Tribute to Fr. Craig from the 8th Grade Class(Written by the 8th grade Christian Leadership class)

We would like to pay tribute and honor to our pastor, Fr. Craig. Fr. Craig has been the pastor of Sacred Heart for 14.5 years. Most of our 8th grade class is 14 years old, so Fr. Craig began at Sacred Heart when we were born. It is not surprise that Fr. Craig baptized many of us. In fact, if Fr. Craig baptized you, please raise your hand. If you received your First Communion from Fr. Craig, please raise your hand. How many of you have received the Sacrament of Reconciliation from Fr. Craig, raise your hand. You can see by the hands raised, that Fr. Craig has had a major impact on our spiritual lives. We are forever grateful to him.

We offer you now our thanks by giving specific examples to you, Fr. Craig, of how you have helped us embrace a life well lived in Jesus Christ. After each example is read, the response from the students and staff will be: “Thank you Father Craig.”

For always promising us your prayers…we say: “Thank you Fr. Craig”

For making us shout Alleluia loud and clear at Mass…we say: “Thank you Fr. Craig”

For your contagious laugh…we say: “Thank you Fr. Craig”

For blessing the animals every year we say; “Thank you Fr. Craig”

For shaving your head during one of our assemblies… we say…”Thank you Fr. Craig”

For listening intently during reconciliation and making us feel forgiven…we say…”Thank you Fr. Craig.”

For being joyful during the Consecration and teaching us the meaning of holiness…we say..”Thank you Fr. Craig

For your hot cross buns, homemade macaroni and all the dilly bars throughout the years. We say…”Thank you Fr. Craig”

For putting thought into your homilies and sometimes even bringing props…we say…”Thank you Fr. Craig”

For your repeated message of praying for vocations and for the reverant example you set when annointing the sick…we say…”Thank you Fr. Craig”

For saying Mass for us despite the times you have been in pain with your back..we say…”Thank you Fr. Craig”

For celebrating the Sacraments with our School and Parish and for teaching us what true stewardship is all about: Prayer, Hospitality, Service and Formation…we say..”Thank you Fr. Craig.”

Fr. Craig-You will never be forgotten. The influence you have had on Sacred Heart Parish and School will go down in history. We have a beautiful Church and school and we know that it was your hard work and vision that contributed to it. Most important, we know you care about us and we want you to know that we care about you. We send you the promise of our prayers as you head on to your next assignment.

Thank you Fr. Craig.

And all the People said…AMEN!

Special Guest Speaker: Sonia Warshawski-Holocaust Survivor

When Alex Brady, 4th grade, chose to do his speciality project on the Holocaust, little did he know that he would actually meet a Holocaust survivor. Well, that is exactly what happened. Alex heard that Sonia Warshawski, a Holocaust survivor, was speaking at a local high school and he asked his mom to take him. Alex showed Sonia his Holocaust book and she was so impressed with Alex that she agreed to come to Sacred Heart and speak. Her message was a powerful one of hope and love. She emphasized her loyalty to the United States, imploring our students to never take their freedom for granted. She said, “You were born and raised in the best country in the world. Use your brains and make opportunities. The biggest problem in our world is hate. Overcome hate. Love one another…Love life…Help each other.” Sonia Warshawski grew up in Miedzyrzec, Poland. She was 17 years old in 1942 when the Germans forced her and her family into the ghetto where she worked as a slave laborer. When the ghetto was liquidated, Sonia and her mother were deported to the Majdanek death camp. Her mother did not survive. Sonia was sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau and then to Bergen-Belsen where the British liberated her. At the Bergen Belsen displaced camp she met her husband John. The couple came to Kansas City in 1948. You can learn more about Sonia at: www.bigsonia.com

Cory Roshau, Jr. who is a member of Troop 34, Shawnee, Kansas, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout on September 18, 2014.For his Eagle Scout project he was in charge of building steps on Eagle Path at Sanctuary of Hope in Kansas City, Kansas. Sanctuary of Hope is a prayer and retreat center run by Fr. Dennis Wait.Cory Jr.’s Eagle Scout ceremony was held on May 17, 2015. During the ceremony, he presented mentor pins to those who meant the most to him in his life as he earned his way up the ranks to Eagle. One of the recipients of his mentor pins was Mary Beth Summers. Mrs. Summers was his Science teacher for two years and served as his mentor in the 8th Grade.

