PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
EAT BETTER,
SWIM FASTER,
GROW STRONGER
February was a particularly brisk month for our F&B outlets, especially Jade Phoenix. The restaurant was fully booked every evening throughout the Lunar New Year period. In addition, about 1,500 members and family turned up for our Lunar New Year’s Eve dining arrangement at the Grand Ballroom, making it our biggest feasting event in recent times.
I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the staff , and above all, Chinese staff who sacrifi ced their New Year’s Eve for work. You guys did a wonderful yeoman job in serving our members these two weeks!
Jackson Miller, our casual semi-fi ne dining restaurant, had a good showing as well. Its Valentine’s Day promotion did fantastically well. Also full house! Thanks to the many who have called in for reservation. To those who managed to be seated, I hope you have spent a nice, romantic evening with your loved ones.
On to the next occasion that celebrates another form of love, both the Chinese and Western dining restaurants are each rolling out a special menu for Mother’s Day (Pages 28 & 29 respectively) to suit diff erent palates. So, come to the Club to honour motherhood with these delicious culinary treats!
The Management Committee as well as the Club’s management and staff were delighted to see many repeat customers at our various F&B outlets. Your constant patronage is a clear testament of the quality of our food. To those, including new members, who have not yet dined at the Club, we urge you to give it a try. When you are here, ask our friendly waiting staff for the respective outlets’ signature dishes.
Tasty chow should be coupled with regular exercise for good health. The Club off ers many sports and swim activities that cater to diff erent demographics. Our cover story (Pages 16 – 19) is on competitive swimming for children and young adults. Parents sometimes wonder about the benefi ts of taking part in swimming competitions. Extensive research has long validated the value of competitive sports, notably for those still in their formative years. The article examines the physio-emotional gains from swimming competitively and features the Club’s various activities that provide our young swimmers the platforms to reach for gold.
You might have noticed a Member’s Survey form that accompanies this issue of SPLASH. Yes, we appreciate your honest views on our facilities, and welcome fresh and creative ideas for our events and activities, so we can continually review and tune up our works to create higher value for you and grow from strength to strength.

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE
MOTHER OF MINE
These days many young (and some not so young) ladies who follow the Korean pop culture trend draw and fi ll in their eyebrows straight, hoping to imitate the looks of their pop idols. Even men groom their eyebrows. This is a fad just as the older generation had their fair share of such frenzy in their younger days. Some of us would remember the heyday of Agnes Chan, the dainty guitar strumming Hong Kong singer with two outcrop teeth. Her sweetie pie image inspired many young Asian ladies to dress in her signature miniskirt with knee-high white stockings. Remember that? Good, you are of my generation then. However, what did not fade into history was her rendition of ‘Mother of Mine’. The ballad that brought tears to many of her fans as they
were reminded of their mother who, as the lyrics of the song goes “you showed me the right way things had to be done…Mother you gave me happiness…”
Yes, mother is that wonder woman who takes on multiple roles – co-bread winner, walking ATM, housekeeper, cook, teacher, nurse, chauff eur, fi nancial planner, aunt agony and best friend. It is no wonder we set aside the second Sunday in May every year to celebrate Mother’s Day. Who says mother has to be defi ned by gender? Your mentor, guardian and basically anyone who mothers you and gives you happiness should be celebrated on this occasion as well.
On Mother’s Day this year (8 May), you have several choices and diff erent venues for your celebration. You could dine in style on our special Mother’s Day menu at the Jade Phoenix restaurant (Page 28) or have a quiet elegant lunch with your mother at Jackson Miller (Page 29). I suggest you indulge in an epicurean adventure of a diff erent kind with your mother. Try out authentic Indian cuisine at The Palms prepared by our Indian Cuisine Head Chef N.Y. Ali and his two assistants.
Chef Ali from Manipur, India, has 35 years of culinary experience, having worked in top restaurants in 16 countries, including Indonesia, Mainland China and Hong Kong, Nepal and South Korea. It’s no wonder many of our Indian members give the thumbs-up for his fragrant mouth-watering dishes (Pages 20 & 21). It has to be good when his countrymen say so. Be bold and sink your teeth into Chef Ali’s signature dishes – Chilli Fish, Tandoori Pomfret, Chicken Tikka (Page 22) as well as Caulifl ower and Potato Curry, prepared with tender loving care. Even the humble caulifl ower is elevated to new heights with Chef Ali’s culinary skills. After dinner, hop over to D’Tanjong and enjoy a slow dance or two with your mother as our DJ spins the music to keep in tempo with the mood of the night. Otherwise, sit back, relax and delight in simply being your mother’s child again. Remember, mother knows best and you are always her child no matter your age. The dinner and dance could be just the prelude. Give her your time and a listening ear and it would be your best Mother’s Day present to her.
Happy Mother’s Day!

SWIM
COMPETITIVE SWIMMING
Extensive research has long validated the value of competitive swimming for children and young adults. Besides the obvious physical benefi ts, competitive swimming also engages the mind and strengthens emotional resilience, in those in their formative years.
The competitive swimmer is constantly challenged intellectually. He learns to set goals, develops and plans movement sequences, and explores new ideas to skill up. For even greater progress and better results, he must learn about nutritionand his own body cycle.
Through the rigours of training for competition, the competitive swimmer learns self-discipline, time management and to straddle tasks. He learns to handle pressure, sometimes from others and sometimes self-imposed. He learns
sportsmanship and how to deal with the stresses of winning and losing. Winning builds confi dence and losing breeds humility, and so he learns that excellence can be continually sought.
The competitive swimmer picks up these affi rmative attitudes, habits, skills and personality traits that will remain with him for life. Competitive swimmers learn to become “can do” people.
And in the course of training, the competitive swimmer builds camaraderie and forges tight relationship with his teammates, many of whom become friends for life.
Participants psyching themselves upbefore competition.
