While the College has expandedfromourcoreprograminpharmacy,onethinghasnotchanged–thestudentswhoattendAlbanyCollegeofPharmacyandHealthSciencesshareacommondesiretohelppeople.Whetherit’saspharmacists,laboratoryprofessionals,researchscientists,publichealthadvocates,orinothercapacities,ourstudentswanttomaketheworldabetter,healthierplace.

Thisyear’sPresident’sReportshinesaspot-lightonthoseindividualsandorganizationsatACPHSwhoaremakingapositiveimpactinthecommunity.Asyouread,pleasekeepinmindthatthisisjustthetipoftheiceberg.Forasmanyprogramsandinitiativesastherearehighlightedhere,manymorecouldnotbeincludedduetospacelimitations.

ThecommitmenttoservicethatexiststodayatACPHSisnotanewdevelopment.ItispartofthefabricoftheCollege.InoticeditimmediatelyuponjoiningACPHSin1998.Inspeakingwithmanyalumnithroughtheyears,Iknowthatthischaracteristictraithas

beenpresentfordecades,perhapsevendatingbacktotheearliestdaysoftheinstitution.It’salsobeenquicklyadoptedbythestudentsandfacultyonourVermontCampus.

Ihavespentmanyyearsinhighereduca-tion,andIamnotawareofanothergroupofstudentsthatismorecommittedtoservicethanourown.Thatiswhyitdoesnotsur-prisemewhenACPHSraisesmoremoneyfortheAmericanCancerSocietythananyschoolofcomparablesizeinthecountry.OrwhenCollegesAgainstCancer,anationwideorganizationcomprisedofchaptersfromnearly500schools,recognizedACPHSasits2011ChapteroftheYear.

Inadditiontosupportingthosewhoareillorsuffering,thereareseveralotherprogramsattheCollegethatseektohelppeoplefromdisadvantagedbackgrounds.ACPHSstudentsvolunteeringattheKoinoniaCareClinichelptreatresidentsinoneofthemosteconomicallydepressedsectionsofAlbany.ProgramssuchastheACPHSAcademyandtheSummerEnrichmentProgram,whichare

supportedbybothourstudentsandfaculty,nurturestudents’interestsinthesciencesbeginninginthirdgradeandcontinuingallthewaythroughhighschool.

AstheCollegededicatesadditionalresourcestofosteringglobalinitiatives,thisspiritofcommunityserviceisextendingfarbeyondtheCapitalRegionandVermonttoplacessuchasGuatemala,Belize,Dominica,andHispaniola.

Whenyoureadthesestoriesandseethisselflessnessandcompassionondisplay,youcan’thelpbutbeinspired.Youwillalsofeelgoodknowingthatthefutureisinverygoodhands.

TheMagicofScience

Onapleasantwinterafternoon,acaravanofyellowschoolbusespullsuptotheACPHScampus.Thedoorsopen,andstudentsspanninggradesthreethroughsixcomeboundingout.TheylineupatthefrontdoorandthenheadupstairsfortheirclassesattheACPHSAcademy.

Nowinitssixthyear,theACPHSAcademyisanafterschoolenrichmentprogramthatbringselementaryandmiddleschoolstudentstothecampusforspecializedscienceinstruction.Theclassesaretaughtbylocalschoolteachers.TheyareassistedintheclassroombyACPHSstudentswhoserveasmentorstotheyoungscholars.Theclassesmeetfortwohoursaday,twodaysaweek,fortenweekseachsemester.Eachyearculminateswithasciencefairandagraduationceremonywhichisattendedbythestudents’familiesalongwithmembersoftheCollegecommunity.

AccordingtoACPHSPresidentJamesGozzo,Ph.D.,theAcademywascreatedtogiveyoungerstudentswithaninterestinsciencetheopportunitytoexplorethesubjectingreaterdepth.“Wetargetmostlyyouthswithaveragegrades,butwhoshowaninterestinscience,”hesays.“Wetrytoinspirethemandhopetohelpthemreachtheirpotential.”

AsimilarprogramisheldontheACPHS-Vermontcampus,whereanadditional40studentsareenrolled.

TheAcademygivesthechildrenachancetodohands-onexperimentsandlearnthebasicsofscientificresearch.“Ourfocusisproblem-based,notaclassroomlecture,”Dr.Gozzosays.“Butwedon’ttellthestudentshowtosolveproblems.Wechallengethemtofindsolutionsontheirown.”

RebeccaBeach,thedirectoroftheACPHSAcademy,saystheprogramhasbeenshowntohelpstudentsimprovetheircoremathandscienceskills.“NearlyeverystudentintheprogrampassestheNewYorkStatefourthgradescienceexamwithascoreof3or4,whicharethehighestscoresyoucanget,”Beachsays.“OurAcademystudentstypicallyperformbetterontheseteststhantheirpeerswhoarenotintheprogram.”

TheprogramalsoseekstoinspirestudentstoonedayattendcollegeandperhapsevencometoACPHS.“Inadditiontowhattheylearnintheclassroom,wealsotakethemontoursofthecampussotheycanseeallaspectsofacollegestudent’slife,”Beachsays.StudentswhocontinueintheprogramanddowellinhighschoolareeligibleforscholarshipstoACPHS,shouldtheyattendcollegehere,shesays.

TheAcademyprogrambeganin2007with20thirdgradersfromtheDelawareCom-munitySchoolandhasexpandedtoincludestudentsfromtheBrighterChoiceCharterSchool.Eachyeartheprogramadds20morestudentswhileretainingtheoneswhocamethepreviousyear.Today,therearenearly120studentsinthethird-,fourth-,fifth-andsixthgradesacrossbothcampuses.“Someofthe

olderstudentswhobeganwiththeDelawareCommunitySchoolarenowseventhandeighthgraders.Theyarestillinterestedincontinuingwiththeprogram,buttheirschoolcommitmentshavemadeschedulingmuchmoredifficult,”Beachsays.“We’restillworkingoutnewwaystokeeptheminvolved.”

Throughtheyears,thestudentshavestud-iedrocks,exploredthehumanbody,andlearnedaboutthesolarsystem.EricBowens,11,saysheespeciallyenjoyedthehumanbodylessonswherehelearnedaboutmus-cles,ligaments,andneurons.“Anytypeofscienceisreallyexcitingtome,”saysBowens,asixthgraderwhoplanstostudymedicinesomeday.“Ilikesciencebecauseit’sdifferentthantheothersubjects.”

