Pressure Transient Analysis (PTA) is the most important tool available to the engineer trying to characterize and manage the productivity of his re s e r vo i r. T h e P TA te s t h a s traditionally relied on data from down-hole pressure gauges which are expensive to run, risk tool loss in the well bore, and expose personnel to injury. Because of these factors, critical reservoir management decisions are often made without adequate PTA testing.

Using surface pressures for PTA dramatically reduces costs, eliminates risk and allows frequent testing. However, pressure transient testing presents several technical challenges in conversion of surface pressures to r e s e r v o i r c o n d i t i o n s . T h i s p re s e n t a t i o n d i s c u s s e s t h e s e challenges and presents examples of Pressure Transient Analysis from simultaneously acquired surface and down-hole pressures. The key idea to take away from this lecture is that it is possible to perform non-intervention Pressure Transient Tests on most naturally unloading gas wells using surface pressures.

Nathan Waldman graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He received his Masters and Doctorate degrees in Polymer Physics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Dr. Waldman joined Dow Chemical Company in 1967 and worked in Research and International Business Development. Waldman left Dow in 1979 for the Presidency of Cathodic Protection Services (CPS) in Houston, Texas. While at CPS, Dr. Waldman became familiar with data acquisition procedures for Pressure Transient Analysis in oil and gas reservoirs. He recognized that this critically important technique failed to take a d v a n t a g e o f n e w co m p u te r technologies that could improve the quality and efficiency of the service. Based on that recognition, he founded Reservoir Dynamics to introduce the latest electronic technologies to Pressure Transient Testing. Dr. Waldman then developed a process for non-intervention reservoir testing and founded Data Retrieval Corporation to market that process which is the basis of this Distinguished Lecturer presentation.

SPE Delta Section - 4 - February, 2011

From the Chair….I hope everyone is enjoying a great 2011. Though it is a new year, many of the same “routines” are beginning to surface:

The Golf Tournament committee is busy planning this year's tournament which will be held Friday, thMarch 25 at Carter Plantation located in Springfield, Louisiana. Once again proceeds will go to

universities throughout our area: LSU, Nicholls State, UNO, ULL, MS State, and Louisiana Tech.

Thanks to all golf committee members:Jerry Simms Doug Maceachern Matt Wandstrat Lauren PolkBob Freeman Alden Sonnier Gary Snyder Jan Catalano

The Young Professionals held their initial planning meeting for the Second Annual Masquerade Gala to benefit Core Element. Last year the YP's donated $20,000 to this effort of training teachers and supplying educational kits to aide in teaching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) subjects to students. This year proves to be another fun event to be held in conjunction with the Deep Water Symposium.

Steve Moore, Chairman of Continuing Education, is gearing up to offer three Continuing Education sessions between now and May. The first will be an Ethics Class which will be 10:00-11:30 on Tuesday, February 15, 2011. As always, we appreciate John Rogers Smith, P.E., Ph.D., Associate Professor, Craft and Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering Louisiana State University working with us to provide these classes.

Likewise, our Focus Group meetings are starting up again. Alan Holley continues to line up interesting speakers for our monthly Focus Group meetings. Keep abreast of monthly topics as they are noted on the cover of the newsletter.

Also, it is time to announce the beginning of the 2011-2012 Delta section board elections. Are you interested? More information about the election process can be found in the newsletter and webpage. Interested members should email their intent to run for a position to our past chair, Matt Wandstrat.

Do make plans to bring your families to our sponsored events. SPE-Delta continues to work with teachers throughout the area not only to support their activities but to encourage energy education. Our participation with the Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair (GNOSEF) is a great example. The mission of GNOSEF is to encourage independent student research in science and engineering, to encourage youth to pursue science, math, or engineering careers, and to promote collaboration and interaction between area students and scientists and engineers. This year the fair celebrates its 55th year and since the industry societies have been involved the fair has incorporated a division for Energy & Transportation to encourage research in these areas. Participating in the fair is a wonderful opportunity for the students in Region 9 which encompasses Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, and Plaquemines parishes. It promotes development of skills they will need in their future education or career.

Below are other events to post on your calendar. Each of these is family oriented and encourages interest in engineering. The events at the Louisiana Children's Museum provide oil industry education to all ages. So, please, bring and your families and better yet – VOLUNTEER! All of the events are fun, educational, and exciting.

