to the young project managers of today?Management is an interesng journey. With right atude, readiness to learn, out of box thinking, ability to take people along and willingness to go extra mile, you can make project a great success,

How can one develop leadership skills?I think it is a combinaon of knowledge and learning on the job. You need to connuously idenfy what works best in which situaons/people and fine tune leadership style to achieve the objecves.

Based on your experience which skills are absolutely essenal for project managers?PMs need to have the good understanding of the project objecves (which requires adequate understanding of domain & technology), Project management techniques like EVM analysis and stakeholder management.

Aer working in established companies what challenges did you face when you moved to a startup? Aer working with established companies for 20 years, working with startup was a different and learning experience. It gave me the opportunity to go back to basics at mes, more flexibility to work and get overall company management experience rather than geng restricted to a Delivery unit.

Do you think that appointment of cerfied Project Managers should be made compulsory in Government/Public sector projects if we want to achieve success in Vision India? I would say it should be made compulsory that large Government /Public sector projects should have cerfied & experienced PMs. This would bring more efficiency during project execuon and would increase chances of mely compleon of the project without cost/me overrun.

Do you think Government and Industry should have special programs to encourage women to enter and excel in project management? Can you give some suggesons for implemenng this?I would say yes. Women managers can be encouraged to take up Government/Public sector projects. Government can start special programs to formally train young women managers on project management (can do with e-up with PMI) and provide them opportunity to manage small Government/Public sector projects (as a part of on job training). Aer successful compleon, these managers can be put on bigger government projects (especially in women health / educaon programs).

Any suggesons for PMI ? What should they do to encourage women to enter and excel in project management?PMI can help Government to train the young women in project management. It can also run PM training programs for people in rural areas (with help of Industry volunteers) for example managing vaccinaon program in village.

Where are you working currently? What is your designaon and what are your responsibilies?I am working with Godrej & Boyce Mfg Co Ltd, Prima Division, System Integraon SBU. I head the Program Management Office for Audio Visual Projects. My responsibility is to manage all projects from Order to Cash across India. This includes scheduling the project, movement of resources, monitoring the project in terms of project progress, melines and cosng, ensuring proper documentaon and communicaon is maintained with end client, resolving any bolenecks that may hamper project progress, documenng learnings and archival of project documents. Besides order to cash cycle, I am also responsible for developing project management processes to be followed for AV integraon projects, standardize project document templates, analyzing project delays and learnings for improvement, conduct and analyze customer sasfacon surveys, etc

What is your educaonal background? How did it help in your chosen career?I am a BE (Electronics), MMS (Markeng), PGDFT, PMP. My electronics engineering background has helped me understand the soluons (Audio Visual System Integraon) that we provide to customer on a deeper level. While reviewing projects with the technical team, I am in a beer posion to understand the issues and help in resolving it in a mely manner with the help of subject maer experts. Management Studies has helped develop the skillsets in me to work with a team which includes people who have a lot more technical and managerial experience than myself and yet make them accept to follow the processes defined and decisions made. I am beer able to manage various stakeholders, understand the cost benefit analysis of various decisions required within a project and ensure that organizaon goals are kept at the forefront in each decision taken. Post Graduate Diploma in Foreign Trade and PMP cerficaon has enhanced my knowledge and skill sets in the project management field.

What is your family background? Who encouraged you to build a successful career?I have a small family of my mom, dad and elder brother. Both dad and elder brother are into photography and video business, while my mother is a house wife. My mother has been the main movator behind my success. In-spite of her being a home maker, right from childhood she encouraged me to be on my own feet when I grew up. Both my parents ensured that I had all the resources that I needed to fulfill my dreams. When I grew older and went into engineering and management field, they ensured that my focus stayed on studies and not hampered by societal pressures of learning household chores and looking for marriage prospects. For my community where finding a prospect for a girl who crosses 23-24 years is difficult, my parents stood by me and ensured that I was seled in my career before they started looking at prospects.

Who were your mentors in your current/previous organizaons?I started my career with Godrej AV Soluons and I have spent close to 8 years in this organizaon under various capacies. During my tenure, I have had the opportunity to work with various managers and team mates and am glad to say that each one of them have taught me something new. Though each one has contributed to developing me into what I am today, I would like to specify the name of my first manager, Mr. Kelkar who groomed me from being a college graduate to a working professional.

Describe some of the challenges that you faced. There have been several challenges on the professional front during my career. When I joined as a project coordinator, there were absolutely no processes in place. Each order was handled on its own accord by the respecve project engineer. No one centrally knew the status of each order or how it progressed. I slowly started developing processes and standard work pracces. It was difficult to have seasoned team mates accept to follow these pracces. It required several years to set the project management processes in place in the organizaon where the concept of projects did not exist. Again it was thanks to the complete support extended by my seniors that helped me achieve the same.

What do you consider as your achievements or your career highlights?Seng up program management office in my organizaon single handedly and geng everyone to talk the language of projects.

What are your strengths?I am eager to learn new things and experiment with new processes. While working, I always ensure to listen to other's view points and involve team members in all process changes.

