Difference between a Myth or Legend?
144
According to Oban: Legends are stories that have been made up, but they are
different from myths. Myths answer questions about how the natural world works, and are
set in a time long-ago, before history was written.
Legends are about people and their actions or deeds. The people lived in more recent times
and are mentioned in history. The stories are told for a purpose and are based on facts, but
they are not completely true.
http://www.planetozkids.com/oban/what-are-legends.htm
According to E2BN: What are legends?
A legend is a semi-true story, which has been passed on from person-to-person and has important meaning or symbolism for the culture in which it originates. A legend usually includes an element of truth, or is based on historic facts, but with 'mythical qualities'. Legends usually involve heroic characters or fantastic places and often encompass the spiritual beliefs of the culture in which they originate.
What are myths?
A myth is a story based on tradition or legend, which has a deep symbolic meaning. A myth 'conveys a truth' to those who tell it and hear it, rather than necessarily recording a true event. Although some myths can be accounts of actual events, they have become transformed by symbolic meaning or shifted in time or place. Myths are often used to explain universal and local beginnings and involve supernatural beings. The great power of the meaning of these stories, to the culture in which they developed, is a major reason why they survive as long as they do - sometimes for thousands of years. http://myths.e2bn.org/teachers/info311-what-are-myths-legends-and-folktales.html

Email sent to staff regarding the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
Happy Monday to all,
Today my 6th period students begin their BYOD (bring your own device) part of our Mythbusting PBL. During 6th period today and tomorrow, my students will be walking
from room to room asking for students and teachers to take a survey on their own hand-held device (cell phone, tablet, etc.) regarding a myth/legend. The survey should take no more than one minute.
The expectations are my students will come in quietly and courteously and ask for your
permission to administer the survey to you and a few students in your classroom. No names will be collected during the survey and it is completely anonymous.
Should this be an interruption to your classroom, please feel free to post a "Do Not Disturb" sign outside your door.
I have attached a "Do Not Disturb" sign in this email should you need one.
Again, this survey will only be administered today and tomorrow.
Thank you for your understanding and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have upon your 6th period.

Climate Essay Instructions
Background
Climate Change is a well-documented trend in
meteorology. Data strongly suggest that this climate change
is largely created by human input of Carbon Dioxide into the
atmosphere. This gas is a known greenhouse gas which
means the gas traps heat in the atmosphere. Furthermore, the
current warming pattern has begun to release methane gas from certain regions.
Methane is an even more potent greenhouse gas. Though there are natural releases
of carbon dioxide and other factors creating a warming global climate, after these
are included, the majority of the change has been revealed to be caused by the
burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil as well as a reduction in the health of
the forests and oceanic plankton from deforestation and pollution.
As some areas have warmed this has also forced a change in weather
patterns to create more extremes of weather and changes in weather patterns. These
changes in weather patterns, including generalized global warming, require people
to adjust to more variation in the local climate and ultimately a risk of massive
coastal flooding.
Though the scientific community of meteorologists and climatologists are
united in the causes and consequences of climate change, politicians and various
groups of people continue to ignore or even deny the causes and potential
consequences of climate change preventing significant global action on this issue.
155
Some political action has come forth though with meager support and little
impact. As climatologist warn of the need for immediate action, politicians and
populations have shown themselves to be unwillingly to begin any aggressive
action that could mean major changes to the way of life in developed countries and
potentially devastate their economies. Simultaneously, the nations which are most
vulnerable to the changes already in force are those least able to adjust.
This resistance is strongly influenced by the costs involved and the potential
need to change entire lifestyles as well as the natural variation in climate making
definitive patterns more difficult to perceive locally. Gradually, communities and
nations are accepting the need for action. The larger question is gradually
becoming twofold, what strategies should be employed and who should bear
the cost. Undeveloped countries resent being asked to bear the cost both in the loss
of development of industry and being forced to pay for the cost of dealing with a
changing climate created by wealthier nations.
Tasks
1) In an introduction, section one, document examples of climate change and the
impacts created by that change both physically and politically. 2-3 pages.
2) In section two, discuss numerous strategies to combat climate change in at least
two major areas, reducing the input of greenhouse gases by using alternatives
and ways human populations can adapt to a more variable and unreliable
climate. 3-4 pages.
3) In section three, take a position regarding what changes should be made and
who, if anyone should take responsibility for creating and paying for the
needed changes or, alternatively, why no action needs to be taken. Use your
references to support your argument. 2-3 pages.
156
4) Use research based evidence to support each point that you make in each
section. Make use of newspaper articles, magazines, books, and scientific
research.
5) Create a references page and be sure to refer (cite) that source when using
information found from there. There should be at least ten different resources
with at least three coming from a scientific journal source. There should be a
minimum of three references for the first section, at least five in the second
section, and at least two in the third section.
6) Create a multi-media Google slideshow of your position. This should be no less
than 20 slides and should include student created videos of at least two minutes
each on at least 3 slides either highlighting your views or dramatizing the
effects of climate change. There should also be a minimum of three slides with
graphs or charts.
7) At the end of your paper, make a personal statement of your own observations,
opinions, and efforts regarding pollution in your community.
Procedure
21st century learning involves the ability to use technology to communicate
and collaborate with others to create a product, in this case your argument
paper. This paper also requires you to think critically about the choices to be
made while you argue your point. You will work in pairs to collect your
information, discuss your ideas, and create your argument paper using Google
drive. Finally, you will use Google slides to create a multimedia slideshow
157
presentation such as could be used to present your thoughts to others. You and
your partner will be asked to document your collaboration.

Beginning of
intervention
I only did a lot of
research because
the information
about climate
change was
interesting.
Its great to
collaborate
especially if you
are at home.
It still feels great
to use because it
is helpful in
researching.
I did not
accomplish much
today because I
was only reading
the articles about
climate change.
Middle I researched and
continued
working on the
essay for the
introduction.
It is great
because you can
get things
finished quickly.
It is not the best
way but it sure is
one of the great
ways to
collaborate. It
comes second
after
collaborating in
person.
I researched on
climate change
internationally
and keep
learning more
about how it is
affecting us.
Late Middle I researched and
worked on my
papers.
It is great for
collaborating
because its live
work.
I had used it
before and i still
believe it is
perfect for
students working
together.
i worked on my
papers and
researched
climate effects
on politics.
End I researched
about the ways
humans adapt to
climate change
rather than fixing
and helping the
problem, and
also documented
it on Google
Drive.
Google Drive is
great to
collaborate,
especially if you
are working
together at the
same time.
My feelings have
stayed the same
and I believe
Google Drive is
the perfect way
to collaborate
with lab partners.
I researched and
worked on the
adaptation of
humans on
climate change.
