NRMA INSURANCE WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS COACH TONY POPOVIC SAYS THE HYUNDAI A-LEAGUE’S NEWEST CLUB IS IN THE PROCESS OF MAkING ITS HOME GROUND A VERY DIFFICULT ENVIRONMENT FOR VISITING TEAMS - AND THAT THE FANS ARE PLAYING A BIG PART IN THAT.

“It’s the same in any competition all over the world - if you can compile a good record at home you’re on the road to achieving something worthwhile,” Popovic said ahead of today’s clash with Melbourne Heart.

“We’re not getting ahead of ourselves at the Wanderers, but we feel we’re building something - and a big part of that is our

improving record at home. We want other teams to not look forward to coming here.”

The Wanderers have good memories against the Heart. When the two teams played at Parramatta Stadium in Round Five, the Wanderers won 2-1 to record their first home win at their third try.

Before that, the Wanderers had drawn with Central Coast Mariners and lost to Sydney FC at home. After beating the Heart, the Wanderers lost their next two home games - against Newcastle Jets and Melbourne Victory - in a reminder that you’ve got to crawl before you can walk.

The Wanderers had just the one win, one draw and three losses at home at that stage. They were doing better away from home, but since then their home results have improved dramatically.

Four games - all against competition

heavyweights - have brought three wins and just the one loss. The Wanderers beat Brisbane Roar 1-0, Adelaide United 6-1 and the Victory 2-1, and lost 2-0 to competition leaders the Mariners. That takes their home record to four wins, four losses and one draw.

The home crowds have been rising in number and getting louder in voice all along, and the Wanderers players have regularly remarked about how big a plus it is to have such fanatical crowd support.

Popovic, with his vast experience as a player in Australia and overseas, knows the value of it as well - and is keen for it to continue and get even bigger.

“The fans have been a great support for us,” Popovic said. “They don’t just physically support the team by turning up for games - they are extremely vocal. That gives our

players a lift and reminds the visiting players that they’re on foreign ground.

“Support like that can help keep players going in a tough game - and the record shows we’ve usually been very strong towards the end of our games at home. We’re attracting a strong support base, and the fans are clearly enjoying the experience.”

After failing to score in either of their first two games at home, the Wanderers have become much more adept at scoring there. The game against Adelaide was the breakout one, with six goals in a performance that stunned the Hyundai A-League and announced that the Wanderers had truly arrived.

They backed that up with two goals against the Victory, squaring the ledger with a win in that game after losing to the same team at Parramatta Stadium earlier in the season, before failing to get on the score sheet against the Mariners.

But the loss to Central Coast was another learning experience against a quality opponent - and the Wanderers have proved with their results that they are learning something every time they play. C

IT TAkES A SPECIAL kIND OF FOOTBALLER TO TRIUMPH WHEN THE GAME THROWS OBSTACLES YOUR WAY – AND IT’S THE ABILITY TO BATTLE THROUGH THOSE HITCHES THAT HAS SPURRED YOUNGSTER JOEY GIBBS.

The 20-year-old’s football journey has its ebbs and flows, and it is these experiences that have made him the player that he exuviates today.

“I’ve gotten better and I hope to keep getting better as well – it’s enjoyable but it’s also a lot of hard work,” Gibbs said.

From the Central Coast of New South Wales - the striker played for his local club before his potential was noticed by Western Sydney Premier League club Blacktown City Demons.

His talent earned him a transfer across Sydney to Manly United – with the Northern Beaches club awarding Gibbs the Lucas Neill Scholarship and an opportunity to attend trials overseas.

He returned to Australia with a wealth of experience and one that Gibbs credits as allowing him to mature as a player.

That maturity was met with regular first-grade appearances – catching the attention of Hyundai A-League club Sydney FC.

The forward remembers training alongside plenty of experienced players including his coach now at Western Sydney Wanderers – Tony Popovic.

His lucky break was met with some disaster – Gibbs fell victim to double stress fractures in both feet and was forced to watch the first half of the season from the sideline.

The goal poacher’s return to the fold was capped off with his first Hyundai A-League appearance – replacing Alex Brosque in the 2009-2010 Grand Final against Melbourne Victory at Etihad Stadium.

“It was a good experience and I definitely didn’t expect that,” he says.

On the back of that rewarding experience – another one was on the cards in Belgium.

“I was there for six months and it didn’t really work out.

“They promised a lot and nothing came.

“It was just a mix of troubles - I think with the financial crisis at the time and they were hoping for investors that never came.

“It was exciting at the start because you think everything is going to go well

but it didn’t really turn out that way.“I reckon it’s a good life

experience to know that things always don’t go your way.”

The beauty of hindsight means the striker doesn’t shy away from the horrible feeling and lack of motivation he had upon returning home.

“The quicker you get on with it - it is the best thing,” Gibbs said.

“I was obviously disappointed, and lost a bit of confidence and being a bit down affected my games.

