ENERGY STAR was created by the United States Departmentof Energy, to establish a program for evaluating the energyperformance of windows and their suitability for differentgeographic regions of the country. Windows must be tested tothe National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) standardsand be certified by an independent third party as meeting thethermal performance criteria set by ENERGY STAR. AllSeaway windows with low E glass meet and surpass thesecriteria and are ENERGYSTAR qualified in all 50 states. The ENERGY STAR labelproudly displayed on Seaway windows is your quick check for

ENERGY STAR and NFRC –Trust the ExpertsYour choice in new windows not only affects the architectural look of your home but hasa major impact on your energy usage and comfort. Evaluating the performance of awindow, taking into account the U value, SHGC, Visible Light and other factors can bevery complicated. Fortunately, there is a simplified approach to assure that you receivethe right, high quality, high performance window for your home.

NFRC was given the mission by the National Energy PolicyAct of 1992 to establish fair, accurate and reliable energyperformance ratings for windows and doors. NFRC certifiedwindows will have an NFRC label prominently displayed onthe glass, as well as a permanent marking on the window.NFRC label is your source for objective window performanceinformation. The same data can also be obtained online atwww.seawaymfg.com or at the NFRC website www.nfrc.org

Air Infiltration -Avoid the DraftsAll operating windows allow some air to pass around the seals of theoperating sashes. The lower the air infiltration rate, the less outside air isgetting past the seals and into your house. Excessive air infiltration can causedrafts, make a house uncomfortable, and increase your energy costs.

U Factor – Keep your home warmer in the winterU Factor measures how well a window insulates. The UFactor indicates how easily heat will flow through thewindow, whereas R Factor (used for insulation), indicates theopposite: how well the window will resist heat flow.Thelower the U Factor, the better a window insulates.

Visible Transmittance –Let the Light Shine inVisible Transmittance (VT) measures the amount of visiblelight transmitted through a window. VT is expressed as anumber between 0 and 1, where 1 would theoretically mean100% of visible light is transmitted. However, windowsregulate the light coming into the house. Theframingmaterials are not transparent and even clear glass blocks someof the light. In addition, spectrally selective glass coatingsdesigned to improve the U factor and SHGC by blockingultraviolet and infrared light block some visible light as well.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient – Block the Summer HeatSolar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) is the amount of solarradiation admitted through a window. SHGC is expressed as anumber between 0 and 1. The lower a window’s SHGC, theless solar heat is transmitted into the house and the easier itis to keep your house cool in summer. On the other hand, innorthern climates a higher SHGC can provide beneficialpassive solar heating in the winter.