How do you manage your me?I have a set schedule for most important works. During the first 10 minutes, I jot down my to do list and priorize the work load. There are certain tasks that I mark to be completed on the same day no maer what. There are others which I pitch in only if I have me in between. Internal Review meengs with my team mates are fixed and not to be compromised upon.

What style of management have you adopted? My style of management would be inclusive. Since I work with subject maer experts, I should ensure that the decision is a team decision. I always encourage the team to try different things rather than downright rejecng an idea. Aer trying for a while, we again debate, discuss and then decide whether to connue or not with an idea.

How to achieve work-life balance while pursuing a demanding career in PM?I try to keep a balance between my job and personal life. I try to complete my work while in office and refrain from working from home unless essenal.

What is your advice to the young project managers of today?Project management is one field that will teach you everything to manage your own business. Just treat each project as if it was your own business and your money at stake.

Based on your experience which skills are absolutely essenal for project managers?Ability to work in diverse teams, listening to each team member is utmost important.

Do you think that appointment of cerfied Project Managers should be made compulsory in Government/Public sector projects if we want to achieve success in Vision India?Cerfied Project Managers do come in with a lot of knowledge about the proven pracces that can improve the efficiency of project implementaon. But at the end, the sponsor needs to talk the project language for Cerfied PMPs to ensure that the right processes get accepted and followed by all.

Do you think Government and Industry should have special programs to encourage women to enter and excel in project management? Can you give some suggesons for implemenng this?Yes, there should be more encouragement given to women to lead in this field.

Describe some of the challenges that you faced.During the course of my career, I have had to relocate several me. Transioning from one city to another was a challenge as well as opportunity for me. I moved from Pune to Mumbai to Hyderabad, as this was essenal for me to take up the different career opportunies. This process also helped me increase my awareness and embrace change willingly.

What do you consider as your achievements or your career highlights?I have always aspired to manage large and complex IT soluons and programs. I am happy that today I am able to do exactly what I had hoped and I achieved my goal by working for a large and prominent MNC.

What are your strengths? My biggest strengths include:

Ÿ Adaptability to adapt to change Ÿ Being a visionary and seng realisc goals Ÿ Organized and self-disciplined

Why did you opt for PMP cerficaon? I also thought of it as way of contribung back to society and expanding the reach of project management.

What is your advice to the young project managers of today? It's important to be a visionary. Every project is different and one needs to know the key success criteria for each project. Proper execuon is one of the crical elements for successful projects.

Anjali Butley is having more than 23 years Industry experience. She has worked on various capacies, currently she is working with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) as a SAP integrated business planning (SAP IBP) Centre of Excellence (CoE) Lead and managing delivery of projects. She is having more than 19 years' experience working on SAP Applicaons area. Her main core competency area is SAP's Supply Chain Management (SCM), SAP Integrated Business Planning, Advanced Planning and Opmizaon (APO), Producon Planning (PP). She has handled couple of full life Cycle project management of SAP projects with global clients in mul-cultural environment. She is cerfied mySAP PP consultant and internal ISO auditor. Her arcles are published in SAP's well know magazines like SAP Insider, SCMExpert which is well appreciated in global SCM communies.

What is your educaonal background? How did it help in your chosen career? My educaonal background is Master of Computer Applicaon (MCA) from S.N.D.T. Women's University. I completed my master degree in 1994. In 1994 computer professionals were very less in this in demand field that was booming in India. It helped me to choose my career in soware. MCA syllabus was totally helpful to us in IT field and also subjects like Accountancy and Organizaon Behaviour and Stascs helped us to understand the business. I received various trainings from the organizaons with whom I served. Based on these training programs and my work experience helped me to develop professional leadership skill.

What is your family background? Who encouraged you to build a successful career? My father was a mul-talented personality, a rered forest engineer from Maharashtra forest department. He did social service and guided many students in tradional Indian Astrology, Environments. My mother is a house wife. Both parents encouraged me to build my career.

Who were your mentors in your previous organizaons?Mr. A.N. Chaudhari and Mr. A. Basu who mentored me while I was developing computer applicaons in manufacturing industry.

Describe some of the challenges that you faced.a) Effecve Communicaon: Effecve communicaon is the major challenge I faced in the project execuon. Effecve communicaon is related to project work which flows from one team member to another. Communicaon does happen but the right informaon is not passed on to the other team member. Clear cut business requirement is not received from the client on me to complete the project task.

b) Involvement of the Stakeholders: Project team members are very much focused to deliver almost all deliverables on me. Due to limited involvement of the client stakeholders such as Subject Maer Experts (SMEs), Business Owners, End Users, it is very difficult to deliver clients deliverables on me.

c) Resources scarcity: To get the project we always pretend that our project team member would have required skill. If he/she does not have he will gain on the project. Geng right skilled team members in the project is the biggest challenge. Client's team members are very knowledgeable about their own business processes as well as the SAP applicaons related specific skill which is required for the project. Due to this, resources scarcity creates lots of challenges to meet the project deadlines.

d) Implementaon of Next Generaon's Applicaon: Next generaon applicaons are evolving and Product Company markets very less implementaon me for fixed scoped implementaon of the applicaon. It is a big challenge while managing projects of next generaon applicaons and to meet the expectaon of the clients.
