God who in Jesus calls us -

open hearts and minds to your invitation.

God of the pilgrim way - be our companion day by day.

God of the still, small voice - teach us to pray.

Grant that in our calling, our following, our pilgrimage, we may see your

kingdom of truth and peace -

and delight to bring others to your love.

We make this prayer through Jesus, the Lord.

(The “Follow” Prayer)

God of generosity, whose Son Jesus gathers us as one

around the table of rejoicing; be with us as we gather in his name.

Give us hope, encouragement, unity, expectancy,

and by our time together, draw us closer to one another and to you.

We make this prayer through Jesus,

the Lord.

(The “Gather” Prayer)

O come, O Holy Spirit:

come as holy fire and burn in us.

Come as holy wind and cleanse us.

Come as holy light and lead us.

Come as holy truth and teach us.

Come as holy forgiveness and free us.

Come as holy love and enfold us.

Come as holy life and dwell in us.

The Prayer Diary - October to December 2020

The main part of this Prayer Diary covers the quarter from Sunday 27th

September to Saturday 26th December, week by week, under the following

headings:

Anglican - Biddings for each day taken from the Anglican Cycle of Prayer

(adapted and updated where possible), so that we are praying with the

Anglican Church round the world.

Hereford - Again, a bidding for each day: each quarter these will feature half

of our deaneries and parishes, along with diocesan organisations, areas of

work, and officers;

Porvoo - This weekly bidding pairs the Lutheran churches of the Nordic and

Baltic areas and the Anglican churches of the British Isles and of Spain and

Portugal, which have signed the Porvoo Declaration recognising each others’

ministries. Also included is the Latvian Church, which has not yet taken a

decision on signing the Declaration, and the Church of Denmark, which has

not signed but wishes to develop links with the churches which have signed;

The Wider View - Biddings and promptings for prayer relating to world

mission and development, including our own World Church links, among

them our companion links with the Kirchenkreis Nürnberg in Germany, and

the Tanzanian dioceses of Tanga, Dar es Salaam, Masasi and Newala;

This Week - Focuses for prayer during the week, on themes and issues in

healthcare, the community, education and the changing seasons, along with

events, meetings, and activities within our Diocese and perhaps more widely.

Prayer - A prayer or reflection appropriate to the week.

Please send entries for the next edition which covers the quarter January to

March 2021 to me at [email protected] - clearly marked in the

subject area as Prayer Diary. The more I know about events and activities,

the more accurate and focused our prayer biddings can be. Please also let

me know if you spot any mistakes or omissions - they do happen, alas, but I

do my best to make sure this Diary is as accurate as possible!

You may find the following explanation of the initials used helpful:

MAP - Mission Action Plan

LMC - Ludlow Mascall Centre (formerly BMC)

CMD - Continuing Ministerial Development

CGH - Cuddeston in Gloucester & Hereford (formerly WEMTC)

IMD - Initial Ministerial Development

DAC - Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches

DDVO - Diocesan Director of Vocations and Ordinands

PAT - Post Admission Training for Readers

MDO - Mission (MAP) Development Officer

The Wider View

If even well equipped health-care systems in Europe have found handling Covid difficult, the Palestinian health-care service, burdened by budget shortages and fragmented administration, is bound to fare much worse. The Gaza Strip in particular is impacted by the ongoing blockade, making many treatments unavailable and meaning local health staff do not have up-to-date medical knowledge. Pray for these territories as cases there increase.

Today Pray for those who, all being well, will be ordained as deacons today, and for the parishes in which they will serve and train: Jo Burden (West Hereford), Lawrence Gittins (Ludlow), Tiffany Jackson (Ross), Joe Simons (Cleobury Mortimer), Katie Smith (Kingsland).

Michael is honoured as the great protector of Christians, and his day may inspire prayers for all who feel they are under attack as they seek to follow Christ, and for the Church where it is persecuted and abused. Wool Week this week reminds us to pray for the many sheep farmers of our Diocese, as the wool price continues to fall, leaving some farmers to burn or compost fleeces they can’t sell. Healthy Eating Week and Bike to School Week remind us how important the health of our children is, and to pray for all that is done by schools and communities to encourage healthy eating and good exercise in children. Lupus Awareness Month begins with October. This is a systemic auto-immune disease that occurs when your own body's immune system attacks tissues and organs: pray for research, understanding and care. This is also Pituitary Awareness Month: Pituitary disorders can be caused by tumours which block the production of essential hormones by the pituitary gland.

kindle in us the fire of love, and sow within us holy fear; strengthen our weakness by your power,

and bind us closely to you and to each other, in a firm and indissoluble bond of unity.