JendayiWomack,10,afifthgrader,saysshelikedmaking“ooblek,”agooeymixtureofcornstarchandwater(namedafteraDr.Seusscharacter)that’susedtodemonstratethatmattercanbebothaliquidandasolid.“Asaliquid,it’sfreetowigglearound,andasasolid,itcantaketheshapeofwhateverit’sin,”shesays.

ItistheopportunitytoworkwiththeACPHSstudentmentorsthatreallyhelpsmotivatetheyoungstudentstolearnandexcel.VineshSookhan,athirdyearpharmacystudentwhohasbeenamentorsincehisfreshmanyear,sayshisroleistoencouragethechildrentohonetheirproblemsolvingskills.“I’llshowthemtheway,buttheyhavetofindtheanswers,”hesays.

Thisyear,Sookhanishelpingtwosixthgradestudentsbuildasolarpoweredtoyandexploringhowtheplanethasbeenaffectedbygasemissions.“Iseethekidsbecomingmorematureandshowingagrowinginter-estintheirprojects,”hesays.“It’sdefinitelyagoodprogramforencouragingtheirinter-estsinthesciences.”

“Anytypeofscienceisreallyexcitingtome,”saysEricBowens,asixthgraderwhoplanstostudymedicinesomeday.

ACPHSAcademyscholarsworkcloselywithstudentsfromtheCollegeonavarietyofscienceprojects.Theprogramconcludeseachyearwithagraduationceremonyandsciencefairwheretheyoungstudentsreceivediplomasandshowcasewhattheyhavelearned.

Educating.Fundraising.Lobbying.ForstudentsintheACPHSchapterofCollegesAgainstCancer(CAC),theseactivitiesgivethemavoiceinthefightagainstthisdevas-tatingdisease.

Eachyearsinceitwasfoundedin2007,theCollege’sCACchapterhasattracted70to150studentswithapassionforhelpingpeoplewhoseliveshavebeentouchedbycancer.Thechapter,whichincludesacompaniongroupontheVermontCampus,wasformedinthe2007bySarahScarpace,Pharm.D.,BCOP,anassociateprofessorandassistantdeanforpharmacyprofessionalaffairs.

Asaboardcertifiedoncologypharmacist,Dr.Scarpaceoftenhearsfromstudentswhowanttostudyoncologyafterseeinghow

cancerhasaffectedlovedones.“Someofthemaretooemotionallyinvolvedtopursueitasacareer,”saysDr.Scarpace,whoservesasthegroup’sco-advisoralongwithSalBottiglieri,Pharm.D.,anassistantprofessorofoncologyandhematology,andJoannaSchwartz,Pharm.D.,whoisthefacultyadvisorfortheVermontCampus.“CollegesAgainstCancergivesthemanotheroutlet.”

CAC’ssignatureeventtakesplaceeachApril,whenstudents,faculty,andcommunitymembersgatheronthecampustowalkfromduskuntildawnintheRelayforLife.Duringtheevent,teammemberstaketurnswalkingfor12consecutivehourstoraisemoneyfortheAmericanCancerSociety.RelayforLifeisheldovernighttorepresentthefactthatcancerneversleeps.

In2010,ACPHSwasthetopRelayforLifefundraiserinthecountryforcollegeswithfewerthan2,500students,raisingawhop-ping$41,603.97.InadditiontoRelayforLife,boththeAlbanyandVermontchaptershavesizeablepresencesattheMakingStridesAgainstBreastCancerWalkeachfall,collec-tivelyraisingmorethan$5,000lastyear.

AccordingtoAlexBaron,directorofspecialeventsfortheAmericanCancerSocietyinAlbany,theACPHSchapterwasinthetopfivenationwideforpercapitafundraising(dollarsraisedtostudentsenrolled)in2008,2009,2010,and2011;theywerenumberonepercapitain2010.“Oneoftheimpres-sivethingsaboutthischapter,isthatinaddi-tiontothegreatfundraisingwork,theyputastrongemphasisoneducation,advocacy,andsurvivorship,”Baronsays.“Judgingfromtheirresults,youwouldthinkthatACPHShadapopulation10timesitssize.”

Clubmembersdomanyactivitiesthatbenefitpatients,familymembers,andthecommunity(thechapterassistedwithorinitiatedmorethan45suchactivitiesin2011).OneoftheprojectsiscookingforHopeClub,formerlyGilda’sClub,aprogramforcancersurvivorsandtheirfamilies.“Goingthereandseeingtheyoungkidssmilingis

reallyrewarding,”saysBrittanyFitzpatrick,afifthyearpharmacystudentwhochairsthesurvivorshipcommittee.ThegroupalsohostsholidaypartiesforpediatricpatientsandpreparescarepackagesforpatientsatNewYorkOncologyHematology,aprivatepracticeinAlbany.

Educationisanotherkeycomponentofoutreachactivities.Walkaroundthecampus,andyouwillseepostersaboutthesignsandsymptomsofdifferentcancers.CACmem-berscanalsobefoundstaffinginformationaltablesonthedangersofsmokinginplacessuchasCrossgatesMallinGuilderland.

Thegroupalsolobbiesonbehalfofpeoplewithcancerandtheirfamilies.They’veenlistedsupportforlegislationthatprotectstherightsofcancerpatients,provideshealthinsuranceforsmokingcessationprograms,andpromotestighterregulationoftobaccobythefederalgovernment.

Giventhescopeoftheseactivities,itisperhapslittlesurprisethattheACPHSchapterhasgarneredanumberofnationalawardsandhonors.ACPHSwasnamedbytheAmericanCancerSocietyastheOut-standingChapteroftheYearin2011(afterpreviouslyearningtwohonorablemen-tions),distinguishingthemselvesamong500

CACchaptersthroughoutthecountry.ThechapterhasalsoreceivedaLeaderofHopeawardfouryearsinarow,andin2008,wontheAdvocacyChapteroftheYearaward.

Theaccomplishmentsspeakforthemselves,butwhatinspiresthesestudentstojoinCollegesAgainstCancerandmakeadiffer-ence?Mostgetinvolvedbecausetheyhavelostlovedonestocancerorknowpeopleaffectedbythedisease.MichaelGuariglia,afifthyearstudentwhoco-chairsRelayforLife,losthisgrandfathertolungcancerandhasanunclewithstageIVcoloncancer.Hejoinedthegroupin2008andhassincetakenonseveralleadershiproles.

“Wecannotfightthefightforsomeonewhohasbeendiagnosedwithcancer,”hesays.“Wecannotendurethepainofchemo,thesicknessinvolvedwithit,orevenimaginetheemotionsthatsomeonegoesthroughwhentheyarediagnosed.

