PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Heart-ware, hardware & software

O n 10 April 1989, a young lady strode, with a mixture of apprehension and anticipation, into the Club. It was her fi rst day of work, hence the butterfl ies in her stomach. With aspirations to embark on a career in the service industry, she had successfully applied for a junior position with F&B in SSC.

That was Agnes Chew’s fi rst day with us in the Club. Over the years, with her good work ethic and warm service, Agnes rose through the ranks and currently, she is our Manager at The Palms.

Some of you may already know Agnes. She has been serving the Club faithfully for many years. 25 years, or a quarter-of-a-century, to be exact. What makes this all the more noteworthy and commendable, is that this has been Agnes’ fi rst job till now.

Agnes is what you may term, the “heart-ware” of the Club, serving members from the heart and exemplifying the service-ethic of our staff in the club, where the people make the difference. Agnes is a most-deserved recipient of SSC’s Long Service Award. We will present the award to her, together with other long-service staff, like Anwari Annoor and Tan Im Im, at this year’s SSC Annual Staff Dinner & Dance.

The Club has undergone many major renovations and refurbishments over the years. We have just celebrated the grand reopening of The Cabana in late September, and we plan to open the Deli Cabana in the middle of October. So SSC also has the “hardware”, meaning we have a very good set of infrastructure and state-of-the-art facilities, ready to be used and fully enjoyed by members.

But as you know, hardware needs to be complemented by software. Without software, an expensive hardware system is just an “empty shell”, devoid of life and is futile. To illustrate, what’s a spanking ballroom without a dance party? Or a newly opened Cabana without activities like the Oktoberfest?

Hence, we have rolled out many interesting activities

(ie. the “software”) for our members. In September alone, we have organised the Social Dance Night, Bollywood Night, Mid-Autumn Festival, to name a few. Response has been good. But we would like more participation from members. By doing so, not only do we get to enjoy ourselves, we will also get to know new members, catch up with old friends and build camaraderie among ourselves in the Club. After all, that was the original intention of our founding members – to have a Club where we can enjoy fraternal bonhomie and feel completely at home.

On the swimming front, Malcolm Low, Chloe Wang and Chantal Liew, have done us proud at the Singapore National Swimming Championships, by bagging several medals.

Sports is able to build character, sharpen mental focus and develop soft skills, such as leadership and team-work. Hence, I am delighted that members are encouraging their children to participate in the Club’s various range of swimming and sporting activities.

On a fi nal note, I would like to once again express our deep appreciation to our long-service staff. They are indeed the backbone of this Club. I wish our colleagues at SSC a very enjoyable Dinner & Dance.

The mistakes we make

We all make mistakes. Some mistakes are salvageable and can be forgiven, while others are funny and unforgettable. A man on his business trip had just arrived at his destination. Enthralled by the city’s exciting night life, he text his wife: “I am having a wonderful time. Wish you were her.” He missed the letter “e” in “here”. He learned too late, on his return, how a missing letter to a word can be so devastating, as he tucked into his sleeping bag in the living room for the night, until his wife was convinced with his explanation.

In our last issue of Splash, some of you had spotted the mistakes we made, and brought it to our attention. We thank you for that. It is heartening to know that we do have an audience, eager to read what we write. And yes, we learn too how we should never let our guard down, even when doing something we are very familiar with. While some of you may have chuckled over those seemingly silly and careless mistakes, the editorial team takes responsibility and we apologise for that. As the great playwright George Bernard Shaw said “Success does not consist in never making mistakes but in never making the same one a second time”. We shall learn from our mistakes and endeavour not to repeat them.

Sometimes, we make mistakes, because we are complacent. Other times, we make mistakes, simply because we do not know they were mistakes in the fi rst place. A member recently attempted to book the use of a facility using another member’s account. Our staff was chided by this member, when he sought to verify her membership card. The member also refused to allow our staff to seek verifi cation with the actual account holder whom she attempted to use for the booking. The member insisted that this had been done in the past and she had never encountered any objections or problems in doing this. Well, if it did happen in the past as what this member claimed, then it is a mistake that should never had happened. And to fall back on past mistakes not

rectifi ed, as justifi cation to perpetuate the same mistake, is certainly not acceptable.

