Prayer for Religious Liberty

O GOD OUR CREATOR, from your provident hand we

have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit

of happiness. You have called us as your people and

given us the right and the duty to worship you, the

only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through

the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us

to live out our faith in the midst of the world,

bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel

to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in

our vigilance for the gi3 of religious liberty. Give us

the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our

freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage

in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of

your Church and the freedom of conscience of all

people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a

clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters

gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the

history of our naon, so that, with every trial

withstood and every danger overcome— for the sake

of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come

a3er us— this great land will always be “one naon,

under God, indivisible, with liberty and jusce for all.”

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Dear Friends,

I share a few statements of our Holy Father Pope

Francis concerning religious liberty.

“[A] healthy pluralism…does not entail privazing religions

in an a=empt to reduce them to the quiet obscurity of the

individual’s conscience or to relegate them to the enclosed

precincts of churches, synagogues or mosques.” - Evangelii

Gaudium (“The Joy of the Gospel”), no. 255

“Religious freedom is not only that of private thought or

worship. It is the liberty to live, both privately and publicly,

according to the ethical principles resulng from found

truth.” - June 20, 2014

“We must promote religious liberty for all people. Every

man and woman must be free to profess his or her faith,

whatever it may be. Why? Because that man and that

woman are children of God.” - May 20, 2013

“When, in the name of an ideology, there is an a=empt to

remove God from society, it ends up adoring idols, and

very soon men and women lose their way, their dignity is

trampled and their rights violated.” - Sept. 23, 2014

“We cannot deny that intolerance towards those with

different religious convicons is a parcularly insidious

enemy, one which today is being witnessed in various

areas around the world. All believers must be parcularly

vigilant so that, in living out with convicon our religious

and ethical code, we may always express the mystery we

intend to honor.” - Sept. 23, 2014

“We must not be afraid of being Chrisan and living as

Chrisans! We must have this courage to go and proclaim

the Risen Christ, for he is our peace; he made peace with

his love, with his forgiveness, with his blood and with his

mercy.” - Apr. 7, 2013

We live in a me when more and more frequently

those who exercise governmental responsibility as well as

many of our fellow cizens define “freedom of religion” in

a narrow and decepve way. Religion is more than

worship. It is the ability to live one’s life according to one’s

conscience – to live according to one’s deeply held moral

and faith based convicons. Our bishops and Pope Francis

call us to recognize the dangers we face as free people and

as men and women of faith.