“Whatwecandothoughishelpraisemon-eyforresearchandsupportthosewhohavetheabilitytofindacure.Intheprocess,wecanfightbackagainstcancerbyremember-ingthosewhowehavelostandcelebratingthosewhoaresurvivors.”

“Judgingfromtheirresults,youwouldthinkthatACPHShadapopulation10timesitssize.”

TheRelayforLifeeventhostedbytheACPHSchapterofCollegesAgainstCancerralliescommunitymemberstoraisemoneyforcancerresearch.Amongschoolsitssize,ACPHShasfinishedinthetopfiveforfundraisingineachofthepastfouryears,finishingfirstin2010.

StopinattheannualMarioM.ZeollaHealthFairatACPHS,andit’squicklyapparentthatapharmacistismuchmorethansomeoneinalabcoatwhodispensesmedication.Astheeventdemonstratessowell,themodernpharmacistalsoeducatesthepublicabouthealth,encouragespreventivecare,andas-sistsinpropermedicationmanagement.

Whatstartedasashowcaseforstudent-ledpatientcareprojectsin2004hasevolvedintoafull-fledgedhealthfaireveryOctoberthatnowincludesoneofjustahandfulofmedicationtake-backprogramsinthere-gion(thefairisheldinOctobertocoincidewithAmericanPharmacistsMonth).

“It’sourwaytogivebacktothecommunity,”saysSarahDeRuosi,afifthyearpharmacystudentandpresidentoftheAmericanPhar-

macistsAssociation’sAcademyofStudentPharmacists(APhA-ASP),whichorganizesthefaireachyear.“We’rereallypromotinghealthandwellness.”

Aspartofthatmission,in2010thegroupbeganinvitingvisitorstocleanouttheirmedicinecabinetsandbringtheirunusedorexpiredmedicationstotheHealthFair.Workingwithlocallawenforcementof-ficials,thedrugsarecollectedattheeventand–followingtheguidelinesoftheNewYorkStateDepartmentofEnvironmentalConservation(DEC)andtheBureauofNar-coticsEnforcement–incineratedatafacilityinHudsonFalls,NY.

Bysafelydisposingofunwantedmedica-tions,theprogramhelpspreventthesedrugsfromenteringlocalwaterways.

AccordingtotheDEC,researchhasshownthatcontinuousexposuretolowlevelsofmedicationshasalteredthebehaviorandphysiologyoffishandaquaticlife.“Manypeopleflushtheirdrugsdownthetoilet,”De-Ruosisays,referencinganapproachtodrugdisposalthathadbeenadvocatedforyears,butisnowdiscouraged.“Wedon’twantthemtodothatanymore.Nowtheyknowtheycanbringthemhere.”

Thetake-backprogramalsohelpsreduceaccesstoprescriptionpainkillers,whichaddressesanevengreaterpublichealthproblem:thegrowingepidemicofprescrip-tionpainkillerabuseandoverdoses.TheCentersforDiseaseControlandPreventionreportsthisproblemhasreacheddisturb-inglevels,with12millionpeoplereportingthattheyusedprescriptionpainkillersfornonmedicalreasonsin2010.

“Gettingthosedrugsoutofmedicinecabi-netsisamajorsteptowardreducingaccess,”saysJaneBoyd,co-directorofthePharmacyPracticeLabandco-advisortoAPhA-ASP.“Wehadmorethan50householdsthatbroughtmedicationstouslastyear.”In2010,approximately220poundsofover-the-counterandprescriptiondrugswerecollected.Remarkably,someoftheprescrip-tionsdatedbacktothe1960’s.

Forseveralweeksaftereachtake-backpro-gram,theCollegereceivesphonecallsfromthosewhowereunabletoattendandwhowanttoknowthedateofthenextcollectionevent.Thiscontinuedinterestindicatesthatmembersofthesurroundingcommunitiesappreciatetheprogramandrecognizeitsimportance.Asaresult,theAPhA-ASPhasaddedasecondtake-backeventtothecalendarinthespring.

Despitethegrowingpopularityofthetake-backprogram,thecentralfocusoftheHealthFairremainsthepatientcareboothsthattargetarangeofhealthrelatedissues,includingheartdisease,diabetes,immuniza-tions,andpropermedicationusage.

RecenthealthfairshaveexpandedfromthesecoreofferingstoaddhealthrelatedorganizationsandservicessuchasAl-banyMassageTherapy,CDPHP,theAlbanychapteroftheAmericanCancerSociety,andevenafarmer’smarket.Inthefuture,

organizershopetooffereyeexamsandteethcleanings.

“Ourgoalisn’ttojuststayoncampus,”saysSarahBotting,afifthyearpharmacystudentandsecretaryforthegroup.“Wetrytoworkwithlocalpharmacies,bloodpres-sureclinics,andothergroupsandgettheminvolvedtoo.”

Asthefairhasexpandedinrecentyears,ithasattractedmorepeoplefromoutsidethecampus.LastOctober,thefive-houreventdrew700visitors.“Wereallywantpeopletocomebackeveryyear,”saysAlexGoh,afifthyearpharmacystudentandtheAPhA’svicepresidentofmembership.“Wewanttoencouragehealthandwellness.Pharmacyisn’tjustaboutpillsandmedications.”

Forthestudents,theHealthFairisanopportunitytoalsoputtheirbuddingprofessionalismintopractice,saysPattyTompkins,eventsmanagerforACPHS,andthegroup’sco-advisor.“ThegoaloftheHealthFairistoallowthestudents,workingwithfacultywhereappropriate,toapplywhattheyhavelearnedintheclassroomtoreallifesituationsandhonetheirskillsashealthcareprofessionals,”shesays.“It’sreallyinspiring.”

CommunityServiceDayOnSaturday,March24,2012,morethan120students,faculty,andstafffromtheCollegeparticipatedintheschool’sCommunityServiceDay.Frommorningthroughearlyevening,volunteersofferedtheirassistanceatavarietyoflocalorganizations,including:BoysandGirlsClubofAlbany,HabitatforHumanity,CityRescueMission,ColonieSeniorServiceCenter,andDelmarPlace(aseniorassistedlivingfacility).ACPHSalsohosteda“FieldDay”onthecampusforstudentsandfamiliesintheACPHSAcademyprogram(page4),whichfeaturedoutdoorsportsandactivities.