The need to show your membership card is a common practice. This protects your interests and privileges. Sadly, there are members who do not carry their membership cards, and this could very well lead to complications when making transactions, and in some cases, even compromise our security.

Very often, when our staff ask for the membership card at the point of transaction, some members wave that request away and insist the staff charge the amount to the account number they give verbally. This can easily lead to abuse of the system. Or an innocent mistake on the member’s recollection of his account number could lead to another member’s account being charged. Hence, the onus is on the member to present their membership card at the point of transaction, as this is a fundamental requirement. Members, should also in their own interest, treat all transactions in the Club like they would with any transactions outside, where they would cross-check the items and amount before signing the chit. We seek members’ understanding and cooperation to observe the Club Rules and Bye-Laws and do what members of premier clubs do – carry your membership card with you whenever you visit the Club. Show it with aplomb as you relish the privilege of being an exclusive member of the Singapore Swimming Club.

EVENT REVIEW

7SPLASH october / november 2014

T he Club hosted the Thank You & Welcome Dinner on 1 August, in appreciation of the service rendered by Term 2013/14 outgoing members of the Management Committee, Sub-Committees, Ad hoc Committees, Panels and Volunteers; and to introduce the New Members for Term 2014/15.

The Dinner was well attended by more than 120 members. A few former Presidents and previous Vice-Presidents, who were in town, also graced the evening. As everyone tucked into the sumptuous buffet, the smooth vocals and witty chatter by Emcee Dazzling and harmonious multi-racial guzheng performance by Faizal, provided much entertainment to the diners.

Development (DC 612) Chairman, William Lum, was pleasantly surprised when we wheeled out a cake and sang him a birthday song.

Club President Chua Hoe Sing expressed his appreciation to members, for coming forward to serve and warmly welcomed the new members. The Club had gone through many milestones to arrive at where we are today, due to the passionate service and dedicated efforts by members, who sacrifi ced much of their time. President Chua presented outgoing members with a token of appreciation and a certifi cate for their term of service.

L anterns come in all shapes and sizes, from the traditional paper lanterns to infl atable electric versions, in a myriad of cartoon characters. As the Mid-Autumn festival was around the corner, we thought why not teach children how to do up their very own one-of-a-kind lantern, instead of buying them off the shelves?

Magic Art introduced to us apopular USA-made 100% bio-degradable natural corn starch material, which comes in multiple colours. When moistened gently with water, these Styrofoam-like bullets attach easily to each other to form shapes of varying sizes.

The children enjoyed themselves using their creative juices, to create endless possibilities for their lanterns. To me, it was a refreshing change from seeing children otherwise engrossed in their electronic gadgets!

Do take note of the upcoming kiddie handicraft workshops. Email [email protected] to fi nd out more.

T he Club was fi lled with red and white, as members dressed themselves in our national colours with pride. Yes, it’s that all-too-familiar feeling – it’s time to celebrate our Nation’s 49th Birthday!

Both children and adults were entertained with performances at the Cabana stage. Willie the street juggler mesmerised children with his smooth diablo juggling act and Yo-Yo tricks. Mr Egg brought back the magic of ventriloquism with his puppet, Lucky the Dog, which had the children giggling in stitches. Marvel Superhero Iron Man was another hit, with many queuing up for a photo-taking opportunity.

What’s a celebration without food? Members were treated with crowd-favourites, like churros, ice cream and popcorn. The game stalls proved very popular, especially the “Throw Cans” and “Can Toss” booths, where good hand-eye coordination is required!

At sunset, members sat back to relax in front of the big screen to watch the live telecast of the National Day Parade at Marina Bay. It was a great day and a great way to celebrate Singapore’s 49th Birthday.

