Gas expansion units exploit the pressure difference between the natural gas pipeline and the distribution networks or consumers for extracting mechanical or electrical energy.Today gas expansion plants are the power plant type which exhibits the highest level of conversion efficiency for the generation of electricity. Depending on plant design, 80-90% of the additional fuel energy required for the Spilling expansion engine is converted to electricity. This means that fuel efficiency is far superior to that of the most modern gas and steam power plants. Gas expanders are extremely resource-saving in operation and contribute to the overall reduction of CO2 emissions. If waste heat for the preheating is used, the power generation can bring CO2 emissions nearly to zero. The volumetric control guarantees a high power yield due to consistently high efficiency levels over a wide operative range.

Expansion Turbines

Siemens integrally geared process-gas radial turbines enhance power supply in processes with off-gas or process gas as byproducts. A medium- to high-temperature gas can be used to drive a compressor or an electric generator directly, with no need for additional heat exchange or steam generation equipment. The Siemens STC-GT product line is the ideal solution for gas expansion within a number of chemical processes, and is designed according to both API 617 and API 672.

Hydrogen-cooled generators are used for rating up to 600 MVA for simple cycle, combined cycle and steam power plants. This increased capability is due to better heat transfer and lower density characteristics of hydrogen compared to air.Also, the generator is completely sealed and thus more appropriate in an environment that might have detrimental effects on an air-cooled generator.