Somehighschoolstudentsspendtheirsummerstoilingawayaslifeguardsorserv-ers.Othersattendcampsorhelpoutathome.Butsince1998,nearly100studentsfromtheCapitalRegionhavedonescien-tificresearchatACPHSthroughauniquesummerprogramofferedbytheCollegeinconjunctionwiththeCityofAlbany.

innercityhighschoolstudentssaysACPHSPresidentJamesGozzo,Ph.D.,whoinitiatedtheprogramshortlyafterbeingnamedtheCollege’spresidentin1998.“Theobjectiveistoexposestudentstoopportunitiesinre-searchthatmightnototherwisebeavailabletothemandencouragethemtopursuecareersinscience.It’saprogramthatwefeelisneededandimportant.”

workingwithACPHSfacultyresearchers.Eachresearcheristeamedupwithtwostudents,whoarerecommendedfortheprogrambytheirguidancecounselors.“Thestudentsweenrollintheprogramhaveenjoyedanddonewellintheirhighschoolchemistryandbiologycourses,”saysDavidClarke,Ph.D.,anassociateprofessorofchemistry,deanoftheSchoolofArtsandSciences,andadvisortotheprogram.“Mostofthemhaveaninterestinpursuingacareerinthehealthormedicalfields,butdon’tyetknowaboutmanyoftheoptionsavailabletothem.”Aspartoftheirapplications,allstu-dentsmustprovidetranscripts,PSATscores,essaysabouttheircareergoals,andwhattheyhopetogetfromtheprogram,hesays.

MostofthestudentscomefromAlbanyHighSchooland,asaresultofthepartnershipwiththeCityofAlbany,arepaidthroughthecity’ssummeryouthemploymentprogram.TheSummerEnrichmentProgramhasalsoenrolledstudentsfromotherpublicandprivateschoolsinthearea,thoughthosewhoarenotresidentsoftheCityofAlbanyarenoteligibleforthestipend.

Theprojectsthestudentsareassigneddependonthefacultyandtheirresearchinterests.“Wefindoutwhichfacultyareabletotakeonastudentortwo,identifyaproj-ect,andleaveittothefacultymemberstoworkoutthestudents’roles,”Dr.Gozzosays.

“Mostprojectsinvolvegatheringdata,butthestudentsalsolearntocollaborate.”

Lastsummer,studentsdidresearchtogaugetheeffectivenessofthehepatitisBvaccineonhemodialysispatients;exam-inedtheeffectofaphosphatehormoneonsmoothmusclecellsinthebloodvesselsofpatientswithchronickidneydisease,andcomparedtwomethodsforanalyzingHbA1Cinpeoplewithdiabetes.“WhattheydohelpstakethesestudiesfromstepAtostepB,”Dr.Gozzosays.

Inadditiontotheirownresearch,thestudentstourarearesearchlabsandpharmaceuticalcompanies,whichinthepasthasincludedvisitstoAlbanyMedicalCenter,AlbanyMolecularResearch,Regener-onPharmaceuticals,andCovidien.Thetoursaredesignedtohelpthestudentslearnhowthescientificcommunityworkstogethertounderstanddiseaseandtodeveloptreat-ments,Dr.Clarkesays.“Theygetachancetoseetheprocessofdrugdevelopmentinaction,anopportunitythatmostotherstudentsdon’tget,”headds.

JakeValentine,21,ofAlbany,attendedtheprogramin2007,andworkedonresearchinvolvingnanoparticlesinthetreatmentofglaucomawithShakerMousa,Ph.D.,ViceProvostforResearchatACPHSandchairmanofthePharmaceuticalResearchInstitute.Valentinesaysthesummerenrichmentpro-

“Theindependenceweweregivenwasgreat,”saysValentine,whoisstudyingbiol-ogyandphilosophyatTuftsUniversityandplanstogotomedicalschool.“Itforcedusintoacollaborativeenvironmentwithapartner,ratherthanthetraditionalteacher-studentstyleoflearning.”

Jake’ssister,MiaValentine,ahighschoolsophomore,isalsohopingtogetacceptedintotheprogram.Theirmother,JennyMcErleanofAlbany,saysshewasthrilledwiththelearningexperiencehersonhad.“ThefirsttimeIsawhiminawhitecoatandgoggles,Iwasjustdelighted,”shesaid.

Attheendoftheprogram,thestudentsarerequiredtopresenttheirfindingstoaroomfullofACPHSfaculty,staff,andoftenthestudents’families.“Whenthepresentationsareover,Iwilloftenhavefacultytellmehowimpressedtheywerewiththestudentsandthequalityoftheworktheyhaddone,”Dr.Clarkesays.“Thestudentsarealwaysproudoftheirwork,andtheirparentsareproudtoo.”

“Theobjectiveistoexposestudentstoopportunitiesinresearchthatmightnototherwisebeavailabletothemandencouragethemtopursuecareersinscience.It’saprogramthatwefeelisneededandimportant.”

HighschoolstudentsintheSummerEnrichmentProgramconductscientificresearchwithACPHSfacultymembers.Attheendoftheprogram,thestudentsdiscusstheirfindingsviaoralandposterpresentationsandreceivecertificatesofaccomplishment.

Figuresreleasedinfall2011fromtheU.S.CentersforDiseaseControlandPreventionshowedthat37,485Americansdiedofprescriptionnarcoticoverdosesin2009(thelatestyearthedataisavailable).

It’sastaggeringnumber,butthemorechill-ingtakeawayisthat2009markedthefirsttimesince1979–theyeartheCDCbegantrackingthisinformation–thatU.S.drugrelateddeathseclipsedthosefrommotorvehicleaccidents.

This“milestone”resultedinprominentstoriesintheLos Angeles Timesandothermediaoutlets,raisingawarenessamongthegen-eralpublicofwhatcanonlybedescribedasahealthepidemic.Infact,moreAmericansnowabuseprescriptionmedicationsthancocaine,heroin,hallucinogens,andinhal-antscombined.

Whilemanywereunawareoftheserious-nessofthisissue,thereportwasnotasurpriseformostpharmacistsandhealthcareprofessionals.Duringthefall2010MidyearRegionalMeetingsoftheAmericanPharmacistAssociation-AcademyofStudentPharmacists(APhA-ASP),theAcademymovedtotakealeadershiproleinthisareabyintroducinganewcommunityoutreachprogramcalled“GenerationRx.”Thiseduca-tionalprogram–developedbyTheOhioStateUniversityCollegeofPharmacyand

fundedbyCardinalHealth–isdesignedtoincreasepublicawarenessofprescriptionmedicationabuseandencouragehealthcareprovidersandotherstoactivelyworktopreventabuse.

