The problem of disability in Egypt
10-15% of the population = 8 million have a
disable and 45% of the population are children
below 18 years old.
Late identification of their disability (long waiting
list – high coast – limited budget)
Inclusive services are very limited specially in the
mainstream system (Education – Labor – etc..)
Discrimination and gender discrimination toward
persons with disability especially women
(missing knowledge and awareness)
The problem of disability in Egypt
Lack of trained – motivated personal
Most of the limited services are available only
in big cities of the 26 governorate of Egypt.
Majority of persons with disability tend to be
excluded from the development process of
the country and they remain in poverty.
Egypt as religious community affected by the
charity approach rather then empowering
person with disability.
• There is a bright side and promising factors of this story
which are:
1. Egyptian communities specially in Rural and Slum areas
are willing to play role – if they told how? And if they
empowered?
2. Egypt had ratified UN convention of rights of persons with
disability – needs to be activated.
3. Many inclusive activities took place in the last 5 years on
the national level
4. There is two active net work in Egypt for C.B.R and
inclusion.
5. Egypt has a large number of civil societies and some of
them working in disability needs capacity building
