  • 4For many of us, family is at the center of everything we do. Relationshipsinfluence how we work, learn, play, relate to, and understand the world.Theres a myriad of sayings about putting family first, about family and unconditional love, and about home being where the heart is. Most of usunderstand family to be about positive relationships, trust, support, andlove. At Pressley Ridge, we know that family shouldnt be taken for granted, which is why we work to ensure that all children and families have thesupport they need to stay together and experience the joy of buildinghealthy, strong relationships.

We also know that daily stressors, minor setbacks, and severe traumaticevents can impact a familys bond. Because of this, we are committed toconnecting families to the resources and skills necessary to help themweather the storms of life and remain intact.

Through our Family Engagement Initiative, we are placing greater emphasison keeping families together and working in partnership with them forsuccess. When everyone understands the problem and is invested in finding a solution, no matter how severe the circumstances, success is morethan just a dream; families learn to trust and rely on each other, and theresults are long lasting.

As you read this report, you will see that our commitment to our missionto do whatever it takes to create success for children and families isstronger than ever. We currently serve more than 5,400 children annuallyand touch the lives of more than 10,000 families. Also highlighted are thenames of individuals, businesses, and organizations whose generosity makesit possible for us to continue our mission and to be able to offer our services to as many individuals as needed without barriers or constraints.

Pressley Ridge has always believed that family is the cornerstone of a childssuccess. What we learned this past year is how to infuse this belief intoevery facet of our organization. We hope that you, too, believe in thepower of family and in each kids future.

We are pleased to share this annual report with you and are grateful foryour support. It takes all of us working together with our families, friends, and communities to bring about positive, long lasting change. This is exactlywhat we strive to accomplish each day.

    Sincerely,

R aised in foster homes and residential programs, Sasha had a tough time growing up. As a twenty-two-year-oldmother, her goal was to protect her children, ages two andfour, from experiencing a childhood as traumatic as hers.Unfortunately, Sasha was dealing with untreated mentalhealth issues and was homeless. These conditions resultedin her children being placed in respite care.It pained Sasha to have her children taken away from her her service coordinatorsaid she cried uncontrollably during the intake process. Sasha was also very frankabout her experience growing up in the child welfare system, where her service co-ordinator said she grew accustomed to being acted upon. Sasha said she had manyfailed relationships with human services professionals. No one had ever asked herwhat she needed or explained to her that is was okay to voice her concerns. Sashadistrusted the system, but Pressley Ridge and its focus on treatment for the wholefamily changed all of that.

Our team put special emphasis on encouraging Sasha to give them feedback during visits, family therapy, and when she and her kids received other services. At first, Sasha was hesitant to accept our help. Over time, though, she realized thatwe were really taking her concerns seriously. Knowing that we cared about making her comfortable and valued her insight gave Sasha the confidence she needed to be the leader of her own treatment as well as her childrens.

Soon, Sasha secured financial support to purchase the medications necessary forstabilizing her mental health issues, found a job, and started renting an apartment. With some coaching, Sasha made strides in using respectful and assertive communication skills with her landlord and her childrens foster parents. For theold Sasha, it would have been easy to lash out at the foster parents when theywere late bringing the children to a visit, but the new Sasha used self-soothingtechniques to cope with the delay and learned to be patient.

At a recent court hearing, Sasha thanked the judge for the services shes received. She admitted to being angry when her children were first removed from hercare. Now, she sees that after treatment, she is more capable of providing themwith a healthy and stable home life. Sasha is ready to reunify with her children.

Sasha feared that her children would fall into the same cycle of neglect and maltreatment that she experienced. She feared that the system would continueto disappoint her. With Pressley Ridge, Sasha learned for the first time that peopledo care and that she could get better. We never gave up on her. We knew shecould transform. Sasha just needed to see it for herself.

W e know them asWendy and Mary AnnStephens. Pressley Ridge foster childrenknow them as memory makers. Wendy and Mary Ann have committed over two decades to caring for foster teens. In September 2014, the sisters were featured in a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette story about Allegheny Countys campaign for more foster parents.

Wendy and Mary Ann come from a family of 16 children. According to the women, their positive upbringing inspired them to be foster parents. I got to think about how fortunate we were growing up, having both of our families,Wendy told the Post-Gazette. The sisters have made it their mission to give happy memories to those with difficult home lives.

Tim is one of 15 childrenWendy and Mary Ann have cared for, and hespeaks fondly of them and his experience in the foster environment. There are some really good teens out there who just want people tolove them, he said.

Neither woman has biological children, but its clear that every child intheir care receives motherly love. It was worth it, all the sleepless nights I went through,Wendy said while recalling a particularly troubled child with whom she still keeps in touch.

Tim is one ofWendy and Mary Anns success stories. He is a freshmanin high school aspiring to study cyber security in college. The goal forchildren in foster care is generally reunification, but its clear that the imprint foster parents make is lasting. Tim now lives with his biological mom, but he hopes to care for the sisters as they grow older.

Whats more is Tim plans to take Stephens as his middle name to express his gratitude to the sisters. Wendy and Mary Ann areequally as appreciative. A sentimental Wendy elaborated, He said,[You] are my extended family, [and] that really touched me.

