All-powerful Father, Christ your Son became man for us and was presented in the temple. May he free our hearts from sin and bring us into your presence. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY FEBRUARY 2, 2020
From the Pastor’s Desk
Philip Kosloski from Aleteia.com wrote this article on Kobe Bryant in April of 2016 for the blog. He repeated it recently in light of the terrible tragedy of the death of Kobe, his daughter and 7 friends who also perished. May they all rest in peace.
When the basketball great needed to move past his mistakes, a priest helped him. Last April, Kobe Bryant, one of the greatest athletes of all time, ended his 20-year basketball career with a bang, scoring 60 points in his last game. While Bryant’s stats can be recited by many — five-time NBA champion, two-time Olympic champion, 18-time All-Star and the third leading scorer in NBA history — few know about the role his Catholic faith played in helping him through one of his darkest hours.
Born in Philadelphia, Kobe Bryant was raised in a Catholic household and even spent some of his youth in Italy. Drafted into the NBA at the age of 17, he eventually married Vanessa Laine at St. Ed-ward Roman Catholic Church in Dana Point, California. Two years later they had their first child. Bry-ant was at the top of his game and everything seemed to be heading in the direction of his dreams.
Then he made a big mistake.
In 2003, Kobe Bryant was accused of raping a woman in his hotel room, while he was in Colorado for knee surgery. He admitted having sex with the woman but denied rape. A judge eventually dropped the charges, but the woman went on to file a civil lawsuit against Bryant that was settled out of court. In the midst of it all, he issued a public apology, stating that he was sincerely ashamed of what he had done. The incident had major consequences as numerous sponsors abandoned him and his reputation was tarnished. In 2011, his wife filed for divorce. Yet during one of the darkest moments of his life, Kobe Bryant turned to his Catholic faith. In an interview with GQ in 2015 he ex-plained:
“The one thing that really helped me during that process — I’m Catholic, I grew up Catholic, my kids are Catholic — was talking to a priest. It was actually kind of funny: He looks at me and says, ‘Did you do it?’ And I say, ‘Of course not.’ Then he asks, ‘Do you have a good lawyer?’ And I’m like, ‘Uh, yeah, he’s phenomenal.’ So then he just said, ‘Let it go. Move on. God’s not going to give you anything you can’t handle, and it’s in his hands now. This is something you can’t control. So let it go.’ And that was the turning point.” After some rough years, Kobe Bryant reconciled with his wife, and they re-main married to this day. Together they have founded the Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Family Founda-tion (KVBFF), which is dedicated to, among other things, helping young people in need, encouraging the development of physical and social skills through sports and assisting the homeless. Asked about this commitment in 2013, Bryant’s answer would likely have made Pope Francis very happy:
My career is winding down. At the end of my career, I don’t want to look back and just say, “Well, I had a successful career because I won so many championships and scored so many points.” There’s something else that you have to do with that. [The homelessness] issue is one that kind of gets pushed on the back burner because it’s easy to point the blame at those who are homeless and say, “Well, you made that bad decision. This is where you are. It’s your fault.” In life, we all make mistakes and to stand back and allow someone to live that way and kind of wash your hands of it … that’s not right.
Throughout all of his trials, and perhaps even in response to them, Bryant has realized that fame and fortune are nothing compared to the importance of faith and family. When everyone else in the world abandoned him, the Catholic Church was always there.
He may be an All-Star and NBA legend, but even superstars can use the foundational support of faith formation, and a good priest to turn to.

ONE MINUTE MEDITATIONS St. Blaise: Not much is known about his life, but it is certain that St. Blaise was the bishop of Sebaste in fourth-century Turkey, and that he was arrested for be-ing a Christian. On his way to jail, he healed a young boy who was choking on a fish bone. According to one legend, the boy’s mother also gave St. Blaise two candles in grati-tude. Refusing to deny his faith, the bishop was tor-tured and martyred by the local governor.
TODAY IS SCOUT SUNDAY Today, February 2, 2020 is Scout Sunday. It is the tradi-tional day to recognize the contributions of young peo-ple and adults to Scouting. Congratulations!

PRO LIFE CORNER Abortion and racism are both symptoms of a fundamental human error. The error is thinking that when someone stands in the way of our wants, we can justify getting that person out of our lives. Abortion and racism stem from the same poisonous root, selfishness.

HIS WORD TODAY By Rev. William J. Reilly
The Presentation of the Lord
“Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been re-vealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen Christ of the Lord. He came in the spirit into the temple and when the parents brought in the child Jesus…he took Him into his arms and blessed God…”
How many times have we been to the celebration of a baptism. As a child is presented to the Lord, he is not just baptized, but the same Lord who was in the temple for Sime-on, comes to the child and those present for this wonderful meeting.
Rather than attend and pray during the baptism, try to realize that there is new life being born before our eyes. The person becomes a dwelling place for God, to begin a life long journey as a disciple. He leaves the church a temple of the Spirit, who moved Simeon also to be there with Jesus’ parents. Rather than take Him into our arms, may we take Him into our hearts and pre-sent Him to the world in which we live.

SUNDAY TODAY: THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD - A Brief synopsis of the Sunday readings
First Reading: Malachi 3:1-4 The prophet Malachi speaks to us about God sending a messenger “to prepare the way” and that God will suddenly come and appear at the temple. Malachi continues by telling us the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to God.
Second Reading: Hebrews 2:14-18 Jesus became like us. He shared fully in our humanity. By his death he freed us from the fear of death. Because Jesus was tested by suffering, he is able to help those who are al-so tempted.
Gospel: Luke 2:22-40 According to the law of Moses, Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to the temple to be consecrated. They of-fered a sacrifice according to the law, “a pair of turtle doves or two young pigeons.” Simeon, a holy and righteous man, took the child into his arms and praised God. Simeon then spoke to Mary. He told Mary that Jesus “is destined to be the downfall and the rise of many in Israel.” Anna, a prophet of great age, praised God and spoke of the child who came for the redemption of Jerusalem.
