Preserving our environmental heritagefor future generations
Luther WilliamsonManaging Director
Johannesburg City Parks
Johannesburg's public parks are special places in people's lives. Families meet there forpicnics; weddings, birthday parties, neighbourhood get-togethers, fun fairs and more areheld within their boundaries. Many parks hold special memories for our citizens. However,as the needs of the people of Johannesburg change over time, so too, the parks must evolve.
Today, Johannesburg City Parks has expanded the capability and capacity of our parks tomeet the city's growing needs. Many of our flagship parks have been designed with eventsin mind: they have facilities for educational events, screenings, corporate events large andsmall, and commercial and movie filming, and stages for the entertainment that many busycity-dwellers seek. Above all, our parks, nature reserves and green belts represent greenlungs within an expanding urban landscape, a place to relax and enjoy nature.
We bring you the Johannesburg City Parks Events Brochure to highlight our evolution overthe past years. Our Events department has expanded to reflect the greater demand forservices and locations, and key parks suitable for events are highlighted here.
We welcome all - individuals, groups and organisational customers - to visit and enjoy ourparks. These special places are for now and the future - creating new images that peoplewill remember throughout their lives.

Johannesburg is one of the fastest-growing cities on the African continent. The population and numberof cars have doubled in the past decade with housing complexes mushrooming across once empty veld. With this phenomenal economic growth, the demands of Johannesburg's citizens are growing: betterservices, more options, thinking for the future, and above all, places to get away from the hustle. And withthis expansion, parks, nature reserves and green belts become increasingly important places in people's lives.
Johannesburg City Parks recognises the progression in the city's expansion and its implications for the future. Our parks have grown from 14 000 to 22 000 hectares in the past eight years; more than 20 000 hectaresof green belt and wetlands are being preserved.
At the heart of our parks are events. Most people can remember significant events of their lives taking placein a park, whether it was a wedding, a party, a family picnic, a company event or even the filming of a localmovie. We have developed careful policies and processes to protect our environmental heritage.
As we build our world-class African city and prepare Johannesburg for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Soccer, our parks are and remain important spaces for people to enjoy life.

MOFOLO PARK
The drum-roll started, the envelope was opened, and when theannouncement was made for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, SouthAfricans danced in the streets and blew their vuvuzelas. Nowherewas excitement greater than in Soweto, which will host theopening and closing ceremonies of the tournament.
In line with the City of Johannesburg's greater development,Johannesburg City Parks has invested substantial time and fundsto develop the parks of Soweto - and not just the parks. Thereare also thousands of new trees in the green belts, on the roadislands and along the streets. Our vision is to show a green Sowetoto the world, and Mofolo Park is part of that vision.
Johannesburg offers several parks with specially designed eventscapacity in the rapidly developing heart of Soweto. Mofolo Parkcan accommodate more than 1 000 people with a stage andscreening area, and can handle a variety of events. More than a century ago the land of Zoo Lake was bequeathed to the
City of Johannesburg for public use by a generous patron. Since that time,
Zoo Lake has become an oasis in the midst of growing urban sprawl.
Bands play on the bandstand, and the shores of this lake are still a favourite
spot for picnics.

KLIPRIVIERSBERGThis 644-hectare nature reserve is sandwiched between growing developments on either side. Fewplaces show more significantly the need to protect the city's natural spaces than Klipriviersberg.
This rambling reserve is the site of the Sarel Marais historical farmhouse, and hosts an educationalfacility and wide open space for events. Paths feature throughout, and wild animals such as blesbok, zebra and duiker can be seen, and the Bloubosspruit meanders through the middle of the reserve.
For those seeking a wild, natural setting within the city, Klipriviersberg is an appropriate venue forphotography, small corporate or other events, or the filming of commercials.
In the outlying suburbs near Little Falls, new townhouse complexes are changing the face ofJohannesburg. And with this development comes an increasing need for green spaces and recreationfor city-dwellers.
Wilgeheuwel was created in one day: the foundations laid, the trees planted, and the equipment broughtin as part of the 'Extreme Park Makeover' to bring new environmental zones to busy developments.
The space is ideal for small corporate events, filming and photography, and is a wonderful wayto see people at play in the suburbs.

Ivory Park is a winner, in many more ways than one. In 2007, the UnitedNations honoured Johannesburg City Parks with the Liveable Communities(LivCom) Award. Ivory Park, surrounded by informal settlements, amazedthe judges, who could not believe that Johannesburg had created afirst-class park in the poorest of poor areas.
Yet Ivory Park is the winner for its residents, who, in the years ofapartheid, never experienced the joy of open green space. And whata space this is. Ivory Park is built with events in mind - big open spacesfor gatherings and screenings, amenities for corporate events. It is apark that is built for people.

Since 2005, hundreds of trees have been planted in Alexandra, a townshipwhere Nelson Mandela once lived. The informal settlements of Alex werebuilt along the Jukskei River, which in times of flood was famous forsweeping away residents' houses.
Today the park breathes new life into Alexandra, providing a place forchildren to play, and bringing order to the river's banks. This green spacegives township residents a place of relaxation and recreation.
Jukskei River Park is suitable for events of 250 - 500 people, and canhandle filming of commercials, large and small corporate events, exhibitionsand photography.