Mid-Autumn Festival: 6 September

In the light of the moonby JULIET SEAH

Members and guests came early to join us for our Mid-Autumn Festival celebration. Stage activities, especially the magic show, games and the “The Legendary Bosco Fire Show”, was the hit of the evening! Booths such as Spin the Wheel, Hook It, Space Ball and Mooncake Making, were also very well-received. On top of this, our lantern sales were way above expectations.

To mark off the celebrations, complimentary bags of popcorns were given away to members and guests, for every carnival coupon purchased. During our lucky draw segment, three lucky winners walked off with a box of mouth-watering mooncakes each.

The moonlit night ended off with the Chang Er lantern procession, around the Club. It was defi nitely a pleasant and fun fi lled evening for all!

Visit to Eunos CareHut: 10 September

Reaching out with societyby DORINN CHIN

T he Social Department event executives spent a meaningful and fulfi lling afternoon at Eunos CareHut with 28 children, aged 7 to 11. It’s the September school holidays and the children were brimming with anticipation, as we rolled in with our cartons of Perler beads, peg boards and equipment. After a brief introduction, the children started enthusiastically on the task ahead: making Christmas themed ornaments. Ms Joyce Chan, our Lifestyle Chairlady, brought help, in the form of her seven-year old son along as well. We were grateful for the extra pair of hands, as the children picked up the technique faster than we thought, and we were soon swarmed with peg boards waiting to be ironed and sealed.

The children were able to select and keep an ornament of their choice as long as they submit one Christmas themed ornament. Some were eager to help, producing as many as seven pieces in the short time frame. The evening ended in a boisterous game of Dog’N’Bone (amidst delighted squeals), and we gave out goodie bags of cookies, candies and stationery to all the children for their participation.

Do something warm and meaningful this upcoming festive season, as we lend a hand to children from less than privileged backgrounds. These handmade Christmas tree ornaments will be launched on 22 November, Saturday at our annual Christmas Light-Up, and will be up for sale in the Club for the month of December leading up to Christmas Eve. With every purchase of a handmade beads art ornament, you will receive a card where you can pen your wishes and have it placed on our tree. All proceeds will be donated to Care Community Services Society, to help fund their children services.

Singapore National Swimming Championships:2 & 3 August

Making wavesby CONDREY LIU

T he Singapore National Swimming Championships (Short Course Meters) was held in OCBC Aquatic Centre on 2 and 3 August. This was a selection meet for the FINA World Cup Series held towards the end of the year.

Singapore Swimming Club had 11 representatives at this two-day event. Of the total number of 41 swims, 29 were new personal best times, amounting to a respectable 71% fi gure. The meet was organised in a heats and fi nals format. Out of 11 swimmers, 9 made it to the evening’s fi nals.

Malcolm Low struck gold in the Men 200m Backstroke event, breaking the record. He won silver medals in the 200 and 400m Individual Medley. Chloe Wang won two silver medals in the Women 400 and 800m freestyle. Chantal Liew won 5 bronze medals in the Women 400 and 800m freestyle, 50, 100 and 200m backstroke.

Our other representatives were Melissa Chan, Ashley Khoo, Dana Leong, Ethan Lim, Alicia Sim, Brandon Tan, Nadine Staes-Polet and Kathlyn Yeo.

Congratulations to all our swimmers who performed admirably, as it is never an easy task to compete at the National Level!

T he largest club swimming event of the year, the 115th

Open Swimming Championships, was held on 27, 29 & 30 August. Opened to all members, this meet offered open category events, where swimmers would compete against others regardless of age groups.

Swimmers who competed in the competition represented either the President’s team or the Vice President’s team, to score points for the Challenge Trophy.

Due to bad weather, some of the events planned for Friday had to be postponed to Saturday. However, our swimmers took things in their stride and continued to produce excellent results.

