2.2. SPIE Member Roster We are an OSA/SPIE chapter which Works within the Engineering Faculty of the University, at the

momento, all of our members belong to the Physics Engineering program, and to two research

groups of the University: Group of Plasma, Laser and Applications (GPLA) and Group of Astro-

engineering Alpha Orion (GIA αOrion). Most of the activities are attended by the students of the

Engineering programs, teachers and staff, however, active paying SPIE members are

3. Academics

3.1. Science Forum Science Forum is a space where some of the more experienced teachers in the physics department

accepted the Chapter’s invitation to share time and knowledge with us. In the First semester of 2016

two open forums were held about the most relevant characteristics of quantum theory, its

background and future, between laughter and jokes they also shared with the attendees their

experiences in academia. This is an opportunity for teachers to interact with students outside the

classroom, emphasizing the details they want to and not the ones dictated by the curriculum. The

auditorium was completely filled with students, about 100 people participated in the forum

activities.

3.2. Specialized Topic Talk

The Specialized Talk is a monthly event that the senior year undergraduate students

prepare. Three topics in each talk were presented in the first academic term of the year,

involving the study of electrodynamics, optics and optic properties of new materials that

are advances in their respective graduation project research, it helps the speakers to

prepare for their professional future and presentations at events. The Chapter provided

coffee and cookies for these activities and we encouraged for everyone to bring their own

coffee cup to decrease plastic cups garbage.

Undergraduate Physics Engineering Student Johan Sebastian Duque talked about

dispersión of light by coloidal nanoparticles.

One highlight about this cycle was the videoconference talk of the graduate student Camilo

Moreno, who explained his undergraduate work based on the interference of light. Besides,

he talked with the members about the opportunities of study abroad and the requirements

and procedures to apply to scholarships. Some ideas came out of this talk for the Chapter’s

activities, as the study sessions, discussed in section 6.

3.3. Traveling Lecturer One of the central activities of this term was the public talk of the Traveling Lecturer Ph.D. Jonathan

Arenberg. During his visit two talks were scheduled, a morning one that was directed to the

University’s students, teachers, researchers and chapter members, and another one in the evening

one open to the local general public. The first session was held in the morning with an assistance of

70 people, and the second was attended by over 320 people, which included students, parents,

teachers, children, families and general public. In its talks, Dr. Arenberg, who works at the NASA’s

James Webb Space Telescope, shared the planning and developing experience of the project. We

shared great moments as a coffee break, a dinner and lunch with him, but the attendees learned a

lot about this great mission that NASA is developing. This rewarding academic activity was held

within the science and astronomy outreach event Night of the Stars. This event is one of the most

important of the region, and the SPIE & OSA Student Chapter CIOR is proud to participate as sponsor

and active LOC member.

Webb Space Telescope project, design and development.

3.4. Conferences attended

3.4.1. OSA Frontiers in Optics/Laser Science 2015 One chapter member attended OSA’s Frontiers in Optics/Laser Science conference in San Jose,

California. Officer and representative, Luisa Cardona presented during the Student Leadership

Meeting to other student chapters a poster about the developing activities. Some other Colombian

representatives were there and networking opportunities allowed the formation of links between

chapters which will strengthen individual and cooperative activities.

in San Jose – California.

3.4.2. XIV ENCUENTRO NACIONAL DE ÓPTICA V CONFERENCIA ANDINA Y DEL

CARIBE EN ÓPTICA Y SUS APLICACIONES. ENO - CANCOA 2015 Two chapter members, an officer and a recent graduated student atended the National Optics

Meeting (ENO) and Andean and Caribean Conference in Optics and its Applications (CANCOA) in

November 2015, in a neighboring city, Cali. Johan Sebastian Duque and Leonardo Lopez presented

the work “Análisis UV-Vis de nanopartículas metálicas crecidas en ambiente líquido mediante PLD”

and were awarded the Second Positon for it, an important recognition, given that both were

undergraduate students at the time. SPIE Vice president Glen Boreman granted this award at the

meeting. This event was co-organized and sponsored by SPIE OSA’s Student Chapter CUVO, and

networking opportunities were presented.

CANCOA Meeting in Cali, Colombia 2015.

4. SOCIAL

4.1. Gymkhana óptica A very attractive and fun activity was developed during the Physics Engineering

Week, where students would make groups and compete in physical didactic

activities. Gymkhana is a competition where contestants have to go through a set of

tasks and obstacles within a path, the winner is the team which manages to complete

the circuit first. Our Gymkhana has a soapy track, coastal jump (tied legs) and an

optics/physics question at the end, then the team member had to run uphill and the

next one began the track. The winning team received some awards and, as a result,

7 new members joined the OSA SPIE Student Chapter.

4.2. Social activities with Traveling Lecturer Dr. Jonathan Arenberg The chapter members shared pleasant moments with our guest. One of them was a

delicious Colombian coffee in the morning, after the morning talk, where we

discussed various topics and got to know Dr. Arenberg better. Some of the topics

were details about the project exposed in the talk, engineering difficulties, studying

options, working in industry, team working, among other topics.

brand Juan Valdéz coffee shop.

The second social moment with the Traveling Lecturer guest was the tour through

the University’s campus, specially to the working spaces and laboratories of the

research groups associated with the student chapter, and the lunch we shared with

him, offering a taste of Colombian gastronomy and sharing stories.

5. Outreach

5.1. Optics at school The communication of knowledge is a very important factor in career development

and the last term 6 of our chapter members visited a small rural elementary school.

The 4th of May the team went to Filandia, in the neighbouring state of Quindío, to the

school named “El Vigilante”. Each member was assigned an experiment from the

Optics Suitcase, in addition to some simple experiments built by some chapter

members. There is a single teacher for all grades, so we explained the experiments

to all the children at the school. The greatest challenge of this activity was to

transform the explanations to suit such a young audience, as we are used to explain

physical phenomena with more advanced terms. There were in total 47 children

between ages 6 and 11. The children’s response to the demonstrations was

rewarding. At the end, we gifted some of the demonstrations samples to the visited

school.

5.2. Night of the Stars 2015 and 2016 Night of the Stars is the biggest and most important local event CIOR participated in. In November

2015 and August 2016 Night of the Stars has gathered over 3300 people around science, mainly

astronomy, but also robotics, optics and physics. Some of the global activities of the event were:

hydraulic rocket building and launching, telescopes observation, planetarium functions, robotics

workshop, puppet show for children, talks, among others. The student chapter collaborated with a

talk, with the Traveling Lecturer benefit, an experiments exhibition, and economical support to the

whole event.

The special guest Dr. Jonathan Arenberg, chief systems engineer of the James Webb Space

Telescope project, shared the program outlines, challenges and expectations with 30 attendees to

the talk. And in Night of the Stars 2015 an experiments room was set up, where people would make

a circuit around the experiments, learning and enjoying the possibilities of light.

6. New Plans for 2016-2017

6.1. Study Sessions We are planning study sessions with two main focus: First, junior years students who need guide

through their subjects can work side by side with senior year students, which can recommend

exercises, books, and lectures. Second, senior year students preparing for graduate school entrance

exams with mock tests and recommended readings.

6.2. New strategies for members recruitment Chapter officers are currently designing new strategies for members recruitment as our university

is small and previous campaigns have resulted in some new members, but not in the continuity of

all of them in the chapters activities.
