Life is always a surprise!! Floods in the desert.

I think there were few new lakes in Sun Lakes (LOL)

We’re gearing up for a new year. As we gather for our

first General Meeting on Oct.20, let’s remember that

we will be welcoming some new members and

those who are considering membership and we all

should make a conscious effort to meet and make

them feel welcome.

The upcoming “FALL FORUM” will focus on issues of diversity and

the influence of money in elections. This is a great

opportunity for all to meet and share thoughts and

plans with those who are wrestling with the same goals and how to meet them. And since we are playing

hostess (providing food) help is needed. Registration forms

are available on the this web site.

Speaking of the web site -- everyone should take a few minutes

(well maybe more than a few minutes) Margaret Noser has compiled

a fount of information, both current and past. All of us need to consult it

monthly.

Thank you Margaret

See everyone on Oct 20 in the Oakwood dining room.

An e-mail message will be sent out a week in ad-vance of each meeting and I will ask for a reply, Yes or No, as soon as possible. October 20 GENERAL MEETING

Keely Embleton will speak at our first branch meet-ing. Keely has a love for learning new languages and cultures. Four years ago, having been married barely one year and having just given birth to her first child, she moved to Cairo, Egypt with her husband, where she lived for a little over one year, making friends with the Egyptian women in her neighborhood. She writes, "After living overseas in a majority Muslim country, I was able to glean a sense of the positive and negative effects on the women living in a society that is predominantly Islamic. . . .This is just a glimpse of what I saw while living overseas during part of the Arab spring. My hope is that our eyes would be more open to other women around the world. How can we come alongside each other to encourage and love one an-other without the barriers of culture and religion getting in the way?" Keely plans to re-turn to Egypt soon.

The book choice for our first meeting this fall is The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. The discussion will be led by Madeleine Lutz. Kidd again writes on the thorny topic of race relations in South Carolina in the early 1800’s. Alternating first person narratives of Sarah Grimke, the daughter of a planta-tion owner, and Hetty-a.k.a. Handful- reveal both characters’ search for freedom and self expression.

Toni Corrigan , assisted by Marcia Wagoner, will host the meeting at her home. R.S. V.P. to Toni by email [email protected] or call her at 480 600 6591.

New members are always welcome.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE

New scholarship chairs Carollynn Hanson and Tillie Fortner are excited to begin a new year of fund-raising with the goal of providing even more deserving young women funds for college this coming spring. We plan to continue the very successful birthday raffle. Please plan to bring a wrapped/bagged gift to our meeting the month of your birth-day. We invite those of you with birthdays during our summer hiatus to celebrate yet another month of the year by joining in on the fun. We can't promise that our raffle will be as entertaining without Kris calling the lucky numbers, but we'll do our best. In addition, plans are beginning to come together for an event in late winter/ early spring; a fashion show featuring clothing from Macy's! Won't that be fun? Some of you may want to start brushing up on your modeling skills....we'll put those to good use. Stay tuned for more information.