“I think that probably lasted too long and I snapped out of by the time I went to Marconi.

“Then things started to happen once I put in the effort.”

A bright season back in the Premier League granted Gibbs another opportunity to try his luck in the national competition – this time with the new Western Sydney club.

Gibbs came to the forefront of potential player signings under Popovic after he scored four goals in the Wanderers first trial game at St Marys on July 25 last year.

“I think everything just fell for me that night – it’s hard to say but I definitely didn’t think it hurt my cause,” he said.

“In the end I think it was always down to the coach and he took his time making the decision.”

That decision meant Gibbs was not included in Popovic’s inaugural squad.

“I’m happy he made the decision because I’m happy with where I am now,” he said.

The experience of his younger self in Europe ensured there was no repeat this time around – Gibbs playing his

part in Marconi’s successful season. The goals put Gibbs back on

the radar and it wasn’t just the Wanderers who had noticed.

“I was very surprised because I was actually planning to go to Mariners Youth team but I couldn’t not take up the opportunity at Western Sydney,” he said.

A real advocate of what the club stands for – Gibbs’ exemplifies a battler and finds enjoyment in hard work.

“I think that’s how it should be and it’s showing with our results,” he said.

“You can’t really have any other attitude at this club or else you won’t last so I think it’s important to wanting to improve and be better.”

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Age 28 Height 176cm Weight 72kgPosition Right Back Clubs Parramatta Eagles; Sydney Olympic and Sydney FC in Australia and Waitakere United in New Zealand

A young Cole plied his trade in the New South Wales Premier League for clubs like APIA Leichhardt and Parramatta Eagles - before wanting to take the professional footballer career path seriously. The then 22-year-old set out on stints to the United States – as well as trials in England and Israel. Cole’s month at Doncaster Rovers proved to be a rewarding experience but he returned home to sign for Sydney Olympic in 2007. He was instrumental in the club’s successful season and his flair was noted by Hyundai A-League club Sydney FC. Cole signed a one year contract with the Sky Blues and was later rewarded with a three year extension. He was heralded throughout the competition as a ‘dead-ball specialist’ scoring stunning free-kicks for Sydney over rivals like Central Coast Mariners and Melbourne Victory. His time at Sydney FC was capped off by winning the prestigious Hyundai A-League double in 2009-2010 when the squad won both the Premiership and Grand Final over Melbourne Victory. Cole was recruited by Tony Popovic for the Wanderers inaugural season. He’s proved to be a solid link to the chain of defenders and can always be counted for the big occasions. He confirmed his commitment to the club and culture by agreeing to sign with the Wanderers for next season – and he’ll make sure he stands tall against the Heart’s bolstered attack.

Age 31 Height 180cm Weight 73kgPosition Striker Clubs West Ham United; Leyton Orient; Colchester United; Hull City in England

The Perth-born striker began his journey at 15 – when he was asked to join West Ham United’s Youth Academy. He signed a professional contract with the English club a couple of years later. He made his first team debut for West Ham against Reading a in 2000 in a League Cup match. He moved to Colchester United in 2004. Garcia made a good start with 30 appearances and six goals at his new club in the 2004-05 Season but his following one was most rewarding. Garcia helped bring the club to second place in League One and promotion to the Championship. After signing a new contract with the club in 2006, he scored Colchester’s first goal of the season in the Championship against Birmingham City. With 21 goals across all competitions for Colchester he signed a three-year-contract with Hull City in 2007. He scored a 35-yard bolter against Burnley in March and was voted Hull’s ‘Goal of the Season’ for 2007-08. He started in his first top flight game against Fulham. In a good year for the Garcia – he received his first international cap in a friendly against South Africa. In 2010, he was selected by Pim Verbeek to represent his country in the World Cup. Melbourne Heart enlisted Garcia’s services for Season 8. His exceptional skills in and around the box, and competitive edge saw him score his first Socceroos goal against Guam in the 2013 EAFF East Asian Cup game. Known to make the most of his opportunities in front of goals - it’ll be a tough task for the Wanderers defence to keep him under wraps.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A

WANDERER?

MICHAEL BEAUCHAMP

“I don’t know if I can really put into words but the way that it does make me feel is very honoured. One – being the captain but two is being able to lead a team that has become a massive thing our here in the West. Obviously each week you can see the crowd figures are getting bigger, and it’s a great achievement. It’s an honour to be part of something special and that’s getting thrown around a lot now by everyone. From the beginning we knew something was going to happen here but to expect what it has turned into is just different. I don’t think anyone could have predicted it. I can’t believe the copious amount of people wearing the red and black jerseys on the weekends. It’s amazing that things have turned around so fast for us and gone so big really quickly. I am proud to be part of something that is fantastic and it has been a long time coming in the West. Not many people get to enjoy something that is new and for me it’s another great experience.”