T here are a lot of stereotypes about adolescents theyre slackers, full of angst, moody. For Mark, fittingone of these stereotypes would have been a blessing.Mark, now a 42-year-old federal security officer, came toPressley Ridge in his early teens. He described himself aslost, needing structure, and abandoned. Mark grew up in a home of physical and verbal abuse. His father left hismother, and he and his siblings lived in and out of group homes, eventuallyseparated through foster care or adoption. I did everything without a family around me, Mark said.

Initially, Mark was living in a residential facility and commuting to PressleyRidge for services, but over time, he was enrolled in our Day School andTreatment Foster Care programs. Ultimately, Mark said, Pressley Ridgeended up being a healthier environment for him.

I turned out better because of Pressley Ridge, he explained. PressleyRidge offered me structure, but let me be myself. They worked around my individual needs.

Though Mark was a high school drop out, he eventually went to college. In his 20s, he worked as a security guard for two universities. He saidbeing around college-educated students encouraged him to get his actstraight. He joined the U.S. Navy and did three tours in Iraq.

According to James, a Pressley Ridge family liaison specialist whoworked with Mark, the task for Mark was confronting his emotionsabout his home environment.

The real lesson was getting to a place where Mark understood hisfamily, but grew beyond the limitations of them . . . its about not letting the past determine your future.

Mark describes his situation as a head turner and said he knowsthat others who grow up in similar situations often continue tohave hardships, especially if they do not seek treatment.

Mark is proud to discuss his career, his marriage, and his neighborhood, but perhaps the moral of this story is most telling.Failure is not an option for me, he says.

W hen a mother flees with her children following reports of abuse, her situationmay seem hopeless. This was the case with Leslie, who came to Pressley Ridgeless than a year ago, along with her twoyoung daughters, to receive Intensive FamilyServices. Initially, authorities intervened and Leslies daughters were takenfrom her. Though Leslie had several goals she needed to accomplish before her family could be whole again, undergoing treatment by herselfwasnt going to be enough. The entire family needed to acquire skills for communication, relationship building, and maintaining togetherness.

Leslie and her daughters participated in supervised visitations and sessionswith a family therapist and mental health worker, meeting five days a weekat times. From the beginning, Leslie showed a true commitment to change, learning anything she could that would help her care for her children onher own. Leslie and her girls were always prepared for what therapy had to offer and open to any and all recommendations. Leslie also asked insightful questions and gained as much knowledge as she could fromPressley Ridge.

Because Leslies daughters were involved and able to see her grow andchange, the family was spending overnight visits together six months aftertreatment began. At a court hearing to regain custody, Leslies devotionto her children and recovery were evident. It was also clear that thegirls were eager to return to their mothers care.

The girls made a successful transition back to their mother, theirhome, and their school. Since reunifying with her children, Leslie consistently participates in on-going therapy and continues to be active and engaged in her familys treatment. Together, Leslie and her daughters are building a home of love and structure. Perhaps this is their greatest stride knowing that they can work together and depend on each other.

    ASH L EY AND H E R FAM I LY

Ive always known Ashley was different, her mom, Sarah, told Pressley Ridge. According to Sarah, Ashley has alwaysbeen ahead of the game: she started speaking at nine monthsold and by a year-and-a-half, she could count to twenty andname her shapes and colors. At four, Ashley knew states andcapitals. Theres never been anything shes failed at, Sarah said. You can imagine how heartbreaking it was, then, when after the passing ofher grandmother, Ashley started being defiant and arguing with her parents.

Ashleys grandmother held a special place in her life. Throughout much ofher childhood, Ashleys biological father was incarcerated, and growing up,she and her mom were more friends than mother and daughter. While her grandmother was nurturing, she was also the primary authority figure in Ashleys life. When she passed away, Ashley felt like she no longer had support.

Eventually, Ashleys behavior escalated. She started skipping class and hanging out with the wrong crowd. She went from being a straight A student to having a 0.37 GPA. After a brush with the law, Ashley was placed into treatment at Pressley Ridge.

At the Pressley Ridge White Oak residential facility, our counselors and staff offered Ashley and her parents the counseling and training they needed to reconnect as a family. Ashley received therapy to helpher cope with the loss of her grandmother and with the reentrance ofher father into her life. Her mother also received coaching on how toset rules and boundaries as a parent.

[Pressley Ridge] taught us to communicate something we needed. [They] helped strengthen the bond that had become unraveled by mistrust, hurtful words, and lack of respect, Sarah said. Now, Ashley and Sarah have a better relationship. Its not always perfect, Sarah admits, but everything is okay because theyhave learned to cope with and work through hard feelings.

Ashley also got back on track at school and excelled during hersecondary years. She did so well, she was awarded a scholarship to attend college. Now, Ashley is hoping to be a veterinarian, a lifelong dream of hers. According to Sarah, Ashley is stubbornand has a refuse-to-fail attitude. After seeing Ashley transformfrom a frustrated adolescent into a mature woman, all of us atPressley Ridge are confident that no matter what life throws at her, Ashley has the strength to persevere.