February 22-24 - Greater New Orleans Science & Engineering FairMarch 17-19 - Bayou Regional’s Robotics Tournament, Alario Center

th th thThe 2011 FIRST Robotics Bayou Regional is coming to New Orleans on March 17 , 18 , and 19 (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday), and we would love to have your help as a volunteer! FIRST Robotics was designed to provide high-school students with hands-on learning opportunities in Engineering and Science. The competition challenges teams and their mentors to solve a common

problem in a six-week time frame using a standard "kit of parts" and a common set of rules. Teams build robots from the parts and enter them in a series of competitions at a high energy, varsity-style sporting event. We currently have 39 teams registered for the 2011 Bayou Regional. General information about a FIRST Robotics Competition can be found at www.usfirst.org/what/default.aspx. The 2011 Bayou Regional will be in the Alario Center in Westwego, ten minutes from downtown New Orleans; parking is free and food (plus a T-shirt, of course) is provided. If you are familiar with FIRST, are ready to volunteer and know what you would like to do, go straight to VIMS at www.usfirst.org/vims. If you already have signed up, THANK YOU! For more information, keep reading

FIRST BAYOU REGIONAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Detailed information can be found for each position on the FIRST web site under Volunteer Position Descriptions:

. Note that while it is ideal (for training purposes) for someone to volunteer the entire time, part-time volunteers are most welcome! The first step in volunteering is to sign up on the Volunteer Informat ion & Matching System ( VIMS)

. Make sure, when asked, to select “FIRST Robotics Competition – Events” as a program and the 2011 Bayou Regional as the specific event. You then need to select when you would like to volunteer and for what position. If you do not have a specific preference, you can select more than one position, and I will place you where needed. If you can volunteer the entire time, please let me know as soon as possible, since we are trying to fill critical "full-time" positions. Also, if you have a group that would like to volunteer, let me know and I will try to place everyone working together, if possible. Finally, it is important to sign up on VIMS in advance to allow time for the screening process prior to the tournament. Volunteers who have not been screened must be placed with someone who has.......so if you know you would like to volunteer, sign up soon!

Thank you for your help!

Who We Are…The SPE-Delta Young Professional Program began in 2004 when SPE recognized the impact of the "Big Crew Change" in the industry, where companies were increasing recruitment of young engineers as the Baby Boomer generation nears retirement. The first YPP meeting was held on August 18th, 2004. Since then, the number of young professionals joining SPE-Delta has increased steadily, accounting for 25% of the SPE-Delta membership today.

The mission of the Delta section YP program is to identify, engage, and develop SPE members 35 years old and younger, as well as other industry newcomers, by providing relevant technical education and networking opportunities. There are 12 YP committee members who organize educational, social and philanthropic opportunities for the section. The goals for 2010-2011 are to increase YP membership by 10%, engage the local universities, provide social and technical events each month, and

ndraise 10% more in donations at the 2 Annual Masquerade Gala in August.

Below is the statistic of how we have grown over the years in SPE delta. Please invite your friends and co-workers to join us and make us a force to impact our community!

LSU CornerAll of the students are heading back to campus after a long and well deserved semester break. There has been a lull in activities as the students have scattered over the last month or so. As the new semester begins, they are all getting one step closer to graduation and out into the workforce. Prospects for employment for these talented young people are good despite the issues we have been experiencing here in the Gulf Coast. The group was able to take a field trip prior to finals in order to get a better feel for life in our industry. A group of LSU students came to Schlumberger's Cement Lab in order to experience real life experiments and challenges. The adventurous students learned about the complexities of designing a proper cement job, especially in light of the tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico. All participants came away with a great experience and an even bigger sense of pride in their chosen field.

Again, as a reminder, Dr. Sears is stepping down in July as the char of PETE and the search is on. If you are interested or know someone who is qualified please check out the department website for more details at http://www.pete.lsu.edu/. The following is a brief description of the position.

The Craft & Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering at Louisiana State University seeks a Chairperson to lead the department. Required Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Petroleum Engineering or a related field; eligible for a faculty appointment in petroleum engineering; achieved excellence in academia or in industry; possess strong leadership skills; experience in academia and administration. An individual that meets college-wide criteria will also be appointed to the Longwell-Leonard Family Distinguished Professorship. Please pass this along to everyone you think could be an asset to LSU.

Bye for now from the LSU corner and I will see you next month. Geaux Tigers!