Ms.  Rajewski  says:

The  best  way  your  child  can  help  himself  or  herself  academically  is  to  read  for  fun  over  the  summer!    As  a  parent  if  you  could  help  them  set  aside  time  each  day  (even  just  10  minutes!),  that  helps  them  prioritize  reading,  which  can  be  hard  to  do  with  all  the  other  fun  available  –  video  games,  technology,  sports,  friend  time,  etc.  Please  help  them  have  high-‐interest  reading  material  in  their  hands.  The  better  the  reader  they  become,  the  more  they  can  apply  reading  skills  to  EVERY  subject.

Miss  Rajewski  and  Mrs.  Kelly  would  love  to  give  reading  recommendations!  We  also  encourage  using  audio  books,  e-‐books,  or  graphic  novels.  The  library  has  great  options  too.

Mrs. Kelly says:

Top recommendation---read a book (or more) a month, and keep a summer writing journal that captures how you spent your summer. Record vacations, thoughts, ideas, disappointments and successes. Visit your local library regularly, and participate in activities planned by the staff.

Improving a Volleyball through Engineeringby Abby Mauer

Engineers have a huge role in technology today. They make life easier for us by designing many things from buildings to cars to light bulbs. Engineers are people who are trained and skilled in the design, construction, and use of technologies in any branches of engineering. Engineers design technologies we use in sports today. A technology used in one of my favorite sports is a volleyball. In the game of volleyball, a ball is a simple yet important technology. Without the ball, the game could not be played, and without engineers the ball could not be made.In 1895, William G. Morgan linked together elements of basketball, baseball, handball, and tennis to create a new sport called volleyball. Back then, the volleyballs people played with were different than the ones used today. At first, people played with a rubber bladder from a basketball, but it wasn’t heavy enough and it moved slowly. Some people even tried to use the basketball itself, but that was way too heavy. Engineers were wondering how they could create the perfect volleyball that wasn’t too light, wouldn’t move too slowly, and wasn’t so heavy that players couldn’t get it up in the air. Finally, a solution was found. William G. Morgan approached a factory called A.G Spalding & Bros. in Massachusetts and asked for a special ball to be made for the game. In 1900, A.G Spalding & Bros. designed a ball consisting of three layers. The first layer was a latex bladder made from a bicycle tire, the middle layer was a cheesecloth material, and the last layer was the outer layer of the ball made from leather. This design worked well and was similar to the balls we use today. Have you ever wondered who designs high-tech volleyballs? Different types of engineers are involved in the process of designing a volleyball. Materials engineers who make volleyballs specialize in polymer engineering. Most volleyballs have bladders that are made out of a special rubber called butyl, which is prepared by polymerization. Another type of engineer who is involved with manufacturing volleyballs is a mechanical engineer. Mechanical engineers design the equipment used to manufacture volleyballs. Chemical engineers produce the chemicals needed in the volleyball material and bladder. Industrial engineers run the equipment used to manufacture volleyballs.A popular volleyball brand is Tachikara. When I play volleyball, I use Tachikara Volley-Lite® volleyballs. Volley-Lite® volleyballs were developed for youth, so that kids could easily get used the

sport with a light and soft ball that wouldn’t hurt their hands. Engineers designed the Volley- Lite® volleyball to help youth develop skills; it is 25% lighter than an adult ball. It was also designed with Sensi-Tec® micro fiber composite leather which features a resin-fused fiber cover to provide better control and a truer touch. Engineers developed Volley-Lite® volleyballs by lengthening, strengthening, and adding tackiness to the fibers in the material to create a higher quality ball. When developing this volleyball, engineers had to be aware of constraints. Materials engineers had to decide what materials they should use to make the volleyball just right. They may have discovered a material that was exceptional and worked well on the ball, but was expensive to manufacture. That would mean the retail price of the volleyballs would be expensive, and people might not want to pay a lot for a volleyball. Mechanical and industrial engineers had to face constraints when deciding what machines to run in the factory and when to run them. Different machines might produce more or less volleyballs. Chemical engineers faced constraints when deciding what chemicals would compose the different layers of the ball to be just right.Perhaps in the future, volleyballs could be manufactured out of recycled material. This would be beneficial for the environment and also not add to landfills. To reduce pollution, volleyball factories could run on something other than fossil fuels. Materials engineers for Tachikara volleyballs could develop a cheaper and more functional material so more people would purchase the balls. Environmental and ecological engineers could be involved in manufacturing volleyballs in the future.Engineers make it possible to play the sports we play today, especially in volleyball, by designing the ball used for the game. Engineers have improved volleyballs since the first one was manufactured in 1900, but they have had to face constraints when developing solutions. Just think of all that engineers have completed throughout the years. What could possibly come in the future?
