OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE

At the end of the course the student should be able to:

- Use and properly name all the laboratory material - Comply with all safety standards and properly manage waste- Make dilutions stoichiometric calculations, obtaining concentrations,

etc..- Prepare solutions- Titrate correctly the solutions- Make qualitative and quantitative analysis using the proposed techniques to practice and interpret the results- Understand the separation technique of distillation- Schedule work to be done in the time available.

IN THE LABORATORY (I)

Mandatory use of:LAB COAT AND SAFETY GLASSES.Are necessary conditions for access to the laboratory

Required to have each session:For each student: LAB COAT, SAFETY GLASSES, LAB NOTEBOOK, GLOVES (NITRILE)By group: PERMANENT MARKER AND SPATULA

Timeliness at the entrance and exit. The entrance is at the appointed time. 30 minutes before departure time is ending the practice to go and wash and collect the material.It will list for each session.

IN THE LABORATORY (II)

The material must be in the metal cabinet in the laboratory.The specific material should be request to teachers.At the end of practice, the material will be cleaned and dried, and returned to where it was found.

IN THE LABORATORY (III)

2 groups responsible for cleaning the lab. for each session (see table of distribution of practice).

The group will:- Display cabinets and clean out of material.- Balances absolutely clean.- No material in balance area.- All the material will be collected in the metal cabinet, or be

returned to teachers.

- Fill all wash bottles with deionized water.Manage waste properly as directed by the teachers.

However, each group will be responsible for their own workspace.

LABORATORY SAFETY (I)

Read safety standards in the laboratory.Example: not smoking, not eating, not playing, do not wear contact lenses, wear her (or his) hair, not wearing open-toed shoes ...• Do not pipette by aspirating the liquid by mouth.• Read phrases R and S of the reactants.• Looking security pictograms reagents.• Wash hands before leaving the laboratory.

• In case of accident:STAYING CALM AND NOTIFY THE TEACHERS.

• In case of spills in the workplace, acids, bases and organic solvents:Add suitable absorbent (they are in the section of absorbent)

• Important to know the location of eyewash, shower, fire blankets and fire extinguishers.

LABORATORY SAFETY (III)Labelling of Chemicals (I):

The label is the first information received by the user and allows him to identify the product at the time of use, and protect against possible risks. A container containing a chemical should be obligatory (Royal Decree 374/2001 and EC Regulation 1272/2008), a clear label, clearly visible and indelible on the package and contain:• Provider ID (name person / s who have prepared.• Nominal amount (mass or volume).• Product identification (name substance or preparation, concentration and date of preparation).• Pictogram/es of danger.• Word / as warning (danger or care).• Indications of danger (phrase/s H and meaning).• Council / s of prudence (phrase/s P and meaning) for use.• Supplementary Information.

The classification of products was very different in each country, so that the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 established the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of classification and labeling of products.

In the European Union applies the rules derived CLP, ratified by Royal Decree 1802/2008 by the Spanish state. This is effective from 20/01/2009, with a transition period that runs from 12/01/2010 to 01/06/2015, from this date, all safety data sheets (MSDS) for substances and mixtures classified by the CLP regulation.

THE LAB BOOK

Upon entering the laboratory is necessary that the book contains:

Title and date of the practice is performed.

Objectives and rationale of the practice.

Flowchart and previous calculations.

Characteristics, and handling of hazardous products used.

Doubts about the practice.

In the next practice session must be stated in the book, in addition to the above:

Data collected in a clear (possible table) and always with units.

Results and calculations after making the practice of the previous session.

Discussion and analysis of results.

Observations and possible incidents.

THE LAB BOOK (II)Example flowchart:

Weigh 5 g of BaCl2 in beaker of 250 mL

Add 10 mL of water and stir

Add approx. 50 mL of 1M Na2CO3 , wait 5 min. observ.

Wash the precipitate with water and filtering also

Tared watch glass and weigh the precipitate in it

Bake in the oven at 175 ° C for 35-40 minutes

ASSESSMENT PRACTICES

Compulsory attendance. Unrealized practice will mean a grade of zero (0).

Be evaluated individually:• Advance preparation for practice in the book, with flow chart and information security products to be used. Calculations and conclusions. Laboratory work (50%).•Punctuality at the entrance to the laboratory, order and neatness (5%).•Test on the practices (45%).
