Nuremberg, Germany. The Siemens Industry Automation Division has developed the Minerals Automation Standard to address the specific require ments in the mining industry. The standard uses the latest version 8.0 of the Simatic PCS 7 process con-trol system as system platform, ex-panded to include the specific auto-mation functions required in mining applications.

Demand for raw materials is growing worldwide. Mining companies are on the search for solutions which can be imple-mented far more quickly than before once investment approval has been granted. The focus is also on integrated solutions for improved productivity and efficiency. To address typical engineering and automation tasks in the mining in-dustry, Siemens has developed the Mine-rals Automation Standard. The standard aims at cutting plant downtimes and reducing operating and maintenance costs, while increasing plant availability and productivity. The new standard is ba-sed on the functionality of the Cemat system, which has already been in suc-cessful use for over 35 years in the ce-ment industry. Both systems make use of the open, flexibly scalable Simatic PCS 7 process control system. Using the latest version 8.0 as a system platform, the in-dustry-specific software packages of the Minerals Automation Standard are tailo-red to the specific tasks in the mining in-dustry in terms of their operating philoso-phy and their diagnostic, alarm and locking concept.

When installing the Minerals Automation Standard software packages, the mining industry functionality is integrated into

the Simatic PCS 7 system structure. This encompasses engineering components with special module libraries tailored to the needs of the mining industry, as well as automation components for control/closed-loop control, communication and also operation and monitoring. The ope-ration and monitoring components inclu-de amongst others redundancy and ar-chiving functions, a library for all control system objects with information, diagnos-tic and multimedia dialogs, an messaging system with industry-specific service

Bern, Switzerland. The City of Bern has a new tram depot fitted with a fail-safe controller from the Siemens In-dustry Automation Division. A Simatic S7-315 F monitors the contact lines and ensures that they are reliably switched off.

A failsafe Simatic S7-315 F controller from Siemens installed in the new tram depot in Bern has replaced the existing 30-year old system using dated open-air circuit breaker and earthing bar technolo-gy. The contact lines carry 600 volts and are switched by a failsafe Simatic S7-315F controller. Failsafe controllers are self-monitoring. If a lack of consistency is detected, they automatically switch to the safe mode. The system is operated using seven HMI MP 377 touch panels, and the distributed periphery is integrated via ET200 input/output modules.

To prevent excessive power consumption bringing Bern’s public transport system to a standstill, the contact lines are divided into six sectors. If power consumption in one sector exceeds admissible limits, it is automatically switched off. In a modern tram, up to 1000 amperes flow through the current collector, for instance when the air conditioning system is in operation. This is due to the fact that only a direct voltage of 600 volts is made available by the contact lines, causing correspondingly high levels of current to flow at high output. For histo-ric reasons, the Bernmobil trams travel using direct current at low voltage. This does away with the need for heavy trans-formers inside the vehicle and allows the motors to be simply actuated using resis-tance bridges.

Bernmobil is responsible for tram and bus services in the city of Bern. Since

1998, Bernmobil has been run as an in-dependent entity under public law. With five tram lines, three trolley bus lines and fourteen bus lines, the network moves 84 million passengers every year. Furrer+Frey, the solution partner awar-ded the contract to implement the new system, specializes in contact line construction for railways and tram lines.

Panels under the spotlightNuremberg, Germany. Trophies co-ming thick and fast: the Siemens In-dustry Automation Division trailer for Simatic HMI(Human Machine Inter-face) Comfort Panels has been sho-wered with prestigious industrial film awards. The latest accolade to be con-ferred on the video is the “Golden Dolphin”, which was presented in Oc-tober at the Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards.

The film trailer featuring the Siemens operator panels clearly demonstrates that industrial products can be success-fully advertised using motion pictures. The prize-winning video graphically illus-trates the many benefits of Simatic HMI Comfort Panels, which offer a whole ran-ge of different functions designed to per-mit the control and monitoring of industri-al automation systems.

In October 2012, the trailer fought off competition from 665 other contenders

from 35 nations at the third Cannes Cor-porate Media & TV Awards to win the “Golden Dolphin” in the “Fairs and Shows, Events and Meeting Openers” category. “Our aim was to make a video that would hold viewer interest and inclu-de the human element – all-important in a film about products at the man-machi-ne interface. One of the ways we achie-ved this was by featuring human hand gestures”, explains Reiner Tschaban, responsible Marketing Communications Manager in the Siemens Division.

This most recent trophy is the latest in a series of awards already conferred on the trailer: starting with the Certificate for Creative Excellence in the “Advertising/Marketing: Business-to-Business” cate-gory which was awarded at the US Inter-national Film and Video Festival 2012. This was followed by a place among the finalists at the 25th International Corpo-rate Film Festival in Vienna (Austria) in the “Trade fair films and events” catego-

ry. The film took first place at the Inter-national Film Festival in Houston/USA in the category “Marketing/Sales Industry”, making it the winner of the prestigious Gold Remi. As early as December 2011, the video was distinguished with the “Master of Excellence” accolade in the Sales Promotion and Product Presentati-on category at the 23rd Corporate Media 2011.

The video was commissioned by Sie-mens and produced by the film agency Maximilian Film GmbH in Munich.

… that the Esslingen-based company Eberspächer, a globally active partner to the automotive industry, uses Siemens NX software for its product development? The company uses the CAD system to fast-track its product development and pro-duction, and to ensure on-schedule delivery to its automotive customers.

Customer specifications and requirements using CAD sys-tems are what determine product development in the automo-tive industry. Eberspächer added the NX system from Sie-mens to its already existing systems for a big automotive OEM customer. This has afforded Eberspächer the greater flexibility it needs to get to grips with the growing diversity of different model variants, ever increasing volumes of data and greater complexity.

Alongside exhaust and vehicle heating systems which were the mainstay of the company’s supply range to vehicle ma-nufacturers back at the beginning of the 1930s, Eberspächer’s portfolio now also includes AC systems for buses as well as vehicle electronics and vehicle networking with automotive bus systems.

Did you know …?…that the Italian company Duraldur SpA uses Femap software from Siemens PLM Software to simulate digital prototypes for the development and production of precisi-on components for combustion engines? By changing over to Femap, the time-consuming and cost-intensive physical testing which previously had to be performed has been significantly reduced. The new system also per-mits Duraldur to respond far more quickly to customer re-quests.

Using Femap, the medium-sized company is able to per-form detailed thermal and mechanical analysis of the data and calculations used in the development and production of new precision components. This allows Duraldur to sol-ve any problems occurring on the customer’s premises directly at the PC, saving time and costs. Leaders in the motoring industry for more than sixty years, Duraldur SpA (Duraldur) specializes in the production of cast and mol-ded pistons for all types of engines, as well as cylinders and winged liners for internal combustion engines.
