PRESS RELEASE FISH FACTORY ICELAND 31 MAY 2011 Q: What do the inhabitants of a small Icelandic fishing village and MA Communication Design students have in common? A: The belief that design has the power to change the world. A group of students from Central Saint Martins MA Communication Design are collaborating with an Icelandic design team to create a sustainable creative community centred on a former fish factory in Stodvarfjordur, East Iceland. Over the coming year the students will help create a website, a visual identity and publication to kick start the project, as well as record the process through visual diaries, documentary films and press articles. This is in preparation for a conference to be held 2011 with the theme ‘What difference does design and do designers make’. Rosa Valtingojer and Zdenek Patak from the company Mupimup – Recycled by Design, were invited to Central Saint Martins in February 2010 to speak to the MA Communication Design course as part of CSM’s Green Week. “We talk about it all the time” says student Cally Gatehouse, “how, as designers, we are capable of more than just making things look nice. So when we heard about the Fish Factory project we were really excited to get involved in a project that could put that idea into practice.” The fish factory had once been the heart of the thriving fishing industry in Stodvarfjordur but has stood empty for many years. It will now be transformed into the hub of village life. Valtingojer (who was raised in Stodvarfjordur) and Patak hope that this will attract young people and creative professionals to live in the village, which has seen large-scale depopulation over the past decade. With many other villages having disused fish factories, the centre can serve as a model for regeneration all over Iceland and beyond. The students are planning to visit the small town this summer. Course tutor Anne Odling-Smee highlights the importance of this trip: “The students need to remember that this is a real community we’re dealing with, this isn’t like branding a corporation, it needs an entirely different approach.” Unlike other attempts at cultural regeneration in the past the Creative Centre of East Iceland is community-led and relies upon Stodvarfjordur’s fantastic natural resources and craft traditions. MA Communication Design course director Patrick Roberts adds, “the first thing I ask when the students join the course is ‘Do you want to change the world?’ And the answer is a resounding ‘YES! It’s fantastic to see a group of people really enthusiastic about engaging with the pressing issues of the day.” Phase one of the Creative Centre project will be launched in summer 2012. Final completion of the project is expected 2016.