SHINJI ONO

“It is one thing that is part of my life now. This is actually what I call my second house, of course, my first is Japan. My family is the people I work with – my team mates, the coaching staff and all the people who work for the club. The fans are a big energy and they are always behind us which amazes me. Like when we are getting tired in a game – we listen to the fans. There are the ones who are on the speakers and those who sing all the songs. We hear them and we are lifted. It’s an amazing experience that I have enjoyed a lot. Before I came to Australia, I wasn’t sure about the Hyundai A-League and the level of football I would be playing. But since then, the standard has been so high. Our players have the best motivation for every training session and all of our games. There is a great sense of professionalism. Of course I am proud.”

TAREk ELRICH

“It’s a good feeling to represent the West of Sydney – my home-town and where I grew up. As a kid you always dreamed about playing in front of your friends and family in a massive crowd. I left a club that I was at for seven years which wasn’t easy. I am here now and fitted back in because I feel at home. Our team culture is about giving 110% in training and in games, and off the pitch as well. Everyone is honest with each other amongst all the coaching staff and players – we all get along. We don’t live that close to one another because Sydney is a big place but we tend to hang out even after training. This shows again how strong the culture is at the club and it is so great to be part of this movement. We had such a short time to get a team together and then to build a culture with the fans - but from day one those supporters have been great. They are always singing and chanting. We pride ourselves on giving our all on the pitch but obviously by us getting the job done – we ensure the club keeps connecting with our fans.”

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A WANDERER?

Page 11: PRESSURE ON IN WANDERLAND€¦ · with Central Coast Mariners and lost to Sydney FC at home. After beating the Heart, the Wanderers lost their next two home games - against Newcastle

A FAN BASE WITH FLAIRFirstly, who would have thought that the Western Sydney Wanderers organisation could take off like this in its first season? I didn’t.

I was under the impression that it would take a number of years to establish such a fan base and I never expected the demand for Western Sydney Wanderers jerseys to surpass the supply.

The WSW’s are the ‘One Direction’ of the football community right now - (a slight exaggeration - but you get the gist) and I feel so privileged to be a part of the hysteria.

I had a great five years with Sydney FC, especially in 2009 when we won the title. It was a hard decision to leave the Sky Blues. I had received so much support from the club - all the way from Stefan Kamasz, to Alan Stajic, to Sunny the physio.

I have been asked many times over the past few months whether I ‘made the right choice’ to move to the Wanderers. I can say without any hesitation – yes. Last week’s game against Sydney FC confirmed that for me.

I have played in front of 40,000 people at the Azteca stadium in Mexico, and a crowd of over 20,000 in Los Angeles and Denver - but playing in front of a crowd of 2,000 at Campbelltown Stadium in our final game will go down as one of the many highlights in my career. It may sound silly, but never did I think that I would experience that at home - (and when I mean home I mean home; born and raised in Campbelltown).

I know that it meant the world to my other teammates as well. Yes, the Red and Black Bloc turned up wearing our colours and waving their flags, but it was their constant singing and cheering for 90 minutes that impressed me most - both when we scored and when we conceded. You made us feel like rockstars!

I did not even score a goal in that game, yet I have been sent several photos of myself fly-kicking in front of the RBB after a teammate scored to level the match. I could not contain my excitement when I saw those images.

This lot are growing in numbers daily – and I plan to join them at some stage this year.

I have seen the word ‘passion’ being thrown around to describe the Western Sydney Wanderers fan base. Passion is the guy who turned up in Canberra last Tuesday night, standing alone behind our attacking goal, chanting the RBB songs for the entire 90 minutes. Passion is the fact that he got louder and louder as each goal was scored against us. By the 5th goal that we conceded, he was basically screaming at the top of his lungs. Although we lost that game 5-0, he was still there again the following week to support us.

In regards to the Wanderers A-League squad and their ridiculous following at Parramatta Stadium - I am not naïve and I do realise the impact that good results can have on attendance. But there is something different about this lot. I feel as though they have been waiting in the shadows for the opportunity to show the world who they are. The opportunity to follow a team who represents everything they stand for. Really, we should not be so shocked that this fan base was created so quickly. In fact, they were always there - they just didn’t have a name yet.

SOS CAGON (WE ARE THE TERRACE)

Type Chant

Notes This chant originated from Argentinian super club River Plate. It is one of the key RBB chants and represents the party atmosphere they wish to create. It often starts with Capo (the captain) yelling the first line through the megaphone with the terrace starting from the second. During the first part of the chant supporters should keep their arms outstretched above their heads, then clap after each line.

Chant We are the terrace Clap x 3 Of the RBB Clap x 3 Supporting the famous Clap x 3 West Sydney Clap x 3 We love this city Clap x 3 We love this team Clap x 3 Shoulder to shoulder Clap x 3 Together we sing!

At this point the chant changes tune. People start jumping up and down, pogo, doing other hand movements such as waving scarves around.