StudentsfromboththeAlbanyandVer-montCampuseswereinattendanceforthelaunchofGenerationRxandwereimmedi-atelyinspiredtorollouttheprogramintheircommunities.UsingmaterialsprovidedbyAPhA-ASPandsupplementingthatinforma-tionwiththeirownbrochuresandFacebookpages,thestudentsbeganreachingouttolocalschoolsandyouthorganizations.

“Ittookawhiletogetitgoinginschools,”saysKarenPeck,aVermontCampusstudentdescribingoneofthechallengesassociatedwithlaunchingtheprogram.“Sinceit’sasensitivesubject,theschoolswanttoknowexactlywhatwewillbediscussingbeforetheyapproveit.”

Aftermorethanayearofknockingondoors,theyfinallygainedapprovaltopresenttostudentsintwoBurlingtonareahighschoolsthisyear.ThepresentationsincludedinteractivediscussionsandFamilyFeudstylegamesdesignedtokeepthestudentsengagedonasubjectthat,ifnotpresentedwell,couldeasilycausehighschooleyestoroll.

Basedonthefeedbackfromstudentsandteachers,thepresentationwaswellreceived.Onestudentwroteinherevaluation:“Ithoughtthattheinformationwasveryuse-

fulandinteresting,anditwillhelpmewithsomeofmyfriendswhoIknowaremisusingprescriptiondrugs.”TeachersfromColches-terHighSchoolweresoimpressedwiththepresentationthattheyhavedecidedtomaketheGenerationRxprogramaperma-nentpartoftheirhealthclasscurriculum.

ACPHS-VermontstudentAndreaNewgrenbelievestheprogramhasgeneratedapositiveresponsebecauseoftheapproachtakenbythestudentpresenters.“Wearenotuptheretryingtopreachtostudents.Wejustwanttomakethemawareofthedangersandexplainhowtheycanhelptheirfriends,”shesays.

AstheseactivitieshavebeentakingplaceinVermont,studentsontheAlbanyCampushavebeenworkingtohelpeducatebothyoungstudentsandtheirpeersatACPHS.

Withsomeofthehighestratesofdrugabusebeingamongteensasyoungas12-years-old,AlbanyCampusstudents

decidedtotailoroneoftheirpresentationstoaclassoffourthgradestudentswhoattendtheCollege’sACPHSAcademyprogram(seepage6).

Thepresentationincludedachallengetostudentstoseparategummybearcandiesfromgummyvitamins(somethingmanyofthekidshaddifficultydoing)andincludeddistributionofGenerationRxbracelets.“Iwassurprisedbyhowmuchtheyknewaboutthesedrugs,evenatthisage,”saysDanyelleRolnick,oneoftheACPHSpresent-ers.“Theyseemedinterestedintheinforma-tionthatwesharedwiththemandunder-standingofthepotentialdangers.”

AspartoftheGenerationRxprogram,thestudentsinvitedJakeNichols,aformerpharmacistandrecoveringprescriptiondrugaddict,togiveapresentationoncampus(thepresentationwassimulcastedtotheVermontCampusviatheCollege’sdistancelearningtechnology).

YoucouldhearapindropduringthecourseofNichols’onehourpresentationashede-scribedhis15-yeardescentintoabuseandhisongoingrecovery.Nicholsbelievesthatpharmacyschoolsdonotcurrentlydevoteenoughtimetoteachingaboutaddictionandisadvocatingthatthesubjectbemadeamandatorypartofthecurricu-luminsteadofaonehourlectureor,atbest,anelective.

StudentsonbothcampusesarealreadyhardatworkontheirGenerationRxplansfornextyear.Inadditiontocontinuingtheirstudentoutreachefforts,theyareplanningtoex-pandtheirfocustoincludeolderaudiencessuchasparents,teachers,schoolboards,andevenpracticingpharmacists.

Communityservicehasalwaysbeenpopu-larwithACPHSstudents,andthroughtheyears,mostofthoseeffortshavebeenlocallydirected.Whilelocaloutreachpro-gramsremainstrong,thereareagrowingnumberofACPHSservice-basedinitiativesthatarenowglobalinscope.ThesestudyabroadopportunitiesareenablingACPHSstudentstomakeadifferenceinimpover-ishedareasoftheworld,andatthesametime,changetheirownlivesinwaystheyneverthoughtimaginable.

Overthepastyear,groupsofstudentsandfacultycompletedmedicalmissionstoDominica,Guatemala,andBelize.ThesetripsarethefoundationforwhattheCol-legeplanstobeanever-expandinglistofglobalexperienceopportunitiesforACPHSstudentsandfaculty.

DominicaFouryearsago,JeanineAbrons,Pharm.D.,andherhusbandweremarriedonthetinyCaribbeanIslandofDominicaandstayedattheJungleBayResort.

Followingthetrip,aJungleBaynewslet-tertoformerguestsarrivedinDr.Abrons’mailboxrequestingmedicalsupplies.“Icontactedseveralfriends,pharmacies,andothersandwasabletogeneratedonationsofcommonover-the-counteritemsinclud-ingibuprofen,gauzebandages,medicationpillbottles,antibioticointmentcreams,anddosingspoons,”recallsDr.Abrons,aformerAssistantProfessoratACPHS.“Severalmonthslater,IreceivedanemailfromthedoctoroftheruralmedicalclinicnearJungleBaythankingmeprofuselyforthedona-

tions,sayingthiswasthefirsttimethattheyhadaconsistentsupplyoftheseitems.”

Dr.Abronsreturnedtotheislandseveralmonthslatertomeetwiththeowneroftheresortandtodiscusshowstudentphar-macistsmightbeabletohelp,andfromthere,theDominicarotationwasborn.Theprogramisnowheadingintoitsthirdyear.

InOctober2011,KristenFelthousen(ACPHSDirectorofCareerServices),Dr.Abrons,andherhusband,ananesthesiologistandclinicalprofessoratTheUniversityofIowa,arrivedinDominicawithtenACPHSstudents,allofwhomhadbeentrainedandpreparedtoprovidebasichealthcaretothepeopleoftheisland.

Thisgroup–thesecondtoparticipateintheDominicarotation–conductedafirst-of-its-kindhealthfairwheretheyspentthedaycounselingandeducatingpatientsaboutcommonmedicalconditions.Thestudentsalsoworkedinalocalhealthcareclinic.

“Themostcommonconditionwesawwasdiabetes,buttherewerealsoalotofquestionsaboutkidneydisease,”Kristenexplains.Theclinicwasstaffedwithjusttwonursesandaphysicianwhorotatedbetweentwoclinics,sothestudents’pres-encewasverymuchwelcomed.

