Statement of Purpose

Respected Sir/Madam,

I am writing you to express my interest for Graduate Masters program in Mechanical

Engineering for Spring 15. I appreciate this opportunity to introduce myself to your esteemed

University. With my educational background and working experience, I strongly believe that I

am suitable candidate for Mechanical Engineering. Embarking on a Post Graduate program is a

serious decision as I intend to make career path that will set a course to my professional goal. I

wish to place my credentials to prove my reason to study Post Graduate program at your

esteem university.

I have completed my Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering with academics First Class

with distinction, from University of Pune, India. The key subjects I studied are Applied

Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Manufacturing Process, Theory of Machines,Machine Design and Dynamics of Machinery. During my third year vacations I undertook an

internship at ‘Thermax Ltd’ in ENVIRO Division. I designed ‘Inlet cum Bypass Damper (ICBD)’ and

‘2 way Diverter Damper’ for Thermax. This served me with insight of basic fundamentals and

actual industrial requirements for designing any Product. This paved my way towards designing

and manufacturing.

Moreover, my first  job at ‘Star Engineers PVT LTD” As Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET) was in

R&D to design plastic, rubber components needed for sensor’s housing and its mounting. This

experience educated me with various factors involved in designing. After four months in Star

engineers, I joined ‘Surin Automotive PVT LTD’ as a Jr. Engineer in New Product Development

Department from 18th November 2013. My role was starting from designing of product and

process, material selection or finding equivalent, evaluate requirements of product till

manufacture it as customer demands. I also look after documentation of APQP. During my job

experience I found my field of interest and took decision to pursue Master’s. I believe I can do

well in Product Design, Development and manufacturing.

In retrospect, I found myself to be enthusiastic and active participator in every opportunity I

came across. Since school days I was fascinated to know how things work and tried to know

them by doing practical experiments. I participated in project competition in school days, it wasgeography project. We prepared a demonstration of volcanic eruption, which earned us the

first prize. My interest in projects and a will to do innovative things made to choose Mechanical

Engineering after 10th.

I completed my diploma from ‘D. Y. Patil Polytechnic’ college which is affiliated to Maharashtra

State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE). It provided me with a strong engineering

foundation and included all the tools I need to pursue my undergraduate degree. My keen

interest and the support of quality professors guided me to reach the  pinnacle of securing first

rank in the mechanical engineering department with 84.51%. My final Year Diploma Project was

‘Water Cooler Test Rig’. In this project we made a test rig which monitored per formance of

Water Cooler. It was an experiment in our curriculum, after completion of project we donatedit to our college. It is still used to demonstrate that experiment. Moreover, I had participated in

many extra- curriculum activities; one of that is project competition which was held at D Y Patil

Polytechnic on 12th January 2008 on occasion of Youth Day. Our project was ‘Generation of

Electricity’, which gave us first place in competition. I always aimed to achieve something

different to stand apart in the competitive world, this motivated me to author some technical

papers, which have received due appreciation for ‘Artificial Intelligence’  which secured us

second place in completion. The other state level paper presented was at Institute of

Technology, Malegaon and paper was delivered on ‘Modern Trends in Refrigeration’.

My bachelorette degree provided me many platforms, which served as excellent opportunities

for me to effectively utilize my acquired skills and knowledge. ‘SAE Supra’ was one of the b est

opportunities I came across. ‘SAE Supra’ is a designing, manufacturing and racing of a formula

one type car, which was held at Buddha International circuit. This event is organized by society

of automotive engineers India ‘SAE India’. It offered me fundamental knowledge and hand-on

experience of all the aspects involved in designing, manufacturing and testing of an automobile.

I also participated in a project display event held in Modern College of Engineering organized by

SAE India. The project was ‘Self Torque Adjusting Vehicle’, which come under topic

‘Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) ’. I was a key volunteer for conducting intercollege

event ‘Gyanguru’ in college fest ‘M-Pulse’, which was a Technical Paper Presentation

competition. My final year project titled ‘Generation of Electricity using WindBelt’. Windbelt is

a device used to convert wind power into electricity. It was originally invented by Shawn Frayne

in 2007. In our project we tried to increase efficiency of project by varying belt length and

finding substitute for belts (example, using Elastic belt replacing Mylar coated Taffeta). Our

project has zero pollution and no high grade fuels needed to generate electricity. It was a small

attempt to find and spread awareness of alternative source of electricity generation. It has zero

pollution and no high grade fuels needed to generate electricity. Though it cannot be used in

large electricity generation due to some disadvantages, but definitely it can be installed for

domestic and household purpose.

I accomplished many certified courses like two levels of School computer education program

conducted by CDAC, GIST at school level, MS-CIT which gave in depth knowledge of computer

and AutoCAD course from Centre of Advanced technologies (CAT) and passed with A1 Grade.

Another course of 'Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing' held at College of Engineering,

Pune, had Auto CAD, CATIA, ANSYS and CAD/CAM as its key components.

The reason for choosing this master’s program comes from the fact that I am keen to learn new

technologies and skill sets require to design and manufacture them. To design any product and

component a thorough study in all subjects like Finite Element Analysis, Thermal, Solid

mechanics is require. By taking this course I could study all subjects in depth and apply acquired

skills to develop a product.

As I decided to pursue Master’s, the first country came in my mind was USA. USA is well known

for its practical oriented educational system and research oriented work culture. It would keep

me updated with the latest technology and give me a great deal of experience to achieve my

long term career objective. One of the best graduate courses made me choose

________university for my Master's degree. After going through the course structure and

subjects, I found it is in line with my interests. This would definitely give me the in depth

knowledge and guide me for my future career. I would also like to pursue a Doctoral Program

after completing my Master’s.

I look forward to fresh challenges of studying in an exciting conglomerate of people from

different cultures and countries of tackling hitherto un-chartered territory and eventually in

making my presence felt in wider arena of life. I am aware of the arduous efforts required for a

rigorous Master's program. I promise to give complete dedication to grasp the knowledge given

at your university and contributing meaningfully to your college community. Considering my

interest and skill set, I believe that Master's would be the most prudent extension of

my academic pursuit. I believe my passion, perseverance and sincerity, make me a competent

candidate for a Master's degree at your college.

Yours sincerely

Prasad Mehta