Wanderers Wanderers Wanderers Wanderers Wanderers Wanderers Wanderers Wanderersssssssssss

POPEYE (COME ON YOU WANDERERS)

Type Chant

Notes This is a British influenced chant created by the RBB. It should be performed with hands outstretched at the start.

Chant Come on you Wanderers Clap x 2 Come on you Wanderers Clap x 2 We’ll always love you never betray you No clapping, leave arms stretched out.

Come on you Wanderers Clap x 2

STREETS OF WESTERN SYDNEY

Type Chant

Notes This is to the tune of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s hit song Bad Moon Rising. The second RBB should be sung loud and there should be a pause between the first and second call of RBB.

Chant We’re from the streets of Western Sydney Home of the mighty RBB RBB! We will follow you forever Always will we be by your side

Come on come on Wanderers Come on come on Wanderers Come on come on come on come on Wanderers

ROUND 15 VS CENTRAL COAST MARINERS FC AT PARRAMATTA STADIUM

The NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers pressed the experienced Central Coast Mariners outfit from the start to the final whistle, and it was only a little luck and a few puzzling decisions that combined to bring them down.

The match was marred by several contentious decisions and referee Chris Beath enraged the majority of the 16,387-crowd, the second biggest in the Club’s history, and the Wanderers coaching staff with an inexplicable performance.

His urgency to hand several key Wanderers yellow cards in the first half that proved costly later in the match.

The most telling blow to the home team was the two yellow cards to midfielder Jason Trifiro who left his team a man down in the 54th minute.

To be fair, both challenges were clear yellow cards and the rest of the team lifted in their work rate in the hot conditions to make amends.

Trifiro and Mariner Mile Sterjovski had some early chances on goal but were easily dealt with by both goalkeepers.

Kwabena Appiah-Kubi, who replaced suspended Youssouf Hersi on the flank, looked dangerous in attack and provided some exciting runs and opportunities for the red and blacks.

His speed and agility troubled the Mariners’ backline in the 14th minute when he took on two defenders and

only narrowly missed to the near-side.In the 24th minute, Joey Gibbs was

storming towards goal only to be taken down in a late tackle by Trent Sainsbury, who was the last line of defence.

Amazingly, Sainsbury only received a yellow card from Beath despite Gibbs having 20m of clear space and the keeper to beat when he was taken down.

The subsequent free kick taken by Aaron Mooy was strong, but high and wide.

Shannon Cole was unlucky not to put the Wanderers on the scoreboard in the 31st minute when his cross was only just cut off by keeper Matthew Ryan under pressure.

The Mariners were able to make the first impact on the scoreboard in the 41st minute, when Daniel McBreen was able to beat two Wanderer defenders with some fancy footwork, before slotting the ball past Ante Covic at close range.

The Wanderers started the second half with some fierce attack and looked to be the more dominant team early-on.

This was evident in the 50th minute when an unbelievable goal line foot block from Pedj Bojic denied Ono’s bullet shot inches from the line.

It had looked a certain goal. The Wanderers went a man down in

the 54th minute when Trifiro was sent off after receiving his second yellow.

Substitute Labinot Haliti had the desired effect immediately after coming on in the 66th minute, when two of his headers narrowly missed their target, both going over the top of the cross-bar.

McBreen was able to put the icing on the cake for the Mariners in the late stages of extra time after a defensive mix-up gave him the opportunity to put a shot from outside the 18 yard box in the back of an empty Wanderers goal.

ROUND 16 VS WELLINGTON PHOENIx FC AT WESTPAC STADIUM

A ruthlessly executed second half saw the NRMA Western Sydney Wanderers beat the Wellington Phoenix into submission to score an impressive 2-0 win at Westpac Stadium on Sunday.

Central defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley scored his first goal for the new team with a spectacular diving header in the 71st minute after a dangerous low and curling cross from Mooy.

Striker Labinot Haliti made the most of one of his few starts in recent times with a busy game.

He was rewarded with a tap-in goal after overwhelming pressure on the Phoenix defence saw him virtually played onto goal by a blunder by Ben Sigmund in the 82nd minute.

It was another piece of mastery

by coach Tony Popovic who rested marquee player Shinji Ono on the bench for 75 minutes, saving him up for the battles ahead.

Phoenix’s Belgian striker Stein Huysegems had a solid chance in the 6th minute with a scorching run into the box, only to be shut down by centre back pairing Michael Beauchamp and Nikolai Topor-Stanley in a classic sandwich movement.

His shot ended up being a simple save for Ante Covic.

Youssouf Hersi looked the most dangerous for the visitors causing plenty of problems wide on the right.

In the 13th minute, Huysegems found himself loose in the box but not quite close enough to a dangerous dipping cross in the wind from the left with an open goal in front of him.

In the 18th minute, a sweeping sequence of ball movement involving Poljak, Mark Bridge, Hersi and Haliti deserved better.

In the 22nd minute the home team had the best chance of the half.

Huysegems’ right foot strike struck the woodwork high on the right after a nice back pass back by Louis Fenton.

