SBA in the HKDSESBA in the HKDSE

Typically contributes about 20% of subject marks

Assessment areas include outcomes which cannot be easily assessed through public examinations, e.g. laboratory work, project work, portfolios

Conducted in S5 and S6 by subject teachers during the course of learning and teaching

Implemented in 12 subjects in 2012 HKDSE, gradually extended to other subjects from 2014 onward

8

Some Guiding PrinciplesSome Guiding PrinciplesSBA a part of the public assessment in the HKDSE

SBA can assess skills / outcomes not included in public examinations

SBA integral to learning and teaching

A unified approach for all subjects, making reference to the best practices in CE / AL

EDB, HKEAA, schools and students all play a part in SBA implementation

9

SBA HandbooksSBA Handbooks

SBA requirements stipulated in SBA School Leaders’ Handbook and Teachers’ Handbooks for individual subjects (published in mid 2009)

Schools to submit marks in S5 and S6

HKEAA to moderate SBA marks, after schools submit S6 marks and samples of work in early 2012

Performance below Level 1 designated as ‘Unclassified’ and not reported on certificate

Category A subjectsStandards-referenced reporting to be adopted for all Category A subjects

Results reported in 5 levels, with 5 being the highest

Level descriptors and exemplars to illustrate typical performance of candidates at each level

Exemplars and level descriptors

Candidates’ actual performance

Exam statistics and feedback from markers

Recommendations derived from application of statistical models

For elective subjects, Group Ability Index (GAI) based on achievement of relevant candidates in the four core subjects to be used as reference

30

Standards MaintenanceStandards Maintenance

Standards held constant across years

Mapping cut scores of previous year to those of current year by means of test equating techniques using monitoring test results

Additional information provided to judge panels in 2013 and beyond:- library scripts - statistically-generated suggested cuts cores

based on monitoring test results
