Page 1: Preliminary Task - Evaluation

Evaluation

After considering and researching many media products from glamour to music I decided how I wanted my preliminary task magazine to look like. My aim was to design an appropriate student magazine suitable for teenagers at a college to read weekly.

I think my magazine front cover relates to a real life media product well. I have tried to design the layout and pictures similar to ones that I have seen in the world today, using big fonts and eye catching pictures. I used a presentable but readable font for my masthead as this suited the style I wanted to go for. I have kept the font smart and neat but at the same time made the writing look attractive. I have kept all of the fonts on my front cover and contents at a suitable size making it appropriate for students to read like the media today.

To make my magazine front cover and contents look as professional as possible I have colour co-ordinated it all, keeping the colours within white and a selection of blues. As these colours match the image in the centre of my contents as well this makes the cover look attractive and neat. To make some words more prominent that others I have also shaded them in darker blue to highlight the fact that they are important.

I think my media product represents social groups very well. I have a large picture on the front of my magazine product representing youth as it shows a young student. On my contents page I also have pictures of music and students to give the magazine more of a college feeling.

The kind of audience for my media product would definitely be young students and maybe training teachers. My media product could tell a wide range of information not just one section, which would therefore make the audience range wider.

I tried to attract the audience by making the front cover obvious in the sense that it was for students. By applying a student like picture in the centre frame and by advertising student and college news I aimed my magazine for students in college. Also by using fairly informal language and phrases the magazine aims better for students and teenagers.

Overall I have learnt a lot about the process of constructing a front cover of a magazine and the research I found at the beginning of my task has helped me a lot to think of new ideas for my later project. I now feel that I have a better knowledge on magazines and the kind of writing and styling needed to make your magazine attractive and popular.