As part of tradition, there was a parent and child relay which was highly anticipated. The bronze medal went to Lee Jin Rae and his father, with Elliot Lim and his father taking the silver medal. The gold medal was deservedly won by young Aaron Choo and his father.

The team relays were the last events to be swum. At that point, the team scores between the President and Vice President teams were extremely close, well within a hundred points of each other. With the relays carrying

T he Inaugural Singapore Swim Stars event was held over three days in Singapore. More than 30 of the current Olympic and world swimming champions graced our shores in this star studded line-up.

The event started on 5 September, Friday, with the Swim Stars Showdown held at the OCBC Aquatic Centre. The showdown was a swimming meet where the international athletes competed against each other in the pool. Singapore Swimming Club had three swimmers competing against the world’s best.

Christopher Cheong competed in the 100m breaststroke, swimming alongside world record holder Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa. Chantal Liew competed in the women 100m backstroke and Malcolm Low competed in the men 100m backstroke. This was a once-in-a lifetime experience for our swimmers.

On 6 September, the stars branched out to various locations across the island to conduct swim clinics for young swimmers. Singapore Swimming Club played hosts to three of the stars: Anthony Ervin, Ruta Meilutyte and Liam Tancock.

Anthony Ervin is an American international swimmer, who has won two Olympic medals and two World Championship golds.

Ruta Meilutyte is a 17 year old Lithuanian swimmer, Olympic gold medallist, and the current world record holder in the 50 and 100m breaststroke (long course).

Liam Tancock is an English backstroke swimmer, specialising in the 50m and 100m events. He holds the world record in the 50m backstroke, is a three-time world champion and a fi ve-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist.

These stars conducted a 2-hour clinic at the Club, giving the young swimmers tips and sharing with them new drills that could be used during training.

At the end of the clinic, fi ve of our swimmers were given the chance to swim in relays with the stars, against swimmers who participated in other clinics.

Ethan Lim swam in the 4 x 50m freestyle relay. Christian Low, Sarah Yip, Lauren Chew and Rae Low swam with the stars in the 500m freestyle relay. All fi ve swimmers had the rare chance of swimming together with the stars in the same relay team, and managing to win a medal against the swimmers-and-stars relay team from the other clinics. What a wonderful moment it must have felt for our swimmers!

The stars were fantastic motivators for our young swimmers. It was an unforgettable experience for all.

Interview with Ethan Lim

Balancing school & training

S PLASH: You have participated in a regional

swimming competition at the tender age of 13. Is

there any peer pressure from this achievement?

EL: Yes, there has been some peer pressure. In the lead-up to the SEA Age, I have met many swimmers who train more often and harder than I do. Most of them are older, but there are younger swimmers too. These swimmers have been in the competitive swimming scene far longer than I have, since I only started in Primary 5. Hence, they are more experienced than I am. They set a high standard in training ethics and competition results, so in their company, I am pushed even harder in training to match their standards. I hope, in time, to equal or even surpass their results.

SPLASH: Your parents must be supportive of your

competitive swimming. How do they inspire you?

EL: My parents have supported me non-stop throughout my swimming career. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Both my parents give me a lot of moral support to push on with training and avoid skipping sessions, while trying to keep up with school work. My father also drives me to the club for morning training and helps me to mind my nutritional requirements. I am inspired by their own work ethic, because on top of all this, and looking after my three other siblings, they both manage busy careers.

SPLASH: How often do you train? How do you juggle

your school work with training?

EL: I aim to train 9 times a week - twice on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and once on Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday. I get a rest day on Thursdays to let my body recover. Of course, with so much training it is tough to cope with school work, especially since I got into my dream school, Raffl es Institution. However, the need to balance training with school work has taught me valuable time management skills that enable me to make full use of what little time I do have. Inevitably, I’ve skipped training sessions when the school work load is too heavy, but my

parents are there to make sure I don’t do this too often.

SPLASH: Besides swimming, what other activities do

you do?

