Dear Horsemen:
Jim McKay Maryland Million Day is coming soon – October 23rd will be here before we know it. Laurel Park will be in the spotlight again, showing off the new track surfaces. But you and your horses as always are stars of our show. This annual celebration showcasing Maryland’s horse industry is all about the horses, the people, the businesses that support our sport. Your stories are told with the excitement and celebration in the winner’s circle when all of the hard works pays off.
Jim McKay Maryland Million Day is truly “Maryland’s Day at the races”, and since 1986 has paid out more than $36 million in purses and awards. It is important because much of that money is reinvested in the business when you breed to a Maryland stallion, buy a Maryland-sired horse or race at a Maryland track.
Maryland produces great horses and great people, and Jim McKay Maryland Million Day will give our industry the opportunity to shine especially after the year we have had. We look forward to great day that rewards our loyal fans and brings new people to Laurel Park to see some great racing.
Thank you for your support Jim McKay Maryland Million Day! We wish you the best of racing luck.

Joe Kelly
Unsung Hero Award
The ninth annual Unsung Hero Award will again be given this year in honor of Joe Kelly. Joe was the first and only publicist for the Jim McKay Maryland Million Day racing program. As a close friend of founder Jim McKay he was involved from the introduction of the concept in
1985 until his death in 2012. He was a mentor to writers, horsemen and fans alike, and loved our sport from his early days as a sports writer.
Joe Kelly embodied the character of the unsung hero. He was quiet and unassuming, and never sought personal attention or credit, yet was a role model for many. With this award his memory lives on, and is acknowledged annually on Jim McKay Maryland Million Day.
Your unsung hero candidate should embody characteristics that are valuable, but often go unrewarded. He or she should be honest, hardworking and humble. They should inspire and set a good example through their principles and actions.
To nominate your candidate you can request a nomination form by contacting the Maryland Million Ltd. office – either by phone, 410-252-2100 ext. 113, or e-mail [email protected] – or go to the Maryland Million website at MarylandMillion.com.
ELIGIBILITY:• Has demonstrated a particular
commitment, impact or contribution to the Thoroughbred industry or equine community in general
• Has been involved in the Thoroughbred industry in Maryland for at least five years
Nominations are due by October 1
SHOE RULES: FOR DIRT AND TURFA horse may not be permitted to start if it has shoes on the front hooves that:
(1) have toe grabs that are greater than 4 millimeters in height; or(2) Contain bends, jar calks, or any other traction device.
A horse participating in a turf race at Laurel Park or Pimlico Race Course may only use the following types of shoes: Flat, Queen’s Plate, Queen’s Plate XT, Silver Queen or Factory Wedge.
Go to www.mdhorsemen.com for the most up-to-date