This Week At St Luke’s Tide give thanks for his distinctive telling of the story of Jesus and of the young Church; pray too for all who work as doctors and in medicine, and for all hospital chaplains. 18th October is also Anti-Slavery Day. Black Lives Matter has given this an extra sharpness and urgency this year, and we have been made more aware of the way in which the slave trade shaped our history and economy during that era. The formal ending of slavery across the world has not ended the actual practice, and people are still abused and exploited by others, and denied control over their own lives. Pray this week for the work and witness of the Mothers’ Union, within our Diocese and around the world. The Diocesan Advisory Committee is scheduled to meet this week. Pray for all that is being done to ensure our church buildings are in good repair, but also that they are able to provide for the ministry and worship needed today. As the situation with regards to Covid-19 in Tanzania remains very blurred, pray for all hospital workers and health workers in the community, and for the knowledge and skills to deal with the pandemic. Pray too that those who are working with the sick, in hospital or out in the field, may themselves be protected from the disease.

This Week As we celebrate Bible Sunday, pray for the Bible Societies and for all who encourage the reading, study and discussion of God’s word. Pray too for Bible study groups and meetings in our parishes, and now very often usingZoom and other social media platforms. Pray for all who work to translate the Scriptures, and to make them available to new eyes and hearts. Simon and Jude, whose shared day falls this week, may be “bit players” among the disciples, but they were among those present on the Day of Pentecost. Pray for the Church today to be bold in mission, and apostolic in faith and service. Martin Luther is commemorated this week: pray for the Lutheran churches of the world, giving especial thanks for the links fostered through the Porvoo Communion, bringing together Anglicans from these islands and the Lutheran churches of the Baltic, and also for our own links with Nuremberg. International Brain Tumour Awareness Week begins on Monday - this is the cancer most likely to kill those aged under forty. Pray for research and treatment, and give thanks for the advances made so far. Hallowe’en has become a major industry over recent years, promoted in high street shops and supermarkets. What should be a reminder of the dangers of the dark has instead become a celebration of them. Pray we may be effective and persuasive in our celebration of the light, and pray also for the safety of children, for example as they go “trick or treating”, particularly with regard to the present restrictions imposed by the Covid pandemic.

and I pray that you would keep me this day also from sin and every evil,

that all my doings and life may please you. For into your hands I commend myself,

my body and soul, and all things. Let your holy angel be with me,

that the evil foe may have no power over me.

As the presidential election campaign in the United States draws towards its close, pray for honesty, openness and justice, and that the increasingly divided communities of the USA may find a measure of healing.

This Week Pray for all who will attend this week’s Visitations at St Laurence’s, Ludlow on Tuesday, and for all elected to serve as church wardens. Porvoo England: Norwich, Bishop Graham Usher, Bishop Alan Winton, Bishop Jonathan Meyrick; Sweden: Luleå, Bishop Åsa Nyström.

The Wider View

USPG’s “Journey with us” is one of a number of schemes enabling people of faith - many of them young - to spend time in another part of the world, sharing in work, ministry and community life. Many who had hoped to travel this year will have been unable to do so because of the pandemic, and opportunities for growth, sharing and partnership have been missed.

This Week Remembrance services will be different this year from the usual; pray for all who will attend, that services and events can be held safely, and for the work and witness of the Royal British Legion and other forces charities. Pray too for serving members of our armed forces, and for forces chaplains, and for all whose lives are damaged or destroyed by the experience of war. Alcohol and Sugar awareness weeks, both of which begin this week, prompt thought and prayer about diet and self-care. Saturday 14th November is World Diabetes Day - this is one of fastest growing illnesses in this country - pray for all who live with diabetes, and especially for children who are diabetic, and their parents and carers. World Kindness Day on Friday reminds us to be thoughtful and considerate towards one another, in a world where simple kindness can sometimes seem to be in short supply. Pray also for all who will attend the Visitations this week on Tuesday at Bridgnorth. This year’s visitations are episcopal - as we pray for those to be sworn in as wardens, pray also for Bishop Richard has he continues to get to know the Diocese and its parishes and people. This week is also kept as Talk Money Week, organised by the Money and Pensions Service. There is often a stigma around talking about money, and particularly admitting to problems and issues. This year Covid will have had a major impact on many household budgets, especially now the Furlough Scheme has ended, and high unemployment rates will continue for some time. Pray we may be attentive and aware where people are struggling, and for help schemes offering advice and support, some of which are initiated and supported by churches and localcommunities.

