Chaplain’s Core By Father Carlos Lerma

Our Lady of Sorrows

The month of September is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, whose memorial the Church celebrates on September 15. Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows or Our Lady of the Seven Dolores are names by which the Blessed Virgin Mary is referred to in relation to sorrows in her life. The Seven Sorrows (or Dolors) are events in the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which are a popular devotion for Catholics to say daily one Our Father and seven Hail Mary’s for each.

1. The Prophecy of Simeon. (Luke 2:34-35) 2. The Flight into Egypt. (Matthew 2:13) 3. The loss of the child Jesus in Temple. (Luke 2:43-45) 4. Mary meets Jesus on the way to Calvary. 5. Jesus dies on the cross. (John 19:25) 6. The piercing of the side of Jesus and Mary’s receiving the body of Jesus in her arms. (Matthew 27: 57-59) 7. The body of Jesus is placed in the tomb. (John 19:40-42)

These Seven Sorrows should not be confused with the five Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary. Let’s ask Our Lady of Sorrow for her intercession in our lives and families to find in her comfort and joy. As we pray together:

O God, who in this month Give your Church the grace

To imitate devoutly the Blessed Virgin Mary In contemplating the Passion of Christ,

Grant, we pray, through her intercession, That we may cling more firmly each day

To your Only Begotten Son And come at last to the fullness of his grace.

Amen.

From the Deputy Grand Knight

Brothers - We are at that time of year when grandparents send the children home and vacations have drawn to a close. Parents have waited for this month and the school year has officially re-opened. Clothes for the school year have been bought with all the accessories to match. The frenzy of a new school year has passed. It has come

to that time of year where we take out the calendars and mark the dates of sports schedules, school breaks, and PTA meetings for the children. While we mark the calendars of these events, we should also check what council activities we can attend during the last part of the year (open house, degree ceremonies, recruitment blitz, family picnics, Halloween and Christmas get-togethers, etc.). Schedule these dates ahead of time to help organize our schedules to stave off any conflicts. Just a little time from each brother Knight means a little less for others. Please give your time to attend and/or volunteer to make each event worth remembering. Keep the children safe to and from school, and enjoy the little quiet time we get each day.

Vivat Jesu, Dan Richard - Deputy Grand Knight

NOCTURNAL ADORATION - Blessed Sacrament Chapel (OLMC):

Join us on the FIRST FRIDAY (10 PM – 6 AM) for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The Holy Hour consists of Powerful Readings, Silent and Recited prayer. The next Nocturnal Adoration is the weekend of September 5/6. Join brother Knights and their families as we prepare to meet

the Lord. Many of our loyal and dedicated members have passed or are getting older. We need some help on the early morning hours. No need to make a long term commitment - choose any hour, you will be surprised and gratified. Families are encouraged to attend anytime.

Raising Awareness about Life Insurance

Each September since 2003 has been designated as Life Insurance Awareness Month. Like most awareness-raising campaigns, Life Insurance Awareness Month was created because there is an overwhelming lack of understanding of the product among the general public. Each year, the Life

Insurance Market Research Association puts out the results from a recent survey, and unfortunately, the numbers they report continue to be discouraging. A recent survey found that 76 percent of people polled did not have a personal financial advisor. Sixty-eight percent of that same survey group said their opinion of the current economic conditions was somewhat unfavorable or very unfavorable. In other words, a majority of those surveyed were uncomfortable with the economy and the uncertainty it brings, yet they did not seek professional assistance. Maybe they spoke with their friends and family. Maybe they hoped the instability would go away on its own. Maybe they did not know to whom to turn. If you fall into this category, please remember that as a member of the Knights of Columbus, you have a full-time, professional agent you can call your own. My primary responsibility is the care and service of your family’s life insurance, disability insurance, retirement and long-term care needs. I’ll answer your questions because I want your decisions to be informed ones. I want to help. Another LIMRA statistic said 43 percent of people did not buy life insurance because they worry about “making the wrong decision.” Talk with me and afterwards, you’ll understand that the only wrong decision was not purchasing sooner to protect your family’s future.

From the Faithful Navigator

Respect for the Flag of Our Country…The flag of the United States of America is universally representative of the principles of the justice, liberty, and democracy enjoyed by the people of the United States. People all over the world recognize the flag of the United States as symbolic of the United States. No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America. The flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organizational

flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor. The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property. The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water or merchandise. The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free. The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be chained, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way. It should never be used as a covering for a ceiling. The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature. The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything. The flag should never be used for advertising purposes. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs, printed on or impressed on paper napkins, boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and disposal. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown. No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, policemen and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn over the left lapel near the heart. The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning. Thank You! To all (a resounding 93!) who attended our Dine-Out on August 5th at Warwick Forest Active Retirement Living. Special thanks to Lew and Bill for coordinating the event. To all who attended and assisted in the Past Grand Knight/Past Faithful Navigator Dinner on August 16.