EL: When I was in primary school, I had fi ve other CCAs: tennis, chess, debates, scouts and a little bit of track and fi eld. I especially enjoyed scouting and would have loved to continue it. However, since starting secondary school, I have stopped all these activities to focus on training and school. What little free time I have now I try to spend playing with my adorable little sister.

Ethan Lim, aged 13, a competitive swimmer, has represented Singapore and SSC in the following swim events:

- 38th Southeast Asian Age Group Swimming Championships 2014 (won 1 Gold medal, 1 Silver)- 45th Singapore National Senior Age Group Swimming Championships 2014 (won 1 Silver)

Formerly an avid boy scout in primary school, Ethan enjoys spending time playing with his adorable little sister. He is currently studying in Raffl es Institution.

Interview with Chloe Wang

The importance of team spirit

S PLASH: When did you start to swim and what aspire

you to go competitive in swimming?

CW: I started learning how to swim at the age of seven (Primary 1), and went into competitive swimming in Primary 2. What made me join competitive swimming was that before primary one, I accompanied my brother to the swimming pool almost every other day when he went for training sessions. From there, I was exposed to the swimming arena. So, instead of waiting and watching him swim for 2 hours, my mum signed me up for swimming lessons and from there, I picked up swimming and truly enjoyed it. Hence, I started taking part in competitions and went into competitive swimming a year later.

SPLASH: Who is the most infl uential person in your

life and why?

CW: Personally, I would say that there is no single individual who has been the ‘most’ infl uential person in my life as everyone has played an important role in my life be it my family, coaches or friends. Hence, I am grateful for every single one of them as they have supported and guided me in one way or another.

SPLASH: Competitive swimming has brought you to

a few countries. What do you observe in the different

cultures in these countries when they do sports? Are

there areas we can learn from one another?

CW: Having been to the three overseas FINA Legs in Moscow, Dubai and Doha last year, I have indeed noticed the difference in cultures in these countries when they participate in sports. The main observation I noticed, was how the countries and the swimmers participating were more supportive of one another, more so than in Singapore. For example, at these three legs, the viewing galleries were fi lled with supporters from the hosting countries. Even though the supporters may not be fans of

With her sights set on representing Singapore in the SEA Games, Chloe trains fi ve to six sessions every week. Chloe is currently studying at Raffl es Girls’ School.

swimming, yet they come down to the competition venue to support the swimmers from their country. Additionally, the swimmers from different countries participating would cheer for their team members competing, giving them their fullest support. I think that we should try to learn this team spirit from other countries, so that when we compete internationally, others would see us more as a team rather than an individual.

SPLASH: How often do you train and what is your

advice to other swimmers?

CW: I train fi ve to six sessions every week. My advice is: give your best during every training session, and there may be times that you don’t perform well during competitions, but never ever give up as you’ve tried your best, and do continue working hard for the next competition.

SPLASH: What is your next goal and what are your

plans to achieve it?

CW: Currently, my short term goal is to achieve better timing during every competition and my long term goal is to hopefully make it to the SEA Games. To achieve it, I will set targets for every competition and work towards it by training harder.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Interview with our Head Coach (Swimming), Yuan Zao Yu

No need to turn back the clockCoach Yuan graduated with a Bachelor’s of Education (Swimming) from the prestigious Beijing Sports University in 1988. She started as an assistant coach with National Swimming Team of China for four years, and later with Qingdao Sports School’s professional team as a senior coach for seven years. She relocated to Singapore and trained Chinese Swimming Club’s swimming team as a senior coach for 11 years before joining SSC in May 2010 as a high performance swimming coach. She was appointed as Head Coach in August 2012.

S PLASH: At what age did you start swimming as a

sport?

YZY: I started swimming at 8 years old.

SPLASH: You participated in numerous competitions

in swimming, before being a professional coach

yourself. What was your most memorable swim meet?