Grant us grace, O Lord, to learn of your judgements which overtake us

when we set brother against brother and nation against nation.

so that we may dwell in concord under your providence;

and may your kingdom come among us as we dedicate ourselves to you, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Pray for all who teach around the world, and for the teachers, other staff and students in our Tanzania link schools. Covid has halted or greatly impaired education in many parts of the world, and many children and young people will be unable to catch up or replace what they have lost.

This Week This Sunday is kept as Roadpeace Sunday. The usual Roadpeace service at the Cathedral will not be happening this year, but the day remains an important opportunity to remember the many who are killed or seriously injured in road traffic accidents. Pray for all who have been bereaved or whose lives have been changed because of a road accident, and for all that aims to improve the safety of our roads. Road Safety Week runs from Monday. Pray for Rural Deans and Lay Co-Chairs, due to meet this week. Pray too for all who will attend the Visitation on Wednesday at Ross-on-Wye. Anti-Bullying Week takes place this week: pray for all who experience bullying, at school or college, or in the workplace, or, increasingly, on-line. Many suffer in silence, and their misery goes unnoticed. Nursery Rhyme Week reminds us of the importance of rhymes and songs within child development, and perhaps also prompts prayers for the play groups and nurseries within our communities. World Toilet Day on Thursday reminds us that around a third of the world’s population still lack access to safe and sanitary toilet facilities - pray for improvements in health and hygiene for the world’s poorest communities. Give to us and all who use the roads consideration and care for other road users. Grant to those who drive vehicles consideration for others

and a determination to avoid driving in ways which could cause danger. Give to those who walk or cycle on the roads and those who play beside them

thoughtful caution and care. Give all who are travelling today, by whatever means,

The Wider View

Pray that the impetus and momentum of the Black Lives Matter movement may continue to impact on hate and prejudice throughout our world; pray too for all who are abused, excluded or exploited by others because of their race or their faith.

This Week St Cecilia’s Day would normally fall on 22nd, prompting prayer for all who sing or make music in our churches and communities. Covid has had a huge impact on church and community choirs that would normally be learning music for Christmas services and concerts at this time. Some choirs will probably not survive the crisis. Pray that we will soon arrive at a point at which those who sing and play may be able to meet and practise and perform. Wednesday of this week celebrates Isaac Watts, arguably one of our greatest hymn writers: pray for all whose hymns and worship songs enable and enhance our worship. Mothers’ Union Trustees meet this week - pray for MU members and branches in our Diocese, and for the organisation as a force for mission and development throughout our Communion. Pray too for members of Bishop’s Council and for those who will attend this Saturday’s Visitations at St Peter’s, Hereford. Pray for all who live in the shadow of a violence often hidden from view, and also for the work of refuges and counsellors. Carers’ Rights Day, on Thursday, reminds us that a huge amount of caring is done by relatives and friends, that this can often isolate them from the wider community and that frequently they feel unsupported and unheard. Pray for all that is done to make carers aware of their rights and of sources of help. At Thanksgiving, pray for the government and people of the United States, and for a time of healing and reconciliation after a troubled year and following the presidential election at the beginning of this month.

Lord, we pray for your Church in today’s world: may it be true to the Gospel and responsive to the needs of all;

may it conserve what is good in its tradition, and reach out boldly to the future;

while treasuring the variety of human response to your grace. This we ask

This Week As Advent begins, pray for our keeping of this season, as a time of preparation and prayer. St Andrew’s Day tomorrow prompts prayer for the churches and the people of Scotland. Andrew is also the national saint of Russia. Pray for our schools, as they come towards the close of what will have been a uniquely testing and stressful term. Many if not all will have had to cancel their normal pre-Christmas events. Prayer Richard Baxter

Keep us, O Lord, while we tarry on this earth,

in a serious seeking after thee, and in an affectionate walking with thee,

every day of our lives; that, when thou comest,

we may be found not hiding our talent, nor serving the flesh,

nor yet asleep with our lamp unfurnished, but waiting and longing for our Lord,

our glorious King, for ever and ever.

