Principals ReportIt has been a very busy start to Term 4 with a variety of major activities and events. Term 3 concluded with the traditional Year 12 celebrations and Graduation Ceremony where we officially farewelled our 2017 Year 12 cohort. This week, those students commenced the HSC in our Concert Hall and by all accounts have started well. Our final function with Year 12 will be the annual Year 12 Formal in early November once the HSC concludes. Following on from the graduation process, last week we had the Investiture Ceremony for our incoming Captains and Prefects. This was a great event where a very talented and cohesive team of student leaders were recognised by the school. I am very much looking forward to working with them over the coming year.

As you may know, a major administration reform is being rolled out across NSW and this week, Tamworth High School along with all other public schools in this area went ‘live’ with the new LMBR Systems. Our focus has been on the financial management system which will enhance mechanisms for school budgeting and provide more convenient means by which parents can make payments for excursions and school fees etc. There are additional systems that will be linked to our existing SENTRAL system to ensure all aspects of student management and wellbeing are supported. We will be providing further information on new facilities and systems in coming weeks.

Prefect InvestitureLast Friday we had a large number of parents and guests attend the Prefect Investiture for 2018. At this assembly the Prefects for 2018 were presented with their badges in front of the school and the School Captains for 2018, Joshua McCulloch and Sophie McLeod read out the goals for the coming year. The big emphasis for the incoming prefects is a positive reward for correct uniform and to present a positive image to the larger school community. The motto for 2018 is:

“In our school community we strive for unity”

My thanks go to the following people, Jordann Barber and Daniel Wilson for chairing the event, Destiny Arnold and Danielle Fogg for delivering the Acknowledgement to Country, Breanne McFadyen and her Year 9 dance group

for providing an entertaining dance recital and also to Karen Nelson, Marg Foster-Spinks, Maree Black, Anne Orvad, Chelsea Roulstone, Bec Sullivan and Gina Ostle for their assistance in various tasks to make the day run as smoothly as possible.

I would also like to thank our canteen ladies, Yvonne Bryant and Terri Morris who provided an excellent morning tea for everyone at the commencement of the ceremony.

Acting Out!Theatresport CompetitionDuring the last week of Term 3, we held our Inaugural Primary School Theatresports Competition in the THS Concert Hall. We had teams from Dungowan PS, Timbumburi PS, Nundle PS, Wallabadah PS and Nemingah PS attend and participate in 3 rounds of drama games. The team from Timbumburi PS took home the ultimate prize on the day, champions of the THS Primary Schools Theatresports Competition for 2017.

A huge thank you to the THS Drama students who helped out and coached the teams on the day: Johannah Hohnke, Jack Pike, Shauny Kaluza, Tom McGrath, Jade Jacobsen, Kaylah Daly, Halen Godley, Georgia Holcombe and Tessi-Jane Walters.

State Dance FestivalIn May the New England Senior Regional Ensemble auditioned to be a part of the NSW Public Schools State Dance Festival. We were successful in gaining a spot on opening night. Kaylah Daly and Lucy Hofman were the two representatives from Tamworth High School. The State Dance Festival showcases the best public school dance groups from across the state. This year the festival’s theme was “HEART” – Honesty, Emotion, Artistry, Relationships and Trust. The festival showcased 1500 students’ hearts. Their hearts and minds transformed to produce some of the most breathtaking dances performed from kinder to year twelve.

This was a fantastic achievement as the Senior Ensemble was up against performing arts high schools and ensembles that train weekly, we had two rehearsals. Both Miss McFadyen and Miss Brown accompanied students on this journey, our girls were an absolute credit to Tamworth High School performing with such passion, grace and integrity. This is just an example that our students in regional rural areas can be exposed to opportunities and succeed at the same level as students in metropolitan areas. Well Done Lucy and Kaylah.

Something a bit different. . .Year 9 ACP ClassOn the morning of Tuesday October 17 the Year 9 ACP Class were unable to attend TAFE as normal. Instead they were organised into two work crews to work on the grounds and gardens here at THS.

The first crew, using only their hands and plastic buckets filled a 7’ by 4’ box trailer with aged mulch from the bulk bins adjacent the bus sheds. The trailer was then driven down to the new tree planting near the water tank. Two students stood in the trailer filling buckets while another two used buckets to mulch the little trees.

The second crew had the arduous task of chipping away at the scree left over from the water bore drilling. These students were using muscles they never knew they had, with crow bars, shovels and hoes flying. The big trailer was loaded up and then this crew patched up various potholes and washaways around the grounds.

Many thanks to Mr Usher and Ms Clare for their active involvement.