“Peopleweresokind,warmandwelcomingandexcitedtoseeusbecausetheyknewthatweweretheretohelp,”sheadds.

“ThepatientsinDominicaweremoreenthu-siasticabouttheirhealthcarethanI’veseenhereathome,”sayssixthyearPharm.D.stu-dent,HassanSheikh.“Theyreallywantedtoknowaboutwhatthemedicationsdidandhowtheyaffectedtheirhealthorbodies.”

Theothercomponentofthemissionwasteaching.ACPHSstudentsspenttwofulldaysinaschoolwithlocalchildrenfromkindergartenthroughgrade12,wheretheyledaseriesofcompoundingexercisesandphysicalactivities.

Withonlytwopharmacistsontheisland,thereareveryfewrolemodelsforstudentsinterestedintheprofession.“Thereisastrong,strongneedformorepharmacists,”Kristensays.“Ourstudentsopenedthechil-dren’seyestopharmacyasacareeroption.”

Asidefromteachingthelocalchildren,thestudentsalsofoundthemselvesputtingtheireducationtouseandthinkingonthefly.“Wehadtoworkwiththetoolsthatwereavailabletous,”Hassansays.“Thelocalpeoplerelymoreonanecdotaltreatmentandherbs.Itwastrickytryingtoincorporatetheirapproacheswitha[Western]therapythatwouldbebeneficialtothepatient.And,whilemostofthepeoplespokeEnglish,westillhadtoresorttopicturesandmorecreativewaysofcommunicating.Itwaschallenging,butIbelievethatwehadapositiveimpact.”

TheCollegeexpectstoofferthisrotationtwiceinthe2012-2013academicyear–onceinJanuaryandthenagaininMay.

GuatemalaAftertrainingandpreparingforseveralmonths,ACPHSstudentsRichaMehta,KariMcCabe,andJaniceHarter,alongwithfac-ultymemberCarmenMojica,Pharm.D.,M.S.,embarkedontheCollege’sfirstrotationinGuatemala.TheyworkedinaclinicinSanRaymundo,onehournorthwestofGuatemalaCity.

Kari’sfirstimpressionoftheclinicwasnotwhatsheexpected.“Everythingwasgatedandsurroundedbywallssoitwasabitintimidatingontheoutside,butIfeltverysafeinside.Thedormsandcafeteriaweremorethansufficientandtheclinicwaswelldesigned.Ithadabeautifulgarden,andthepharmacywaslocatedrightinthemiddleofeverything.”

Thegroupimmediatelygottoworkorganiz-ingandcleaningtheclinicandtakinginventoryofwhatmedicationstheyhadavailabletothem.Eachdaythegroupwouldeatanearlybreakfastthenheadinat7a.m.tostarttheirwork.Onanygivenday,200to300patientswouldpassthroughtheclinic.

Uponenteringtheclinic,apatientwouldreceiveanumberedfoldercontainingtheircharts.Next,theirbloodpressuresandbirthdayswerenoted,alongwiththeirchief

StudentswhotraveledtoDominicaspentpartoftheirtimewithlocalschoolchildrenteachingcompoundingandleadingotheractivities.

“Itisonethingtoreadaboutpovertyandextremeconditions,butanothertoactuallyexperienceit.Itchangedmyunderstandingofeverydaylife.”

complaints.Thenpatientsweredispenseddailysuppliesofvitaminsandalbendazole(amedicationtotreattapeworm)tobegiventoeachmemberinthehousehold.

“Basedontheirchiefcomplaints,thepa-tientswouldbesenttowomen’shealth,pe-diatrics,generalmedicine,ortheoperatingroom,“Richasays.“MyimmediatethoughtwhenIsawtheoperatingroomwas‘howintheworldisthisroomkeptsterile?’ItturnedoutthattheO.R.ranlikeclockwork,andtheytooksterilizationveryseriously.Theoperatingroomandtheoperationsthattookplacetherewereabsolutelyamazing.”Someofthoseproceduresincludedherniarepairs,cystremovals(onewomanhada14poundtumorremovedandwenthometheverynextday),cesareansection,woundcleaning,andsuturing.

“SpanishistheprimarylanguageinGuate-mala,andtherewasnocommunicationinEnglishwhatsoever,”saysRicha.“ThankfullyDr.Mojicaandanotherpharmacistwereflu-entinSpanish.Wehadtranslatorstoo,buttheywereusuallyhelpingotherhealthcareproviders.ItookSpanishinhighschoolsobytheendofthemission,Iwascomfortablecounselingthepatientsaswell.”

Someoftheotherhighlightsfromthetripincludedspendingtwodayswithamedi-cinemanwhoshowedthemhowhemadenaturalhealingremedies.Thegroupalsovisitedafosterhomethathousedchildrenages6to12.Thekidsperformeddancesandtaughtthemhowtomakefabricsandmasa–atypeoftortilladough.

“Theexperiencefromstarttofinishmostcertainlychangedme,”Dr.Mojicasays.“Itmademerealizehowluckyweareandhowwetakeeverythingforgranted–ourfoodsupply,runningwater,accesstohealthcare,jobs,andeducation.”

Dr.MojicaandKaribothagreethataninternationalmission,whereyouarehelpinganotherhumanbeingandmakingadifference,canhaveamuchbiggerimpactonone’slifethansimplyfulfillingacollegerotation.

“ThisexperiencewassotouchingandrewardingthatIwouldrecommendittoanyone,”Kariadds.“ItwastrulythemostmemorableexperienceinmysixyearsatACPHS.Iamdeterminedtogoonan-othermissionassoonaspossible,andtheonlyquestionleftiswhenitwillfitintomyschedule.”

“Peopleweresokind,warm,welcoming,andexcitedtoseeusbecausetheyknewthatweweretheretohelp.”

BelizeLastJanuary,sixteenstudentsandonealum-nusparticipatedintheCollege’sfirstmedicalmissiontoBelize.“Therewasnoexpectationofgettinganysortofcredit,justlifeexperienceandadesiretohelpothers,”explainsKevinHickey,Ph.D.,associateprofessorintheDepartmentofHumanitiesandCommunication,whoaccompaniedthestudentsonthetrip.

ThemissionoriginatedfromadesirebystudentsRebeccaNashettandKatelynRochestertoorganizeamedicalorientedtriptoBelizeonbehalfoftheCollege.ThroughtheassistanceofProWorld,anorganizationthathelpscoordinatesuchtrips,thestudentswereplacedinvillagesandclinicsthroughoutthecountry.