The Wider View

Pray for the many families worldwide who have lost loved ones as a consequence of Covid 19, and for all, here and elsewhere, who are isolating as winter increases the risk of infection. Pray for those countries least able to cope with the pandemic, and for every place where infection rates are continuing to increase. May the fruits of research and development, and especially a vaccine, be shared widely across our world.

This Week Monday remembers John of the Cross: give thanks for all who express their faith in poetry, and pray for the Christian poets of our own time. December 18th is International Migrants’ Day: in a world of enormous gaps between poverty and wealth, and where war and oppression impact directly on those with no wish to be combatants, there are inevitably huge movements of people, often thought of as threatening. Many migrants are themselves exploited by those they pay for passage, or find themselves in a situation almost as bad as what they left. This United Nations day aims to foster understanding and to ensure respect for human rights; pray for all who feel driven to leave what they know in search of safety or a better life. On 17th December 1903 the Wright brothers achieved the first powered human flight; pray for all who today strive to achieve something new, and to push the boundaries of human achievement. This is a week of Ember Days, by tradition days of fasting and prayer, and also a time to pray for all in ministry, and for vocations. The traditional “Great O’s” begin with O Sapientia (“O Wisdom”) on Thursday - antiphons to the Magnificat in the last days before Christmas that encourage a solemn preparation for the feast, by reflecting each day on one of the traditional titles for the Messiah. Pray we may be spiritually ready to welcome the Christ-child and to mark his birth. Pray for shop owners and all who work in the retail trade in our towns and villages, in this run-up to Christmas which is normally such a busy time. Pray too for our local farmers’ markets and for specialist food producers. Pray for all who work in the health service within our Diocese, that as the cold and flu season gathers pace alongside Covid, we may not overwhelmed.

Open to us, Lord, your great door, O Fountain of all mercy, hear our prayer and have mercy on our souls.

Lord of the morning, and ruler of al seasons, have mercy on our souls. Shine upon me, Lord, and I shall be light like the day;

I will sing your praise in light while I marvel; may the morning awaken me to the praise of your Godhead,

and I will pursue the study of your Word all the day long. With the day may your light shine on our thoughts

and may it drive away the shadows of error from our souls. The creation is full of light, give light also to our hearts that they may praise you with the day and the night.

This Week Give thanks for the beauty of the countryside around us in this par of the world, even in Winter. The annual Ramblers Festival of Winter Walks begins this Sunday and continues over Christmas and the New Year - give thanks for all that encourages us to get out and about. December 20th is kept as International Human Solidarity Day. Pray that in a world that seems increasingly divided, we may persist in recognising our brothers and sisters as part of ourselves, even across the boundaries of race and culture and faith that we so readily turn into barriers. As we enter the week of Christmas, pray for all who will be travelling - some returning home, some visiting friends and family - and that they may travel well and safely. Pray too for all those unable this Christmas to be where they would wish to be and with those they would want to be with. Give thanks for all those who have been working hard in our communities this year to make sure those who are isolated and at risk are looked after and provided for, via foodbanks, community angels schemes etc. Many will still be doing this on Christmas Day and onwards. Pray that our Christmas worship, affected though it will undoubtably be by the Covid pandemic, will nonetheless be attractive, compelling, and worthy of our Lord, as we celebrate divine love born in human form among us. And pray throughout this week that there may be peace in the holy places, and for all those who are actively and genuinely working to build bridges of understanding, co-operation and peace wherever in our world communities are divided and at odds. The Christ is born under the shadow of Herod and Rome: pray for all who campaign against oppression and tyranny today.

Prayer Bernard of Clairvaux

Let your goodness, Lord, appear to us, that we, made in your image, conform ourselves to it.

In our own strength, we cannot imitate your majesty, power and wonder; nor is it fitting for us to try.

But your majesty reaches from the heavens, through the clouds, to the earth below. You have come to us as a small child,

but you have brought us the greatest of all gifts, the gift of eternal love. Caress us with your tiny hands, embrace us with your tiny arms,

and pierce our hearts with your soft, sweet cries.
