Feb. 3-4Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The reading today from the
Book of Job speaks of the
human condition we all face:
difficulty, sickness, pain and
death. However, in the Gospel,
Jesus comes as one who heals
and comforts. Our faith is rooted
in the mystery of life and death.
None of us escapes our human condition, but
in Christ all pain, suffering and even death is
transformed to risen life. How can we bring
hope to those burdened by suffering and
pain this week? Who needs our hand and
voice to help them know that God loves and
cares for them?
Febrero 3-4Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
Hoy, la lectura del libro de Job
habla de la condición humana
que todos enfrentamos: dificultad,
enfermedad, dolor y muerte.
¿Cómo podemos llevar esperanza a aquellos

(Is 58:6-7)

LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR/CARTA DE NUESTRO PARROCO
Dear parishioners,Monsignor Joseph Deane who served as the pastor of Santa Cruz parish from 1999-2009 was admitted into the hospital over a week ago and received a pacemaker for his heart. The procedure was successful, and he is now at a Rehab Center to convalesce. Please remember Father Deane in prayer that he may continue to recover and resume ministry.
All praise and glory are yours, Lord our God, for you have called us to serve you in love. Bless Father Deane with health, strength and courage to continue to follow Jesus your Son. Amen.
The care of the physical structures of our parish facility is an important aspect of the operation of Santa Cruz. We are truly blessed with a legacy of building that provides for the celebration of the Sacraments and for pastoral care in all of its aspects.
Recently, the twenty-two metal posts that support the walkways that join church and offices and school entrance were repaired and painted. Over time, the accumulation of glue from affixing outside signs and rust had deteriorated the metal. The surface was repaired, and primer paint was applied before a final acrylic coat was put on to protect the surface for many years to come. I am grateful to our parishioners who carried out this work completely gratis. Over the past year, our parishioners installed a new drainage system around the entire perimeter of the church and did this work completely by hand. This project is most effective, as the heavy rains, which came upon us in August of last year, did not flood the interior of the church. Our parishioners accomplished this immense amount of manual work completely gratis.
O God, your mercy is without measure, the treasures of your goodness without limit. We thank your gentle majesty for the favors you have bestowed on us. Be close to those who give with an open heart and prepare them for the rewards of the life to come. Amen.
Your Pastor,Father David.
FAST AND ABSTINENCE
Fasting regulationsOne of the most ancient practices linked to the season of Lent
is fasting. Fasting is not only a discipline of self-control; but it also serves as an aid to prayer. Just as our bodies hunger for physical food, so too, do our souls hunger for God. By fasting we signify our one-ness with the Lord, acknowledge our need for conversion, and give witness to our solidarity with those less fortunate. Traditionally, the canonical obligation of fasting has been understood in the church as the taking of only one full meal a day. These traditions of fasting and abstinence are an expression of our desire to be converted in our hearts, to be reconciled with each other, and to love our neighbor.
The U.S. Catholic bishops call for all Catholics 14 years and older to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and the Fridays of Lent. Abstinence forbids the consumption of meat, but not of eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal fat.
Catholics who are 18 to 59 years old are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting refers to the quantity of food eaten. Traditionally, fasting calls for refraining from eating between meals
and consuming only one full meal per day. Some food which will not equal another full meal is permitted.
“This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own.” (Is 58:6-7)
Other forms of penance that we are encouraged to observe during Lent include:
• Prayer: In prayer, we encounter and walk with God. Opportuni-ties for prayer can include attending Mass, praying the liturgy of the hours, praying within the family, visiting a chapel, prayerfully reading the Bible, praying the rosary or praying before the Blessed Sacrament.
• Almsgiving: This penitential practice entails giving money or other resources for the benefit of those in need. One possible source of this money is that which has been saved from fasting or other means of self-denial. In our diocese, we are encouraged to give alms to the Ashes to Easter project, which benefits missionaries from our diocese.

Mateo 19:4-6
