Chiang Mai to Golden triangle

SUMMARY

The north of Thailand is home to exotic hill tribes, lush landscapes and an intriguing history. This three day tour departs from Chiang Mai through Akha and Yao villages to the Golden Triangle where you will cruise along the Mekong River where it borders Laos and Myanmar. Along the way, visit historic temples, learn about the region’s history in opium trade and discover the rich Lanna culture of the north.

Length of trip: 3 Days / 2 Nights

Day 1 : Depart Chiang Mai and transfer (1.5 hrs) north to the picturesque, mountainous town of Chiang Dao where you can stop to stretch your legs and sample some locally grown Royal Project coffee by a small lake. Wander next door to the small Hmong hilltribe’s fresh fruit and vegetable market where Royal Project’s produces are sold. Continue your journey to Thaton (2 hrs) where you will have the opportunity to enjoy a lovely viewpoint from Thaton Temple before a relaxing local lunch by the majestic Kok River. From here, continue to travel north towards the Golden Triangle via Doi Mae Salong (1.5 hrs). Upon your approach to Mae Salong town passing tea plantations, you may notice a subtle change in architecture and be forgiven for thinking you have entered a small Chinese town. Notice the upward curb of the roof awnings and the sprinkling of red Chinese lanterns.

PROGRAM

Established just over 60 years ago, this Chinese Yunnanese town stretches over a 6000ft mountain ridge and was established as the home to the 5th Regiment of the lost 93rd division of the Chinese Nationalist army. Following the Chinese civil war, remnants of the anti-communist Kuo Ming Tang, refusing to surrender, escaped to Myanmar before seeking asylum in this small pocket of Northern Thailand. Continue to the Golden Triangle (1.5 hrs). Overnight in the Golden Triangle.

Day 2 : After breakfast, transfer to Mae Sai (25 min.) to the bustling trading town at the northernmost border between Thailand and Myanmar. This tiny area is a cultural melting pot of hilltribe minorities, Burmese, Thai and international travellers all crossing its borders! Return to Sop Ruak (25 mins), to see the point of the Golden Triangle where the Mekong River converges Laos, Myanmar and Thailand. Visit the Hall of Opium, an impressive and informative museum that documents the history of the area and details its links to the opium trade. Lunch at a local restaurant. From here, board a private ‘long-tail’ speed boat to explore the bordered area along the Mekong River and step onto Laotian territory on Don Sao Island. Disembark at the Ancient Kingdom of Chiang Saen and visit the magnificent ancient ruin of Wat Pasak before returning to Chiang Rai. Overnight in the Golden Triangle.

Day 3 : After breakfast, check out of your hotel and transfer (1.5 hrs) to Chiang Rai city to visit Wat Rong Khun, also known as the White Temple. This unconventional temple is unique from other temples in that it has been constructed entirely in a radiant white color with sparking reflections from mirrored glass mosaics embedded in the white plaster. The temple is the idea of Mr. Chalermchai Kositpipat, one of Thailand’s most renowned artists. Continue onwards to Chiang Rai airport for your departure flight.