Fenton was again in the thick of it a few minutes later when he beat D’Apuzzo three times and let off a worthwhile strike.

The most controversial moment of the first half happened in the final 20 seconds.

Haliti received the ball through a back pass from Hersi on the edge of the box.

As he prepared to shoot he was poleaxed by a flying tackle from defender Sigmund from behind.

The reckless challenge missed the ball completely.

It was a clear foul and either a penalty or a free kick and a howling mistake by referee Shaun Evans.

The Wanderers came out of the sheds looking ten feet tall.

In the 46th minute Haliti fired a good left shot to force a neat save from Mark Paston with a stretching right hand.

Two minutes later Beauchamp

showed his pace by matching the dangerous Huysegems for 40m then taking the ball on the edge of the box with a sweeping tackle.

Bridge had a great chance in the 54th minute, chesting a ball for control before firing a powerful short straight at Paston who was beginning to look stressed.

Less than a minute later Haliti was played into the box but sprayed his shot left and into the side netting.

The last gasp of life from Wellington came in the form of some frustrated and cheap challenges and a running battle between Mooy and Vince Lia and Dani Sanchez saw the yellow card produced after some pushing and shoving.

But the hosts were finally put to the sword when a wonderful low and curling cross found its way onto the head of a diving Topor-Stanley and it powered through the hand of Paston for the first goal and the defender’s fifth in his 148-game career.

Haliti’s tap-in after Ben Sigmund knocked a long ball past his keeper and into the path of the charging striker was the result of a totally powerful team performance.

ROUND 17 VS BRISBANE ROAR FC AT SUNCORP STADIUM

The Wanderers’ two second half goals saw them peg back Brisbane Roar’s 1-0 first half lead to take the match 2-1 and cement themselves nine points clear in fourth position on the Hyundai A-League table.

One of the visitor’s better chances early occurred in the seventh minute when Shinji Ono was played through by striker Labinot Haliti and forced goalkeeper Michael Theo into a risky confrontation outside the box.

Theo just managed to clear the ball from Ono.

German midfielder Thomas Broich let shots off on goal in the 16th and 17th minutes, one missing left and

the other just over the crossbar. In the 22nd minute, Luke

Brattan crashed through Wanderer defenders into the box on the back of a good ball from Besart Berisha.

The ball careered off Brattan in the challenge and straight to Mitch Nichols who slotted the goal in from close range.

The Wanderers bounded out of the sheds and showed the intensity they missed in the first stanza and are now becoming renowned for.

Haliti grazed the crossbar in the 51st minute and Bridge missed a good chance wide after being played on by Youssouf Hersi one minute later.

In the 64th minute, Jerome Polenz swerved in wide from the right and faked to cross only to slide a neat low pass to Bridge who was in front of goal just outside the box.

He calmly slotted a right foot shot through the outstretched hand of Theo and into the right corner of the net.

Four minutes later, Dino Kresinger, only just on for Haliti, headed a ball into the path of an offside Ono who had the good sense to leave it for a flying Hersi.

Hersi cleverly jinked to fool two defenders before belting a left foot shot low inside the near post, leaving Theo no chance from six metres.

Roar were shell-shocked and as if on cue, Berisha went on a rampage at the officials earning him a yellow card.

Captain Shane Stefanutto got another card a few minutes later and the game locked like it would deteriorate with Roar losing all discipline.

The Wanderers kept coming and through some lovely work from Aaron Mooy, Ono found himself free in the box with only the keeper to beat in the 92nd minute.

But the marquee man’s jink and turn could not shake the defence as they arrived in numbers and another goal went begging.

ROUND 11 VS CANBERRA UNITED AT MCkELLAR PARk

Canberra United defeated Western Sydney Wanderers in a 5-0 demolition at McKellar Park.

Following the abandoned fixture on the weekend before both teams elected to play the same XI that started the aborted game at McKellar Park.

Wanderers forward Catherine Cannuli was looking especially lively early in and, after sending a shot into the side-netting from an angle, the striker linked up well with her front-line partner Sarah Walsh to create a second opening with the space of a few minutes.

This time her shot did beat Mackenzie Arnold in the United goal from the same angle, but crashed back off the base of the post.

Raso was giving the Wanderers defence plenty to think about and from one lung-bursting run she cut the ball back to Jennifer Bisset in a good position but the midfielder rather dragged her shot and the move petered out.

United finally burst into action just past the half hour mark as Raso was denied by a smart save from Thora Helgadottir after an electrifying run into the area. The reprieve was short-lived for the Wanderers though as from the resultant corner Canberra took the lead.

Caitlin Cooper met the cross with a firm header and, after Ellie Brush had stabbed the ball towards goal, Raso was on hand to turn it over the line from close range.

Having taken the lead things got even better for Canberra a minute before the interval as they doubled their advantage. Raso was again heavily involved showing sensational pace to skin the full back and lay a perfect square pass to Michelle Heyman who broke her eight-match goal drought with a side-foot finish from six yards.

