Economic Crises on Mass Media
Accumulated imbalances
The Spanish economy has accumulated important imbalances in the last few years:
1. An excessive private sector indebtedness: an excessive dependence on external finance
Households leverage in line with Euro Area standards (around 80% of GDP)
Companies leverage is high and concentrated on real state companies
2. The excessive private sector indebtedness: fuelled a real estate bubble
3. A loss of competitiveness until 2008 – reflected by the financing needs of the Spanish
economy
Correction in unit labour costs begins in 2008, due mainly to labour shedding
Improvement of competitiveness since 2009.
www.investincatalonia.com41
The Government’s Economic Policy
OBJECTIVE To tackle accumulated imbalances in order to regain asustainable and balanced-job creating growth pathover the medium term.
The Government Economic Policy response is base in these pillars:
Public sector reform: fiscal consolidation and debt discipline
 Structural reforms on:
• Labour market
• Financial sector
• Regulatory framework
Economic Crises on Mass Media
www.investincatalonia.com42
Current Economic data
Within the gloomy context, recent economic data shows positive trends, both in Spain
and Catalonia:
Catalonia’s GDP increased in 2011 from the previous year a 0.7%.
Industrial sectors grew at a higher pace, up to 1.7% from the previous year.
Catalan Exports have boomed during 2009-11, increasing by more than 30%.
Foreign companies have already done their post-crisis structural adjustments and
are committed in executing their investment plans.
Spanish productivity has increased up to 12% since 2008, thanks to its high export
levels and competitiveness improvements due to the drop in labour costs.