YZY: I participated in many competitions, since I was eight. I remember once during a swimming meet, I had fever. Unfortunately, I was part of the relay team, for the night. The coach did agree to let me rest but I noticed that my team mates had really wanted to win the event. So I decided to have a go, and you know, our team won! I was 14 then and the concept of team work in sports, always linger in my memory.

SPLASH: What is the most challenging part of your job

as Head Coach?

YZY: As Head Coach, I face many challenges and have a responsibility to my swimmers and fellow-coaches. It is important that each coach contribute their best and always focus on motivating and bringing out the true potential from each swimmer. I am glad all 10 coaches have been working together very dilligently, as a team.

SPLASH: If you can reverse time and make another

career choice, what would that be and why?

YZY: After coaching for more than 25 years in swimming, I enjoy the challenges in grooming swimmers as well as the satisfaction in achieving results. I think I have a wonderful job! Presently, as Head Coach, I have many new challenges and sometimes, it certainly tests my skills. I graduated from Beijing Sports University, with a major in swimming. If I can turn back the clock, I would still

want to be involved in swimming and perhaps embark on a career with the National Team.

SPLASH: What was your swimming routine like when

you were a young swimmer?

YZY: I trained two sessions a day, 11 sessions per week. When you think about it, swimming is a big change, as one suddenly goes from land to water. It takes time for each swimmer to fi nd their level of comfort and ease in the water. To overcome this, the swimmer needs to spend a longer time in the water, thus swimmers must participate actively in many sessions. I hope our swimmers can understand this important fact and therefore, come for more training sessions.

SPLASH: What are your hobbies, likes & dislikes?

YZY: I like travelling and enjoy short holiday-breaks in between busy work schedules. During my free time, I like to keep in touch with friends and I enjoy reading. I dislike very hot weather, especially being under the hot sun.

SPLASH: Tell us more about your family.

YZY: Fortunately, I have very strong family support for my swimming coaching career. My son is independent and he seems to have inherited my stong sense of self-discipline, so I really have no trouble with him! Although my family is back home in China, I do regularly keep in touch with them.

SPLASH: What do your normally eat?

YZY: Generally, I prefer vegetables, fruits, and I try to eat less meat. Of course, I do indulge myself occasionally, by going for buffet lunch!

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Giving 25 Years of Great Service

A familiar face ina familiar placeby PATRICK WONG

A gnes Chew is a familiar face at The Palms. You may have recognised her, if you had

visited The Palms. It’s tough not to notice her cheerful demeanour, if you happen to drop by the dining establishment and tuck into your favourites there.

The bubbly and service-oriented Agnes has been with SSC for over 25 years and has been serving at The Palms since 1989. Yes folks, that’s a quarter of a century of dedicated service. Agnes will receive her 25-year Long Service Award at the Club’s Annual Staff Dinner & Dance on 3 November.

Agnes tells us she had wanted to join SSC, because she knew that she would be able to start her career path here. She had also wanted to join the service industry and beef up her communication skills. What makes this all the more astonishing is that this is still Agnes’ fi rst job till now. Now that is really staff loyalty at its best.

With a personal work motto to “providing better service, making members feel at ease and feeling welcomed”, it is no wonder that diners at The Palms have been coming back for more, and it’s not just for the great food.

For readers who are curious about Agnes’ personal life, she tells us that she is actually a grandmother! With her youthful appearance, it’s quite incredible to fathom

this. She is happily married, has a son aged 32 years old and an adorable three year old grand-daughter named En Xuan.

Agnes’ hobbies include collecting costume jewellery, and her dream vacation is Japan, as she enjoys beautiful nature and hopes to learn more of their community-centric culture. As The Palms tends to be very crowded during the weekends, she unwinds during weekdays, when she goes out with her family for a nice get-together cum outing.

To some members, The Palms is not just another familiar place to dine in. It has a familiar face, whom they can relate and talk to.

Agnes Chew (right), Outlet Manager at The Palms.