Awarded a free-kick on the near side as Raso was impeded for the umpteenth time, Caitlin Munoz lined up her effort and her curving cross-shot deceived Helgadottir and the ball curled at the perfect angle to drop over her head and into the back of the net.

There was more to come to delight the home support as three became four with eight minutes to play. Munoz was again heavily involved as her in swinging corner struck the unsighted Vanessa Hart on the thigh and pinged into the back of the net.

There was a fifth goal to come, one that equalled the club’s record victory, and it came from US import Mewis on her debut.

Collecting a through ball, Mewis controlled and picked her spot, slotting past the advancing Helgadottir to make the score 5-0 and round out the action in some style.

ROUND 12 VS SYDNEY FC AT CAMPBELLTOWN STADIUM

Sydney FC produced a strong performance to overcome Western Sydney 3-2 in their Round 12 clash at Campbelltown Stadium.

Sydney opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Alanna Kennedy found space on the right wing and her low cross was met at the near post by Caitlin Foord.

On 23 minutes Alesha Clifford went close to levelling the scores but her well-hit shot drew a fine save from Shamiran Khamis in the Sydney goal.

On the half-hour mark, the Wanderers had their equaliser. With the Sydney FC defence giving Louise Fors room to move, she made them pay from range, her stunning 25-yard shot curling into the bottom corner past the outstretched hand of Khamis.

Five minutes before the break Sydney FC regained the lead, and once again it came from a cross. This time Ellyse Perry’s delivery from the right wing was met with a great headed finish by Samantha Kerr.

Perry had a chance to extend Sydney’s lead in first-half injury-time, but her strong header was denied by a wonderful save from Thora Helgadottir in the Wanderers’ goal.

The second half saw the game open up, with both sides having more space and time in midfield. However, for large sections of the half, neither side were able to transform this increased space into meaningful attempts on goal.

With 17 minutes remaining, the match was all square once again. Louise Fors was brought down in the area and a penalty was awarded. She picked herself up and took the spot kick, sending the keeper the wrong way and calmly slotting the ball into the bottom right-hand corner for her second goal.

Then, with six minutes to go, Sydney took the lead for the third time. A great through-ball in traffic from Samantha Kerr left Nicola Bolger one-on-one with the keeper. Bolger was then able to finish neatly with her first touch of the game having only come on a minute prior.

WESTFIELD W-LEAGUE MATCH REVIEWS

Page 21: PRESSURE ON IN WANDERLAND€¦ · with Central Coast Mariners and lost to Sydney FC at home. After beating the Heart, the Wanderers lost their next two home games - against Newcastle

IN ITS INAUGURAL SEASON IN THE WESTFIELD W-LEAGUE, THE WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS DEBUT CAMPAIGN HAS BEEN ONE FULL OF TWISTS AND TURNS.

While teams such as Canberra United, Newcastle Jets, Brisbane Roar and Sydney FC had established the foundations of their squad months prior to the season commencing, the Wanderers W-League squad was only in its very early stages of development six weeks prior to their first match.

“I had only just found out that the Central Coast Mariners were not going to be in the competition when the position for coach of the Wanderers W-League squad was advertised,” said Coach Stephen Roche.

“I saw Western Sydney Wanderers as a fantastic opportunity to encourage NSW premier league players to get back into the league –there are enough players in Sydney to make two very competitive teams.”

Roche began to source players from the local NSW premier league, the New South Wales Institute of Sport and international players Thora Helgadottir and Louise Fors through their agents, with the team only being finalised three weeks into the competition.

Three months down the track, the Wanderers W-League squad has surpassed expectations in its first season - defeating competition heavyweights Brisbane Roar and Perth Glory and narrowly missing out on a finals position after their loss to reigning premiers Canberra United.

In the opening round of the competition, the Wanderers travelled away from home to Burton Park, where they met Adelaide United, a side looking to redeem themselves after finishing at the bottom of the table last season.

After cementing a firm 3-1 league into the latter stages of the second half, a resilient Adelaide United fought back in what can be penned as one of the most remarkable comebacks in W-league history.

With 15 minutes left on the clock, New Zealand import Sarah McLaughlin scored a hat-trick.

It was a somewhat shaky start for the Wanderers W-League in their first campaign, after controlling the vast majority of the game.

The newly established squad were still finding their feet in the second round of the competition, when they were narrowly defeated 1-0 by cross-city rivals Sydney FC at Leichhardt Oval.

But by the third round the Wanderers were beginning to establish momentum,

and they landed competition leaders Perth Glory a shock blow, securing their first win in a 2-0 victory.

As new kids on the block, flying under the radar, they now began to attract attention.

The team remained undefeated over the next three rounds of the competition - buoyed by the introduction of Icelandic national goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir and dynamic Swedish midfielder Louise Fors, who has proven to be one of the standout performers of the W-League this season.