Eachdaythestudentswouldsee60ormorepatientsin“popup”clinicsorgodoor-to-doorintolocalcommunitieswithtranslatorstoofferhealthscreenings.Atypicalscreen-ingwouldincludebloodpressure,weightcheck,bloodsamples,vitals,andpatientcounseling.IftherewasacasetooinvolvedorcomplexfortheteamofpharmacystudentsandBelizeannurse,avanwaswait-ingnearbytotransportthepatientstoalocalhospital.

“Wewoulddriveanywherefrom20min-utestoanhourtosetupclinicsindifferentunderservedruralareas,”Katelynexplains.“Sometimeswesetupinanemptycommunityhealthcenterthatconsistedofjustaconcretefloorandfourwalls.Atoneclinic,anoutdoorclassgraciouslysqueezedtogetherononehalfofacementpadwhileweusedtheotherhalf.Luckily,therewasatinroofthatkeptusfairlydrywhenitbegantopour!”

StudentsalsospentonedayteachingattheCristoReyElementarySchool,wheretheypresentedlessonstoelementaryschoolchildrenonhypertension,hygiene,asthma,andtheimportanceofbrushingone’steeth.

“ProworldsaidthatACPHSstudentswereamongthemostorganizedgroupstheyhadseen,”Dr.Hickeyshares.“Wewereintegratedwithcollegestudentsfromothermissionsandourstudentsstoodoutasparticularlywellprepared.”

ThebiggesttakeawayforDr.Hickeywashowthestudentswerechangedbytheirexperiencesandwhattheylearnedaboutthemselvesandtheworldaroundthem.

“AtriplikethistoBelizeisimportantbecauseyou’relearningsomanythings.It’sarich

educationalexperience,notsolelyaboutmedicineorpharmacypractice,”Dr.Hickeysays.“Ourstudentsallstayedwithlocalfamiliessotheywerehavingbreakfastanddinnerwiththem,sleepingintheirhomes,andcelebratingwiththesefamilies.Theybecomereal,notjustanonymousCentralAmericanpeopleyouhearorreadabout.Theyarepeoplewhohavelives,justlikethestudents.”

Rebeccaagreedtothebenefitsofthismultifacetedapproachtolearningandfelttransformedbywhattheexperiencetaughther.

“IneverexpectedtobecomesoattachedtoacountryIwasonlyinfortwoweeks,butIfounditdifficulttoleavethepeopleIhadmet,livedwith,andworkedwith,”shesays.“Itisonethingtoreadaboutpovertyandextremeconditions,butanothertoactuallyexperienceit.Itchangedmyunderstandingofeverydaylife.”

Lookingahead,thereisagroupof18stu-dentswhowillvisitthePeruvianAmazonthissummertohelpnativepeopleswithoutaccesstohealthcareandconductresearchonlocalmedicinalplants.TripsarealreadybeingplannedfornextyeartoplacesthatincludeVietnamandSenegal.

ThesearewordscommonlyusedbyACPHSpharmacystudentswhovolunteerattheKoinoniaPrimaryCarecliniclocatedintheheartofinnercityAlbany.Theclinicwasfoundedin2002byDr.BobPaeglow(knowntoallasDr.Bob)tohelpcareforthepeopleoftheWestHillandArborHillneighborhoodsofthecity,wherefewoftheresidentscanaffordmedicalinsurance.Koi-noniaprovidespatientswithprimarymedi-calandmentalhealthservices–regardlessoftheirabilitytopay.

Asanextensionofhiscommitmenttoservice,Dr.BobcreatedaprogramcalledCarefromtheStartto“helpteachmedicalstudentsthejoysofcaringforthepoorandlessfortunate.”ACPHSstudentsBridgetLenaghan,Annemarie“Annie”Nardolillo,andKenzieKeenanlearnedoftheprogramandinquiredaboutvolunteeropportuni-tiesforpharmacystudentstowhichDr.Bobhappilyobliged.

CarefromtheStartisentirelystudentbasedandtheworkofthisprogramisdoneexclusivelyatKoinonia.OnWednes-dayevenings,aftertheclinic’snormalhours,studentsfromAlbanyMedicalCollege(AMC)andACPHSarriveatKoinoniatotreat“realworld”patients.

TherearefourgroupsofAMCstudentsandwithineachgroupthereisoneACPHSstudent.Anniesays,“Itisaprivilegetobeapartofthisprogram.Notonlyarewehelpingpeopleinneed,butwearebuild-ingrelationshipswithfuturephysiciansandlearninghowimportantaninterdisciplinaryapproachistoeffectivepatientcare.”

“It’sawin-winsituation,”saysDr.Bobofthemedicalstudent-pharmacystudentdynam-ic.“Themorethetwoprofessionsworkwitheachother,themoretheyunderstandthevaluethateachbringstotheteam.Inthe

Typically,themedicalstudentsperformtri-ageandinitialclinicalassessments,andthepharmacystudentsreviewmedicationlistsandconductreconciliations.Theteamsthenreporttheirfindingsbacktoaphysicianorresidentonduty.Dependinguponthesitu-ation,thepharmacystudentsmayalsobeinvolvedwithtakingvitalsanddoingtriage.“We’vebeenabletocareformanydiseasestatesincludingdiabetes,hypertension,dys-lipidemia,asthma,cold/flu-likesymptoms,andpain,”saysKenzie.“EachweekIworkedattheclinic,IbecamemoreconfidentinmytherapeuticassessmentsasIbecamebetteratcounselingpatients.”

Indescribinghowthisworkreachesbeyondthescopeofwhatshemightseeinamoretraditionalpracticeexperience,Anniesays,“Wearedoingexaminations,practicingskillssuchaspatientassessment,andlearninghowtocommunicatewithawiderangeofpatients.Thisexperienceishelpingustoprioritizeconditionsinaverylimitedtimeframe.”

Sincetheclinichassomanypatientsonthese“afterhours”evenings,timeistrulyatapremium.“Fifteenminutespercaseperteammaybeallthetimeyouhave,”saysBridget,“soyouneedtoknowwhat’simpor-tanttotreat.Thisinterdisciplinaryapproach

isteachingushowflexibilityinworkingwithourteamandourpatientsisessentialinprovidingtreatment.”

