    Beginning in 1955, several financial

    institutions (Development FinanceInstitutions (DFIs) wereestablished

    DFIs - establishment of newindustrial projects as well as for

    expansion, diversification, andmodernization of existingindustrial enterprises.

    As on March 31, 2011, the Bank had a

    network of 816 Branches and 1372ATMs. The Bank's total business, duringFy 2010-11, reached Rs. 3,37,584

    Crore, Balance sheet reached Rs.2,53,377 Crore while it earned a netprofit of Rs. 1650 Crore (up by 60 %).

    IDBI Institutional Structure

    IDBI is governed by a Board of Directors and itsoperation is carried out under the

    supervision of the Chairman and ManagingDirector assisted by four Executive Directors

    and one Adviser. With its head office in Mumbai, IDBI has 43

    additional offices throughout India.

    As of November 1998, IDBI was structured into33 departments, which are organized into

    five groups to facilitate proper distribution ofresponsibility.

    Financial Resources:

    1. Share Capital: IDBI was formed with

    an authorization capital of Rs. 50 croreswhich was raised a no. of times.

    2. Borrowings: The bank is authorized to

    raise its resources through borrowingsfrom govt. of India, Reserve Bank ofIndia and other financial institutions.On

    march 31, 2003 the bank had borrowingsof rs. 41798 cror by way of bonds anddebentures.

    Objectives:

    The objectives of this institution are to create

    a principal institution for long term finance, tocoordinate the institutions working in this fieldfor planned development of industrial sector,to provide technical and administrative support

    to the industries and to conduct research anddevelopment activities for the benefit ofindustrial sector.

    It raises funds by way of market borrowing byway of bonds and deposits, borrowing fromGovt. and RBI, borrowing abroad in foreign

    currency and lines of credit.

    Functions -direct loans (rupee as well as foreign currency) to

    industrial undertakings as defined in the Act to financetheir new projects, expansion, modernisation etc.-soft loans for various purposes including modernisationand under equipment finance scheme-underwriting and direct subscription to

    shares/debentures of the industrial companies.-sanction of foreign currency loans for import ofequipment or capital goods.-short term working capital loans to the corporates for

    meeting their working capital requirements.-refinance to banks and other institutions against loansgranted by them.