The Wanderers secured a draw against Canberra United, a 2-1 win over minor premiers Brisbane Roar, and a 3-0 victory over Newcastle Jets.

Campbelltown Stadium proved to be a mid-season fortress for the ladies, with the team remaining undefeated at their home ground until round nine of the competition.

The squad were sitting within the top three of the competition at round eight after a convincing 4-0 win over Adelaide United - but losses to Perth Glory in round seven, Brisbane Roar in round nine and Melbourne Victory in round ten proved to be critical.

“The successful run we had at home was really enjoyable,” says Roche. “I

feel as though we did not play as well in the games where we had to travel this season and it may have disrupted preparation. We dropped critical points away from home and that is something we need to work on.”

With six teams all in contention for a finals position, the fate of the mighty Wanderers was only secured in the final week of the competition.

After making the arduous journey by coach to play Canberra United at McKellar Park in round 11, the game was postponed due to tumultuous weather conditions.

The team had to travel back to McKellar Park on a Tuesday night, with many squad members having to leave early from work or take the day off in order to return to the Nation’s Capital.

The Wanderers were defeated 5-0

by a resolute Canberra United side, who were able to capitalise on their opponent’s unfavourable predicament.

In arguably the Wanderers’ most thrilling and entertaining match of the season, the ladies returned to their fortress at Campbelltown Stadium in their final round to face Sydney FC in a local derby clash.

It was a must-win game for Sydney FC, who were trailing one point behind Canberra United and needed the three points to secure a highly coveted finals position.

The fate of Sydney FC looked to be sealed when Wanderers midfielder Louise Fors levelled the score to 2-2 in the 74th minute, but Sydney FC substitute Nicola Bolger produced a spectacular finish in the 84th minute to nudge the Sky Blues home and secure a spot in the finals for the young side.

In their last game for the season,

the Wanderers W-League squad showed their fans why they are highly respected by their opponents and a formidable force to be reckoned with; they were rewarded by a highly vocal and supportive crowd, with over 200 supporters creating an electric atmosphere and a memorable send-off for the squad.

Although the Wanderers did not achieve their internal goal of securing a finals berth, Roche says that he has considered it a privilege to coach the team in its inaugural season.

“It has been really exciting for me and Assistant Coach Lisa Warrener,” says Roche. “The league has really improved over the last two years and many of these players have proven what they are capable of doing. Players such as Alex Huynh and Vanessa Hart have really stepped up and driven the team. I am looking forward to next season and building on the squad.”

ROUND 11 VS CENTRAL COAST MARINERS FC AT COOk PARk

The Central Coast Mariners defeated the Western Sydney Wanderers at Cook Park with a 5-0 win.

After 12 minutes the Mariners opened the scoring.

Brad McDonald made an incisive run down the left touch line and cut the ball back into the box. The pass found Daniel Bragg whose sweetly-hit drive rifled past Jerrad Tyson in the Wanderers goal.

The Wanderers nearly had their equaliser on 29 minutes when a neat turn on the edge of the box by Mark Cindric resulted in a shot that drifted just over the cross bar.

Moments later they had another chance. A looping cross from Jayden Koulizakis found Alastair Quinn who was only denied by a fine double save from Mariners keeper Justin Pasfield.

A cleverly chipped through-ball from Adriano Pellegrino failed to be dealt with by the Wanderers’ defence and Anthony Caceres was on hand to deftly lob the ball over the advancing keeper for the Mariners’ second.

Two minutes into the second half and the Mariners had their third. A

loose pass coming out of defence by the Wanderers was pounced on by the Mariners and two quick passes found McDonald who curled the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

Mariners got their fourth with 20 minutes remaining. Mitchell Duke sprung the offside trap, running onto a well-weighted through-ball before calmly putting the ball past the keeper.

With seven minutes to go, the Wanderers had their best chance to open their account when the ball fell to Daniel Barac on the penalty spot. His shot hammered into the post and the follow up from Mark Cindric was hit straight at the keeper.

With three minutes to go Duke got his second and the Mariners’ fifth with a carbon-copy of his first goal to round out the visitors’ dominant display.

ROUND 12 VS SYDNEY FC AT CROMER PARk

Sydney FC defeated rivals Western Sydney Wanderers when they claimed a comfortable 4-1 derby victory.

Mitch Mallia, who has made several A-League appearances for the senior Sydney team, gave his side the perfect start on 10 minutes.

He accepted a lovely pass from Tom Slater to tuck home the ball on the second attempt after his first effort was partially saved by goalkeeper Aaron Liddell.

The Wanderers should have drawn level in the 26th minute when Jaushua Sotirio teed up striker Mark Cindric with a layoff from the by-line.

But Cindric was not quick enough on the trigger and his meekly struck shot was deflected for a corner.

Sydney responded to that scare with their second goal, via the penalty spot, minutes later.

Mallia pursued a long through-ball to go one-on-one with Liddell inside the box.