Anexampleofthisflexibilitywasdemon-stratedrecentlywhenafemalepatientwhohadbeentakingmedicationsforheadachesreturnedtotheclinic.Labvaluesshowedthatshewasreachingliverfailure,hadsymptomsofstroke,andnumbness.ThesewerereportedtoDr.Bobwhopromptedthestudentvolunteerstoconsultwitheachother.Thestudentscametotheconclusionthatthepatientwaspre-diabetic(whichDr.Bobalreadyknewbutwantedthestudentstodiscoverusingtheirknowledgeofthecase).Anniesays,“Theplanoftreatmentwasbasedontherecommendationsofthewholeteam,anditwasrewardingtoseethatourteamworkwaseffectiveforthepatient.”

Theinteractionswithteammates,residents,Dr.Bob,andofcourse,thepatients,areexposingtheACPHSstudentstotheheartofpharmacypractice–patientcare.“WorkinginthisclinicandcollaboratingwithfuturephysiciansissomethingIwouldrecom-mendtoeverypharmacystudent,”saysBridget.“IjoinedCarefromtheStarttoworkwithunderprivilegedpatients.It’sbeenaneye-openingexperience.I’msogladtohavehadthisopportunity.”

Althoughhehasfewmaterialpossessions,Dr.Bobconsidershimselfincrediblyrich.Thisrichness,hesays,hascomefrominvestinginthelivesofothers,notonlyofthepoor,butalsointhosewhowillcarryonhislegacyofcaringforandservingthoselessfortunate.WithstudentsatACPHSandAMClininguptovolunteerintheCarefromtheStartprogram,itappearsthathislegacywillbesecure.

“Itisaprivilegetobepartofthisprogram.Notonlyarewehelpingpeopleinneed,butwearebuildingrelationshipswithfuturephysicians.”

GrowinguponadairyfarminupstateNewYorkdidnotaffordSarahPricewithmanyopportunitiestotravel.Thatallchangedwhenshemetherfuturehusband.

ApproximatelythreehoursnorthofSarahinChamplain,NewYork,ColinPricewasborntotwoteachersandtraveledfrequentlywithhisparentstotheWestCoastandEuropeasachild,thenCentralandSouthAmericawithhisfatherthroughoutcollege.

ColinandSarahbothenrolledatAlbanyCollegeofPharmacyandHealthSciencesin1997.Theymetasfreshmenandbegandatingassecondyearstudents.

“IhadneverleftNewYorkuntilColincameintomylife,”Sarahexplains.“MyfirsttripoverseastoEuropewasaneyeopenerforsomeonewhogrewupinasmalltownwithonlyonestoplight.Afterthattrip,Iwashooked.”

Thetwograduatedin2002and,aftertakingtheirboards,theyspentafewmonthsbackpackingthroughEurope.

“ForthenextsevenyearsweworkedinUtahforthewintermonthsandtraveledinthesummer,”Sarahsays.TheytrekkedthroughCentralAmerica,SouthAmerica,Europe,Asia,Africa,andtheUnitedStates.Aftergettingmarriedin2006,theytookathreemonthhoneymoonaroundtheworld.

LastJune,ColinandSarahsetoffonadiffer-entkindoftrip.TheyvolunteeredforaoneweekmedicalmissionwithanorganizationcalledInternationalAidServingKids(iASK)totheCaribbeanislandofHispaniola,whichismadeupofHaitiandtheDominicanRepublic.

iASKhasbeeninexistencefortenyears,op-eratingtoimprovethelivingconditionsoforphaned,abandoned,andpoverty-strickenchildrenaroundtheworld,withaprimaryfocusonHaitiandtheDominicanRepublic.

andputusincontactwiththeleaderandpresidentoftheorganization.”

ThePrices’swerepartofateamofmedi-calprofessionalsthatincludedadentist,labteam,twonurses,andaphysicianfromCalifornia.TheystayedatahotelinHiguayincentralDominicanRepublic,aboutanhourridebycartotheirworksite.

Onthefirstday,ColinandSarahcollectedandorganizedallthedrugssotheyknewwhattheyhadavailabletothem.“Eachmedicalmissionbringsandleavesbehindmedicationsandsupplies,”Colinsays.“Wealsobroughtandshippedstuffdownsoitwasimportanttolayitalloutandbepreparedinordertodoourjobsandhelppeopleaseffectivelyaspossible.”

Afterdrivingmilesandmilesthroughsugarplantations,theycameacrossbatays,orcorporatelyownedvillagesthatwerebuiltinthemiddleofthesugarplantations.“Wesetupclinicsinsmallvacantconcretechapelsthere,”hesays.“Ourgoalwastode-wormeveryonewithoralmedication.Itwasastandardprotocol.Everychildwhocamethroughtobeseenforsomething,andwhowasoldenough,wasgivenatabletintheirmouth.”

Itwasprettychaoticattimes.“Therewerepeopleeverywhereoutsidethechapel,look-inginandcongregating.Wehadtofocusonthechildrenandtheelderlywhowerereallyinpainandcouldhardlywalk,”saysColin.

Apatientwouldgetdirectedtoeitherthedentistorthedoctoruponarrival.“Theden-tist’sjobwasprettystraightforward,”Colinsays.“Thephysician,workingthroughtrans-lators,founditalotharderbecausehedidn’tcompletelyknowwhatdrugswehad.Manytimeshewouldjustsendussymptoms,andwewouldberesponsiblefortreatingthem.”

Ahighvolumeofvitamins,antifungalsforringworm,antibioticsforinfection,andTy-

lenolandibuprofenforpainwereprimarilywhatmadeupthecouplehundredprescrip-tionsthatpassedthroughthepharmacyeachday.“Otherwise,wejustprescribedalotofhopeandattention,”Colinexplains.“Peoplecanbesohappywhentheyhavesolittle.Thesepeopleneededmedicalcare,sanitation,andrunningwater,yettheyradi-atedhappinessjustbecausewegavethemattentionandprovidedthemwiththemostbasiccare.Theyweresoappreciative.”

ColinandSarahinsistthattheyweretheoneswhowerechangedandhumbledbytheexperience.“Thistripshapedusintowhowearetoday,individuallyandasacouple,”saysSarah.“Itwasextremelyreward-ingformetobeapartofamissiontohelppeopleinneedofmedicalcare,usingmyeducationandworkingtogetherwithmyhusband.Manyofthesepeopleliveinpainanddiscomfortbecausetheydonothaveaccesstomedicalcare,noraretheyedu-catedonproperhygienepractices.Itmayseemlikebasiccaretous,buttothemitmakestheirqualityoflifesomuchbetter.”

“Thesepeopleneededmedicalcare,sanitation,andrunningwater,yettheyradiatedhappinessjustbecausewegavethemat-tentionandprovidedthemwiththemostbasiccare.”