The two arrived simultaneously and Mallia was quickest to react with a header after the ball spewed in the air.

The referee ruled Liddell fouled the striker as he attempted to nod the ball into an empty net, leaving Jared Lum to fire home the penalty for a 2-0 advantage.

The visitors almost pinched a goal back right on the stroke of half-time only for Sydney keeper Anthony Bouzanis to deny Jake McGing from close range.

Three minutes after the resumption Zac Elrich displayed tremendous speed and determination to outstrip the Sydney defence and find the back of the net with a firmly hit shot into the bottom right corner.

The Wanderers pushed forward in search of an equaliser but were undone by a defensive blunder 10 minutes from time.

Mallia seized on a poor back pass, winning the initial challenge with the keeper before sweeping the ball into a vacant net.

Terry Antonis completed the scoring, finishing off some terrific work from Alex Urosevski to bury Sydney’s fourth at the death.

ROUND 13 VS MELBOURNE HEART FC AT EPPING SOCCER STADIUM

Western Sydney Wanderers picked up their first away win of the season last Saturday as they defeated the Melbourne Heart 2-1 at Epping Stadium.

After an even opening, the Wanderers struck first blood on 10 minutes when Perkatis sent Heart ‘keeper Alastair Bray the wrong way from the spot after Nicholas Olsen was fouled by Andrew Mullett.

It wasn’t long before the Heart equalised through Macallister in the 18th minute, also from the penalty spot, after Stefan Mauk was pushed over contesting a high ball in the area.

The Heart nearly took the lead on 28 minutes when Mauk completed a driving run into the area but his powerful shot clipped the crossbar from a great position.

Jacob Williams floated a brilliant

long ball over the top of the Heart back four which was excellently controlled and slipped past the ‘keeper by Barac.

The second-half possession was shaded by the Wanderers as they looked to push on for a third goal.

It nearly came on 54 minutes when Visconte crossed a super ball to the back post that was controlled and flicked by Perkatis and promptly blasted over the bar by Alastair Quinn with his first touch.

Another golden opportunity was squandered by Western Sydney on 81 minutes after Olsen brought down a cross-field pass and advanced on goal.

The left-winger chose to pass to Trifiro, whose placed effort went just wide of the right post.

PRE-SCHOOL AND WEEkLY CLINICS

IT’S THE PERFECT TIME FOR A YOUNG FOOTBALLER PLAYING IN SYDNEY’S WESTERN SUBURBS.

The inclusion of a club in the Hyundai A-League from this region has inspired yet another generation of future Socceroos.

NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers are proud of the team they put on the pitch every week in the domestic competition and of the work they do within the community ,particularly at a grassroots level.

A best examples of this in action are the Club’s Holiday Clinics that have been held over the month of January.

These programs are developed in a way to provide students with a chance to develop their football skills and have fun during the summer holidays.

“Each child comes away from the clinic with a greater understanding of how the Wanderers play,” said Community, Pathway and Football Development Coordinator Josh Hunter.

“The messages they take from the clinics are designed to promote playing football in a positive and attacking manner, and provide each

of the kids with the opportunity to further develop their skills.”

The messages aren’t just about football. They are also about what it means to be

a Wanderer and being part of that culture. A player who wants to be part of the

club has to be humble, listen to those who coach them, work hard and be disciplined.

“The key message that comes across is each clinic is learning to play the ‘Wanderers Way’,” said Hunter.

That message is spurred by the array of footballers at the club who assist in bringing star quality to the kids.

It’s a buzz for young players like Kwabena Appiah-Kubi who delight in connecting with the Club’s smaller fans.

“It’s kind of what you look forward to as well as being a footballer and I was even pleased they knew who I was,” Appiah-Kubi said.

“We made sure we were having

fun – I even had kids ask me about FIFA and why I am so fast!”

The clinics hope to provide students with a fun and supportive learning environment, and leave them with inspiration to one day become a Wanderer.

“They got to be with their favourite team and most of the kids want to one day play for the Club so it was good to be a part of a clinic that they know maybe they’ll later play for the squad,” said Appiah-Kubi.

For National Youth League player Daniel Barac who played his junior football in the nation’s capital, the holiday clinics have assured the striker there is plenty to be excited about in Western Sydney.

“It was good to see the young kids coming out and learning new skills,” said Barac.

“It’s about having fun while

you’re young and getting a passion for the game, and I think all the kids are out there doing that.

“I was always outside kicking the ball – that’s all I wanted to do when I was younger and keep playing football.”

The kids are run through a variety of skills sessions linking to the national curriculum.

Each station is coached by top quality and fully qualified coaches.

It’s a place where football knowledge is shared amongst those teaching and the players.

“It was so positive – they seem to love what they’re doing,” Barac says.

“They’ll take what they’ve learnt here, and hopefully get bigger and better.”

A chorus of catch-cries have been heard around the clinics and it’s all about the kids who can’t wait for the next school holidays to come around.
